It's ok If you are going to make more video essays on indian movies here is small suggestion while introducing any movie from india just state it like Indian movie shot in X language or X indian movie (X- original language of movie) It will save your time from learning name of each regional film industry Remember indian movies at least famous one are now get dubbed in other indian languages so it will be hard for you to find movie in its original language. 15:15 it's okay you watched on Netflix so I understand the confusion but this is not Hindi Cinema, this is Telugu Tollywood cinema. Bollywood Hindi cinema has not produced something of RRR's level. Only Telugu industry and Great Telugu director RAJAMOULI can create this!

@schnee He is not villain, he is one of the well known bravest Freedom Fighter's of India(Andhra Pradesh State). This movie is a 'What IF' story of if two well know freedom fighter Ram and Bheem meet before they started fight. Kindly correct this. Search for Alluri Seetha Rama Raju in google

@@Yashans142 The only Hollywood movies that are equal in ridiculousness is the Fast and Furious franchise. Sure, many action movies have unnaturally durable or strong humans, but FandF are the only Hollywood movies where regular people are as durable as superheroes.

All I can say.. Keeravani deserves every award he receive for RRR. Some of the background scores are freaking amazing and sets the mood for us viewers.

sadly he didn't got the award for the OST but Natu natu !! 7 years , still I regularly listen to all 10 bahubali albums.

This movie was a hell of a trip. And I had to pause after his intro sequence. It was absolutely ludicrous and without being able to describe the details of why, it just hits. The writing on the movie is exceptionally good. The visual storytelling is top notch. The effects are crazy good. It's a very different style of cinema, but man was it a well made movie.

One piece of context regarding his weapon choice: the lāṭhī (baton) is iconic of the Indian policeman, and going back further, the daṇḍa (staff) in Indian mythology is a symbol of justice, order, punishment. He picked, and stubbornly held onto the whole time, a weapon not of mindless violence, but ideologically charged action, which can go either way, if you've seen the film.

I think why people like -'Bollywood'- Tollywood films so much is because the action/over the top aspects of the film are what the raw emotions call for. The odds more stacked, the reinforcements at dawn more hopeful, the feats more grand. It's like your grandpa telling you a story when you're a kid, but it's a whole movie.

As someone who loves musicals and really dislikes/is indifferent to most action movies, I had never seen and Indian film prior to RRR and now that I’m watching more of them, I really can’t get enough and I think it’s because Indian directors/filmmakers use the same logic that is applied to musicals. In musicals, if an emotion is too big for speaking, you sing. If the emotion is too big for song, you dance. In India, it feels like they added another layer which is, “If the situation and emotion is too big for either, you fight,” and they will inject the action scenes with whatever emotion the situation calls for. It’s not just, “Put a car chase here, put a fight scene there,” the fight scenes serve a purpose, if done well, just like how a musical number serves a purpose in a musical, if done well.

"Depth with fake stopping points" is such a good way of referring to it. I also _love_ it when you think you understand a character only for them to pull the rug out from under you and making you realize they're so much more complex than you thought. That's pretty much every character in Arcane, and I do it in my own writing whenever possible. It's good to finally have a name for that concept

RRR is a modern masterpiece. Hopefully, more will be able to experience this ADVENTURE. This is really what "cinema" is all about. Ram is easily one of my favorite characters of all time, up there with Indiana Jones and Aragorn. The Hitchcock practice of "show, don't tell" is played out beautifully in RRR, especially with the introduction of Bheem (he'll go to any lengths to save his sister - even facing a lion!)

Actually that little girl was not sister of Bheem, but she was the daughter of his tribe and he was the savior/soldier of tribe whose life's purpose is to serve for the safety of tribe in all way possible. He is brother-kind figure for the girl because she belongs to his tribe and she calls him brother.

This movie was awesome! Seen it twice, and I smile through all reaction videos i’ve watched. This is a full movie. It has action, great score, heroic themes, love stories, clean and funny comedy. All done without a single curs word. Brilliant.

This movie is fucking amazing. And complicated, clearly, and I'm trying to learn all I can about that. But like, the meeting of the two leads left me screaming at my television in increasing pitches until the dog barked at me.

I found out about this movie from a video the critical drinker did on it. I wasn’t THAT interested in seeing it but my buddy always likes to check out movies the drinker reviews. So we start the movie and first pleasant surprise was that ray stevenson is in this movie but then we get to this scene and god damn I was absolutely hooked from there. Easily one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time.

RRR is one of my favourite movies of all time, it's genuinely amazing. As shown here everything about it is soooo good.

Honestly this has instantly become one of my favorite action movies ever and has made me want to watch a lot more Indian films, and the over the top aspect just makes me love it even more, how unapologetically badass everyone here is

Ok..I am gonna suggest you some of our movies. But you also need to understand that there are too many good movies and it is hard to suggest as it really depends on your taste as well. Many Indian movies are filled with cultural references that only Indians will understand because they are only targeted to Indians, so you might feel a disconnect. But anyways, now that I have said all that, I will recommend a few with a much more universal appeal. I will also add a little non-spoiler description for your convenience: 1 - Andhadhun (A story about a blind pianist and how one unfortunate event threw him into a world of darkness(pun intended). This is a very gripping thriller which I think you will enjoy. Some crazy shit happens in the movie. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) 2 - Tummbad (If you like Guillermo del Toro movies, you will love this. A horror - folklore with one of the best cinematography and camera work that I have seen. The story and the message behind it is amazing. Truly a Masterpiece. Not your typical horror.) 3 - 3 Idiots ( A go-to bollywood film for any non- Indian. It's a comedy drama film with some beautiful and hardhitting message. The movie is fun. You will laugh, cry, dance and learn. You will be surprised with the dark subject matters that this one deals with, being the kind of comedy that it is. ) 4 - Super Deluxe ( 4 interwoven stories shown in parallel, all of them equally interesting and beautiful. The movie is subtle and much more is happening in every scene that you see. This movie is what you call "Every frame a painting".) 5 - Kumbalangi Nights ( This is where you have entered one of the best film industry in India. Malayalam film industry. Here you have truly a gold mine of movies. The thing that makes these movies special is that they always put story and characters as their top priority. Ypu can start off with Kumbalangi nights, this film centres on the strained relationship between four brothers living together in a dysfunctional home, and how they ultimately stand up for each other as a family. One of the many Masterpieces of this industry) 6 - The Lunchbox (2 acting legends from India in this movie and a simple love story between 2 people who have never seen each other, a love triggered by a misplaced lunchbox.) 7 - Gangs of wasseypur 1 and 2 (These two are essentially 1 movie. A very very entertaining gangster movie. This movie will welcome you to the world of director Anurag Kashyap. Remember the name because you are going to be a fan) 8 - Haider (If you like Shakespeare tragedies, this is a twisted adaptation of Hamlet set in the conflicted land of the state of Kashmir. This movie will be highly appreciated if you know the intricacies of Hamlet. But even if u don't know, you will have fun) 9 - Uri - The surgical strike (A military movie based on a true event, a covert operation against a group of militants who attacked a base in Uri, Kashmir, in 2016 and killed many soldiers. Really good movie.) 10 - Kahaani (A pregnant woman, travels to Kolkata from London to search for her missing husband. When all clues lead to a dead end, she realises that there is more than what meets the eye. A good thriller movie.) 11 - RRR (Watch it again, because why tf not)

@@diwakarp3299 "Boring" is your personal opinion, if you only like over-the-top movies, good for you. But these are actually very loved movies in India and outside. Also it's not just about being over the top. RRR is not famous JUST because of over the top action, we have been doing over-the-top action movies from quite some time, why do you think only RRR got the attention? It was also the heart of the movie and a universal appeal to it that sold it to everyone. I have many friends from America who have seen Bahubali and did not like(understand) it, mainly because that movie is targeted to Indian audience and many of the references goes over their head and you really can't blame them for not understanding or liking it. The movies I suggested were with a more universal appeal story wise. It will be easier for them to connect and I tried to put all types of genres (comedy, thriller, mystery, horror, Action-military, Gangster, romcom, drama) so a good range of Indian cinema is covered. And also the stereotype of "Indian cinema is only over-the-top action" is broken.😊 And it's their choice, that's why I added the description so they can choose as per their taste. Also I have shown these movies to my American friends and these are highly loved by them soo.. PS - I am not saying Bahubali is bad, it's just more for Indian audience.

The BG Score is on another level in this scene and the whole film. When RAM looks at the red shirt guy from atop watch tower we hear a screeching Eagle sound as the bg score... if u look around there is no eagle flying around in that area. That sound symbolizes that RAM is like an eagle and red shirt guy is the fish in the water(the mob here). We even get a hyper zoom to red shirt guy from RAM's eyes as we hear the eagle sound. just like an Eagle RAM's eyes throughout the scene are laser focused onto red shirt guy, just like an eagle he jumps off into pool of crowd(lake for an eagle) to catch his prey and get him out of the pool. and all this happens without a single fucking dialogue and the action is clearly shown without fake jump cuts to trick audience. That introduction scene has to go into filmmaking textbooks...

I finally saw this movie and I can safely say S.S. Rajamouli is my new fave director of all time. He is all show, don't tell and that is amazing. Even in his even more ambition film duo Bahubali, where the second film is essentially telling at story, he emphasizes showing. And it can get over the top and a bit cheesy but it doesn't matter because he knows how to make an audience care.

RRR was robbed of an Oscar. It is by far the BEST PICTURE of 2022.

Next film will be India's biggest film, first Pan world film, English release is also possible that time ... Mahabharat each part will focus on specific generations and there stories I think, and last part will be full blown war, He is planning to make every part With budget of 1000 cr now, Because his next film will have budget around 800 crs

This movie is a triumph. It is incredible. There is not a moment of waste. Everything is important. This is one of very few films I would call perfect.

I think what I liked about this film more was how genuine it was. You can feel the love and care every member of their team put into it, how nobody considered "is this too much "x"? " . It stayed true to itself through every second of the film. Loved it. Will watch it a thousand more times.

The direction SS Rajamouli, the writer k vijayendra prasad and the actor Ramcharan did an incredible job in portraying the character of Ramaraju in RRR.

RRR is such a good movie, I'm so glad you are breaking down why this scene is a masterclass in Show Don't Tell.

Introduced as a villian but he is not silent Hero. But the main hero of the film. That's the beauty of this film.

One thing that Indian cinema in my experience is that they make EVERY CHARACTER RIGHT. It's like they developed all the skills into character writing and not look back. The movie 'Raees' follows a ruthless Alcohol smuggling Kingpin as a protagonist and makes me ROOT for him.

i loooove that you're gushing about his incredible performance through scenes of lack of dialogue. there are SO many fantastic scenes where he doesn't say anything!! but everything we need is on goddamn beautiful face! love this breakdown. i'll be sending it to everyone i know who laughs at this scene

This breakdown of Ram is what exactly the director envisioned😃. And this is an INDIAN TELUGU movie.

The first few minutes of this movie blew me away.and keeps the action going all the way through till the end.its very rare that a movie now days captives me.the perfect movie!

Absolutely brilliant character introduction. That's why we cared so much about these characters. This film is perfection, with the absolutely fantastic action and stunt balanced by the depth of the characters and human story.

You described perfectly how I felt about Ram the moment he was introduced. A British loyalist, hurting his own countrymen, yet a complete badass! The movie sets his arc extremely well. The BGM right before his entry is completely silent. Then it elevates to revealing him. His eyes reflect the fire radiating from the torch one of the rebels is holding. He is frightening throughout this scene. But eventually, he ends up becoming a reverential figure. An absolutely incredible arc.

@@redbloodbluemoon1423 As the guy said in the video, the total contrast between his emotions is fearsome. It's like Kratos from God of war, cold and calculated when situation arises...but when left to his own....looks like a beast trying to break out of the cage.

i would recommend eega...it's basically a revenge story and love story in which a fly is the hero...u have to experience the movie for urselves to know how they make you root for a fly (directed by the same guy as RRR)

Then i want to recommend 'magadeera' that is the beginning of his big budget movies where tollywood itself started believing in him i still remember my mom used to ask me for magadeera mv so downloaded it in a mobile....it felt like a magical story book with some beautiful song numbers and comedy and finally the action is 🔥🔥🔥

I did not know whether the director actually did this much analysis while taking this sequence. Great analysis.

I watched this movie with some friends and we had such a good time. This character intro was fantastic 👌

Seems like it was just Hollywood who forgot how to write characters

Now that I've seen two cinema/writing breakdown channels talk about RRR, both of whom I respect highly, I've got to give RRR a watch. this is the first indian movie i have ever seen and i absolutely loved it, s utterly ridiculous but its so much fun and the characters and relationships are so well done you don't even care that its crazy

This is an excellent breakdown! The level of craft in RRR is SO strong and I do wish that more (western) reviewers would recognize that in addition to surface observations about the spectacle. In fairness it’s really overwhelming if you’ve never seen an Indian film before and easy to miss how fine-tuned and intentional every element is. I had the chance to watch a bunch of Rajamouli’s movies just over the past month through film festival screenings and it’s pretty amazing how he’s been able to keep leveling up while maintaining a signature style as he’s gotten access to increasingly larger budgets. I haven’t come across your channel before but this video really impressed me so I went back and watched your LOTR videos! They’re all really excellent and I especially loved the way you addressed a commenter’s skepticism about how to find depth in a story with seemingly simplistic morality. The ‘death star laser beam’ approach struck me as also being the perfect analogy to explain Rajamouli’s approach to filmmaking - point everything in one direction and dial it all the way up! When I try to convince people to watch RRR I’ve been describing it as “an emotional sledgehammer” and I’ve been thinking a lot about why it’s so wildly emotionally effective. (I’ve never made a video essay before but I am THIS close just because I cannot stop talking about this movie…) If you watch interviews with Rajamouli he brings up again and again that he approaches his stories through emotion, and everything else, the visuals, the action, hang off of that essential element. In one of the Q&A screenings I attended he gave an answer I thought was so apt - someone asked, ‘your movies have so many over-the-top/extraordinary feats; how do you know how far you can push reality without going too far?’ And he said, essentially: the level of action has to be justified by the strength of the emotion. Even in real life, you hear stories about people who are able to perform extraordinary feats of strength in moments of extremity, and what we see in his movies is basically an extension of that principal, ramped up to fantastical levels through the power of movie magic. Speaking as a Western audience member, the conversations get sooo hung up over story logic in movies, to the point that we disregard or even no longer recognize emotional logic, but it seems to me that the prioritization of the emotional experience is the key ingredient that has made Rajamouli so successful as a Blockbuster storyteller.

I have long preferred show don't tell style of storytelling. It just feels so much more satisfying than being spoon-fed every detail. So this film was an absolute treat. Even being unused to Indian films it was immediately apparent withing the first few minutes that this was an extremely well made film in every way. From the cinematography to the locations, the vfx, post work and color grading, just everything was so crisp, clean, tight and yet felt extremely natural.

I think the Character traits of RAM is similar to the Character traits of Karna from Indian epic Mahabharata. Karna also have qualities of a hero loyal to his friend, a philanthropist, powerful, determined and righteous warrior. But his friend is a villian and he is fighting for him. Thus making him an anti hero than a true hero. But in RRR Ram started as an anti hero and become a hero because he fought for what is right at the end

This is a gold mine of information for writing villains

Isn't it fun to just go to the cinema once in a while and just lose your mind with the crowd, laughing, cheering and just having a good time? Wish more films were made for such experience.

This deserves a lot more views. Really enjoyed the breakdown and would love to see more.

Such an interesting analysis. Even amazing how you were able to clearly define how they showed us all his dimensions with just his intro. It's crazy how we learn the traits of this character right at the beginning without any backstory or hardcore theoretical information.

I'm really glad to see an analysis of this movie by you! I'd never watched an Indian movie before because I knew they were over the top (including the musical bits which put me off), so when I watched this I was blown away by the excellent writing and cinematography, by the complex characters and even by the fantasy elements. Because in this context, the over the top parts are meant to feel mythical, like we're watching the epic tale of two legendary heroes. Even some of the singing (the last part) added to the immersion instead of removing it. Excellent analysis of that first scene!

@@Summerblur ​Firstly, my deductions were based on fragments of Indian movies I'd seen, not on what Western media says about Indian cinema, and they really were over the top. I'm aware other types of movies are made in India, just that when I heard RRR would be action-fantasy and musical, I naturally assumed it would be like those such other movies of which I'd seen fragments. Secondly, my original comment acknowledged my ignorance and preconceptions, hence why I said I was mind-blown by the movie and it opened my eyes to Indian cinema and culture. I've watched other Indian movies since. I'm sure you aren't educated in the cinema of every country in the world either, but sometimes it takes one movie to make us curious to discover more. Thirdly, thanks for the movie recommendations, I'll check them out :)

Update: I saw the movie & it might actually be one of my favourite movies of all time.

As an Indian, I didn’t expect this movie to appear in a video like this but I’m really glad you’re doing an analysis on this RRR scene

YESSSS. Do more RRR! This film is an EXPERIENCE 😂

I wouldn’t have watched this movie if you didn’t put out this video. It’s in my top 5 for this year. Thank you!

I will say that the trumpet motif doesn't end on the same note, it starts on a C and ends on a G, but a few things can still be taken away from the motif that side with your point. The underlying strings, to the best of my ears, do hold out the same note, but even if I'm wrong they absolutely keep the same rhythm while BUILDING in intensity, implying a resolute focus that is only becoming stronger. The trumpet's last note is also held and does something similar and I believe ends on a dominant note. Why it's dominant takes too long to explain, but just know that music theory jargon leads it to being a note that wants to change to another note, C in this case, and resolve the tune nicely and neatly. The trumpet doesn't do this, instead stubbornly holding the G and making the motif more intense and powerful. The last part I'm only about 80% sure about because I'm a little unsure of the song's key, but still music is cool and I like what it's telling the audience about this character. Edit: spelling

All that amazing writing, direction, camera work, costume, setting and detail. And the flag of the surrounded outpost is upside-down. It's enough to make me think it was done on purpose as a well deserved subtle dig.

Thanks for bringing more attention to this movie! One of my favorites and definitely worth a chance if you haven’t seen it.

English Vinglish holds a special place in my heart (and also K3G). The first one is not quite as over-the-top as some Bollywood films can be, so it's a good way to get introduced to the story format without the suspension of disbelief. Plus, SRIDEVI. I think what gets me about these movies is the pain and sense of duty that the mothers feel when they basically have no say in the circumstances they find themselves in. Seeing them take back their agency with such grace and finally receiving the respect they always deserved never fails to make me emotional.

15:15 you watched on Netflix so I understand the confusion but this is not Hindi Cinema, this is Telugu Tollywood cinema. Bollywood Hindi cinema has not produced something of RRR's level. Only Telugu industry and Great Telugu director RAJAMOULI can create this!

This song was my favorite immediately. This movie is the greatest bromance ever and didn't have to go so hard! But I loved every millisecond of it!

Gotta be one of the best written characters I’ve ever seen

The director in an interview said he likes to make his character almost without limitations. So what we get here is how far ram is willing to go in the most brutal way possible. Also this scene reminds me of daemon targaryen at stepstones

If recommend Baahubali.. It's a two part fantasy epic.. And I mean EPIC! Much like RRR, it's ridiculously over the top, basically a superhero story in a fantasy setting, and it's an absolute blast. The first part is a bit weaker than the second, but everything pays is so amazingly.

Bahubali 1 is only am introduction of the characters and the unfolding their background story, the 2nd one is the actual story and yes, the characters in Bahubali and parts of the story are inspired by Indian epics Ramayan and Mahabharat. The level of creativity in Bahubali, the Directors vision amd execution was unimaginable. In my opinion Bahubali is much above RRR.

Making villains turn out to actually be a hero is harder than making villains a hero through redemption etc. because the author can always change the character but they need real skills to change the viewers, and RRR has succeeded on this!

YOOO I binge your videos all the time but I did not expect to see this movie here so I’m super excited to watch this (I’m Indian and I watched this movie in theaters when it first came out so I KNOW this is going to be a good one) Edit after watching the video: YES I really love how addressed the elements in this one too! That over the top execution of everything is actually pretty common in a lot of the Indian movies that I’ve watched but in my opinion, that’s part of what gives it the charm it has- You definitely picked a really good movie to start with in this area of movies though! But also yeah watching someone throw a motorcycle is also pretty funny 💀

I watched RRR before it got memed to max hype since I watch many foreign films, so I get it if you went in expecting something other than an excellently paced action movie about brotherhood, you might be left disappointed.

I loved how you analyzed the suspension of belief, how the director uses details which individually seem realistic to build up to a sum total of a totally unrealistic and bombastic highlight. I think it's the core reason why people who aren't familiar with Indian cinema were mesmerized by RRR, even without context there's a way the movie really hooks you in. You should definitely check out Rajamouli's other films, namely Eega and Baahubali 1 & 2.

This movie was so much fun, it's what really cemented that I only like action movies if fight scenes are off-the-walls crazy and creative yet still somewhat grounded to allow suspension of disbelief.

Honestly, this is perfect Batman scene in non Batman movie.... Absolutely scary Introduction, A man with no fear..... The Musical Score which elevates it to another level, The way he has set a target on one Guy like eagle, a lot of things which are subtly made viewers believe that he can take on 2000 people on his own..... SS Rajamouli has really improved from his previous Films, With every film his tendency to be better than previous makes him really great Director, His next movie is Globetrotting Action adventure, eagerly waiting for that one....

The way you explained that character was awesome

I always believe analysing and reviewing is one skill, but the way the director presents the movie to us to do such analysis is exceptional talent ( he thinks in Raw, emotional, showing the same in pictorial..... hat's off to such directors)

"Depth with fake stopping points" is the perfect description for Toguro from Yu Yu Hakusho, sounds like they might be similar characters too

This intro scene was as powerful as Thanos intro in Infinity War
