In this week’s episode, we delve into James' journey of renovating his apartment in the vibrant neighbourhood of Tiong Bahru. With a vision to fuse modern sophistication with traditional charm, James embarked on a meticulous design process to transform his living space into a reflection of his personal style and the rich heritage of the locale.
At the core of James's design inspiration was the desire to cultivate a masculine, urban ambience infused with hints of Bali's serene vibes. Central to this vision was the preservation of the apartment's original elements, a homage to its history and character.
As visitors step into the home, they are greeted by an entryway adorned with a corten rusty steel door, reminiscent of the wrought iron gates that are ubiquitous in Tiong Bahru.
The living area serves as the focal point of James's apartment, designed to be open and fluid, conducive to both relaxation and socializing. Custom-made furniture and shelving, inspired by the scaffolding commonly seen in urban landscapes, lend a contemporary edge to the space, while a swivel TV adds an element of versatility, allowing James to enjoy his favorite shows from multiple angles.
In the kitchen and dining area, James opted for an open-concept layout, fostering a sense of connectivity and conviviality. A custom-made travertine table and island anchor the space, providing a focal point for gatherings and culinary adventures.
The balcony, with its original mosaic tiles and Scandinavian-designed wooden chairs, serves as a tranquil oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of city life. Here, James has created a sanctuary where he can unwind amidst lush greenery, reconnecting with nature in the heart of the urban jungle.
Even the bathroom has undergone a transformation, featuring a micro-cement sink countertop for an industrial aesthetic and hidden storage cleverly concealed behind the mirror. Every detail has been meticulously curated to enhance functionality without compromising on style, resulting in a space that is as practical as it is aesthetically pleasing.
Through his renovation journey, he has succeeded in creating a living space that transcends the ordinary, offering a captivating fusion of modern luxury and timeless elegance.

I've watched countless videos of renovations, but this one might be the best I've ever seen. An amazing marriage of beauty and livability in such a small space. He mentioned the design detail of vertical dowels to add texture to a couple of doors, but he didn't point out that the vertical striations actually form a theme throughout the home, and even appear by chance on the concrete wall he exposed in the living room. I wonder if he took his cue from that. I was struck by his clever design of the bathroom sink for two people. (The only detail that seemed rather confining was the niche for the stove top.) This should win awards.

I've watched hundreds of similar videos by various channels over many years, and this particular apartment is one the best I've ever seen. As a Feng Shui consultant for many years, an oddly shaped floor plan can be a nightmare, but the way this is organised is superb. Attention to detail and the organisation of each area of the space is excellent, and beautifully executed. I would be happy to live in such an apartment myself.

Absolutely stunning but i will say this: feels like a hotel room. Even the art is just like random color blobs. I wish people with great taste for decor weren't afraid of adding some personality into the space.

I agree. Feels like the decor was chosen just for a ‘look’. None of the ‘inherited from my dad’, present from a friend’, bought this on a holiday’ stuff. Some colour wouldn’t detract from the overall. But I also love this space and would happily live here.
I love this home very much. I love the thoughtful design, such as the low and long base cabinet that anchors everything and serves as a bench by the door. And the execution is meticulous. This is a favorite.

So many beautiful and clever features of this home - the front door, the door in the master bedroom that fits perfectly in a "niche" when fully opened, the gorgeous shelf that runs from the hallway to the living room, the open bar, the TV that swivels, the stunning island/dining table, the accessibility of bathroom/powder room amd how beautiful the entire space is, the folding mirror in the masterbath that's also for privacy, and that study room that converts into a guest bedroom. I also love that the owner chose a Murphy bed that is minimalist and "clean". One can sense that even a simplistic Murphy bed was well thought of. Really stunning design 👏👏👏

What a well-designed, liveable and beautiful apartment. It may be considered 'masculine', but as a woman I find it ideal. I think the use of patinated stone, plaster and concrete together with the warming wood and greenery makes it calming, warm and cocooning. I like the very well considered storage and flow. Bravo.

Every aspect of this space is absolutely stunning!!! It definitely isn’t sterile but, rather, it has so much warmth and dimension because of the materials used, as well as the minimal styling. It’s obvious that every aspect of this project was extremely well thought-out. It’s just exquisite.

This is one of the best thought-out renovations I have ever seen! Your Architect/Designer, or both should be super proud of themselves. I know that this is a masculine space, but this old girl really loves the warmth of the wood and the life of the greenery juxtaposed against the endurance of the stone. The attention to detail in this apartment is inspirational. It's a beautiful complex to begin with, but the owner has modernised this home very tastefully. Love the use of timber and iron throughout the home as it blends perfectly with the softer, greenery elements.

One of the most beautiful, practical, welcoming flats I've ever seen on KZread. I love details like the bedroom door fitting in the wall. Many positive adjectives come to mind, however 'masculine' is not one of them. Thank goodness, in fact. I think I like it so much because it feels so unisex.

I absolutely love that there are two entrance and exit, front and back stairs of this home. I love homes with a secondary back exit, not just a primary front entrance. The new layout / redesign is actually practical and pretty.

Absolutely gorgeous home, renovation would have cost a huge bomb. Sidenote, if you've been wondering why our hdb resale prices are going through the roof, seeing who the owner of this unit is will answer your question. This is who singaporeans are trying to compete with in the resale market.

What a great apartment. Probably my favorite that this channel has featured. I particularly love how they worked around the master bathroom and wardrobe facing the neighbors directly with the mirror, and the accompanying sink is such a great detail.
