This Video is Controversial. Click At Your Own Risk

This video is controversial. You have been warned. Click at your own risk.
2024 has begun. This is the 10th year of this platform's existance, and 900 videos released, a introspective examination and self assessment of content typology and reception outcome of my own work, is I believe paramount. Most importantly, what is the message that I am sharing with the world?
For this year's content, the usual baseline of historical videos, like these, is still going to be the core of my production. I will also continue ongoing series such as these. But what about these types of videos? Am I going to drop the controversial stuff once and for all? The offensive content? The content that gets me waves of hate in that ungodly wasteland called Reddit?
This question is a great opportunity for an empirical discussion on modern logic in argumentation discourse, to understand why controversy arises, and how to still encourage an open exchange of opposing thoughts.
What is Controversy?
You see to answer this with a yes or a no, is inappropriate, because it would be a way to dignify a question that is based on a false assumption. The assumption being that these videos are in fact controversial in the first place. I argue they shouldn't be.
I'll ask a question of my own, instead.
Why are these videos deemed controversial? In fact, what is controversy?
Not only as a general principle of psychology of the masses, but also specifically within the educational and entertainment cyber sphere, in connection with information and comunication technlogies.
Due to the spread of Social Media, and with the safety of internet anonymity, a certain frowning upon topics considered controversial has been bolstered. We got so used to the idea that certain specific key words make content "controversial", that we have been effectively gaslit into accepting it as a base of discourse, even though we should be questioning the foundations of such mental positioning.
What is the cognitive significance of controversies which ignites negative sentiment within any given discourse?
Admittedly, a comprehensive analysis of data alone won't cut it. Yet,
I suppose, humans do operate on foreseeable patters, which is why history is so important to study. Accurate historical education gives us access to a species level collective knowledge, yet there are clear forces at play that seek to manipulate historical truth for the benefit of the few, at the expenses of the many, and then label all who disagree with them as controversial, or worse.
So today I ask:
Why is it controversial, to talk about topics that may enrich the knowledge of our past?
Why is it controversial to question, when questioning is the very basis of learning?
Why is it controversial to openly refute the systematic erasure and rewriting of established historical fact?
Why is it controversial for me to question, when they do the very same thing in reverse, clearly showing a double standard in place
And finally why is it controversial to have a different opinion even when it's based on facts?
The moment children, students, citizens, humans, feel afraid or ashamed of asking questions, preassured to hide their interests, even when said question was asked in good faith with the right spirit of knowledge seeking, the moment the court of public opinion deems appropriate to judge people based on what may be, we'll be replacing "innocent until proven guilty", with Innocent until I'm offended.

There's a youtuber called Westside Tyler, he's a former marine, artist, writer and left leaning youtuber, he's also into history, military history and historical weapon youtubers. He was watching Metatron videos on stream and his chat was constantly misrepresenting Rafael's views as him being some sort of racist, fascist who hates anything none white as well as people accusing him of not knowing that Europe wasn't white in the Medieval Era because Muslims lived in Italy during the medieval period, despite the fact I've never heard Raf say that in any of his videos, and the Muslim's mainly lived in Sicily which low, and behold is where Raf is from, I'm sure he's more than aware of his own local history. Most of these guys that are left leaning and calling Raf a fascist are people who have probably never left the country they were born in and only speak one language, I even got into a debate with some guy that said Raf is guilty of being a fascist because he say's the same things right wingers say, so he is therefore supporting their messages intentionally or not. Tyler the actual guy himself is great, and his channel deserves some spotlight but his chat and fans are so quick to judge just because Raf is against the modern ideal of historical revisionism to make historical societies look exactly like the modern world

Take the "shady mechanic" trope, then extrapolate it outward. Why aren't we allowed to talk about things? Why must we be condemned and conditioned to repeat the past, "like poetry it rhymes" ? Ask yourself who stands to benefit. Create problems to sell the solutions. With enough time and effort, we can advance past that and arrive at just selling the problem itself and only ever selling more problems that need solutions thay "might" be achievable. Sell nothing and promise everything, deliver on none of it, new problem is sold to sell new promises of future products and services that never come to fruition or are unable to deliver on even half the promises. Accelerationism in order to keep things the same for a few but worse for everyone else. The few don't care, as long as they stay comfortable and in charge.

We need history tubers that are more aware of their own biases and that, like Metatron, can admit what those biases are. So that when they put forward an opinion about something that's more ideological than factual, we all know where that opinion comes from. Then, that makes them more deserving of trust when they talk about facts, and not ideologies.

I was in an extreme fundamentalist environment and was yelled at several times over the years for asking questions. (My dad, and even one of the teachers in the fundamentalist college I attended, surprisingly, reinforced my thinking for myself. My dad's views were conservative enough, but definitely not aligned with the church my brother-in-law was pastor of, so I had questions.😁) Fortunately, I was able to escape several years ago. The close mindedness to questions, and the truth is not limited to just certain people and groups, in my experience. However, these tend to be a very vocal minority. Just read the news, and it's all over the spectrum now, much more than even a decade ago. Right, left, centerist, and any fringe group that you can think of, today. Fortunately, the majority seems more rational, but less likely to speak up or out, letting the extreme elements seem more relevant than probably they should. Speak up! You are doing a great work, Metatron! Glad to see you intend to keep being a voice of reason!

It’s the running contrary to these toxic, divisive narratives that is deemed “controversial”. 10 years ago, no one would have given much thought to these topics outside of an academic exercise. The only thing that has changed are the narratives against the Woke mob. “Wokeness is intolerance dressed up as politeness” and Metatron has rightly called this out as manipulative and abusive.

With ideology comes inherent blindness, they can't be separated. Principles are another matter, since for them to be principles, you have to stick with them, even though you don't like the immediate outcome. The ACLU demonstrated how this works in Skokie in the 70s. The new ACLU has abandoned this principle, since they've publicly stated that they'd no longer take on such cases, if they didn't like the organization getting silenced. It's also come to light that many colleges that have a history of deplatforming speakers they find unpopular now want to hide behind "free speech", since the deplatforming crowd's taken the position that the rape and murder of civilians being war crimes isn't a principle, and the recent intentional use of both are legitimate war tactics, as long as the unpopular people are on the receiving end of it. There's much more to this list of abandoned principles, for both of the main factions in the US, but those two are both recent and glaring. For a list of my principles, look to the Bill of Rights as it was written, not the modern reinterpretations that have watered down those protections to a very low level of protection. Just ask any lawyer dog.

Unfortunately the social media culture has made people ridiculously intolerant. Not of race, sexuality or gender, but of difference of opinion. So many people want everything they don't like or they don't agree with to not exist. And they will resort to the most vile tactics to erase those things, or people. I am trying very hard to be more reasonable and mature. When I run into something I don't like or agree with or when something I used to like has been ruined, I don't spend my time getting outraged. I just disconnect or disengage from it. Apathy is a better statement than constant complaining into the ether. Related to that last point, I am certain that there are millions and millions of people online who are absolutely addicted to outrage. They love that rush of chemicals to their brains when they find something that makes them angry and thus they intentionally search for such things. You can see that on both sides of this stupid "culture war". I have had my run-ins with that feeling and I really, really, really don't want to get swept up in with it again.

  • @bewawolf19

    @bewawolf19

    4 ай бұрын

The fundamental issue with Apathy however is it's inability to drive change. A great example of recent times is the censorship of gaming mods on Nexus if they do anything anti-woke. You can respond with apathy and desist using the service, but if no one who does political commentary on it complains about the censorship, most people won't even know that Nexus decided to start becoming political and won't get informed as to what happening. This is then also ignoring the fact that being emotional and pressuring and lobbying for things often times results in that being done. The solution in my opinion isn't apathy, but rather to be able to remember both good things are occuring as well as to make sure one is engaging with things both non-political and political from an opposing point of view. As apathy only is as important as the economic or social hit from the individual, it is just a remarkably poor way to make any statement. Quite literally, most likely no one will miss you when you are gone as none are even aware as to why you left. Being addicted to outrage is bad, but becoming abstaining entirely from the culture war doesn't change the fact that a large amount of the culture war is over imposing their beliefs on others irregardless of if they want it or not. You can't be disinterested from it if they are not disinterested in you.

Apathy isn't enough anymore, if you don't pick a side it suddenly is controversial too and people get outraged at you for it Best solution is get off of the internet and if you see something you dislike in media and products stop consuming it to not financially support it without being an outrage goblin

Controversy can be a good thing too. - I tuned into your channel because some of the various content you're working to produce, aligns with the topical themes that interest my pursuits. Its enjoyable to get a different perspective on the same general themes I entertain. Especially the more obscure historical interpretation. - I mean, if I disagee on points, I'm capable of speaking for myself.

Excellent video! Finally, someone who highlights that discussion is not an "argument", discussion is a rational, calm engagement on different ideas. One doesn't have to agree in the end, but one can be enriched from the experience if the understanding is there that there is information that may be new and relevant. That is how we got to where we are, and we are regressing because people seem to be abandoning rational discussion for ideological grandstanding based on a single perspective thanks to cognitive bias and cognitive dissonance. More videos like this please! People need to be taught how to think again, not just how to consume "information"!

The way America is going you’re now assumed guilty until proven innocent which I find sickening. The flow of discussion and thought is being stifled by woke politics. Cancel culture has run rampant on college campuses especially when it comes to conservative speakers.

Much respect to you. You're among the VERY FEW sane, honest people, who's got the balls to stand their ground! Your programs are historical, factual, that's why I watch them, without the ideological crap, that's why I watch them. This world becomes unbearibly mad. You hit the nail on the head here, I start to believe, the aim is for us to stop talking on any topics, to have no knowledge, ignore facts and let them drown us in sick ideology. No questions asked. It's far worse than 1984...

Metatron, my guide, I think that you should make the videos that you feel you want to make. Absolutely keep on providing your gold standard videos on historical ideas, actions, arms and armor, etc. Your videos seeking to bring light into the dark of today's media who write whatever trash they want misrepresenting the facts, are equally important, so keep it up, I totally enjoy all your videos, and when you lose your mind over some really stupid presentation I enjoy it all the more. remember there are always crackpots that will criticize those that try to straighten out people with facts. well done.

It is interesting to note that you and I have independently observed and drawn the same conclusions on such topics. I for a while thought of doing the youtube channel route, but being creator takes far more effort than I would like to dedicate. However in my line of work, actually dealing with people of all sorts of variety on a daily basis, and having the privilege to engage them one on one, I find that most are not nearly as radical as they seem on screen, and without a camera pointed in front of them. That being said, in your chosen arena, carry on -- I enjoy your content and adding to what I've already learned along my way. Pax Vobiscum!

Love your videos. I absolutely love history and absolutely love that you approach it with pure facts as the basis of your content. Frankly, doing otherwise by definition makes the content not history. I would love to see you do a video on the history of Isreal/Palestine starting from the Roman period and the Bar Kokba rebellion. I know a bit of the history but the way you present the facts makes it easy to get context and understanding.

Listen, mate, I consider myself of a history buff and yours is one of the few channels I get the most out of intellectually. You ask questions I haven't even considered to take into perspective and you answer them clearly and without any bias as far as I have seen. Yes, there are times when you present something and I need to dig a little deeper and find other sources that will confirm or correct your answer but mostly, you are dead on point. Your channel is educational and entertaining, so don't change your format, your topics, or (especially) the questions you ask. Keep on going with all that good stuff, do what you do, because, let's face it: People that criticise you without any facts and sources will never convert, no matter how hard you try (see flatearthers). Thanks for being here - and stay many more years!
