An Architects Own Home Designed As A Modern Bungalow Surrounded By A Luscious Garden (House Tour)
Ойын-сауық
For an architects own home, Mark Motonaga, homeowner and creative director at RIOS pulled together a range of design elements that makes his home feel safe yet joyous. Located in Los Angeles, Modern Bungalow was once an original single-family residence. From the start of the project, the architect envisioned a modern home that could fit the scale of the original structure while reimagining what a bungalow could be. By creating a jungle-like refuge in the back of the house, RIOS has established a juxtaposition to living in a city. To do this, the architect reversed the typical bungalow layout by putting the public spaces at the rear of the house and the private spaces to the front. Moreover, featured in the backyard is a pool, which is different to the traditional backyard pools often designed in the city. Built to feel like people were swimming in a pond, it is complemented with a jungle-inspired garden that grows right up to the edge.
At the beginning of the house tour, two large grey doors open up to a side courtyard referred to as the home’s foyer. This space allows for the opportunity to continue to the backyard or to follow the house into the main space of an architects own home. In the main section of the house, the kitchen, dining and living are combined in an open plan and windows frame views out to the rear of the jungle-inspired garden. Down the main corridor of the modern home is the primary bedroom and bathroom, while off to the side the house tour is the guest bed and bath. As he was both the owner and architect, there were certain challenges that Mark faced when it came to the design of his own house. However, he began to think of how he and his partner currently lived and how they wanted to live in the future. Through this process, refining and simplifying became the approach for creating an architects own home.
For the interior design and decor, the architect employed colours that offer a connection to the exterior garden and its changing shades throughout the day. With deep teal used in the main living space, the primary bedroom is given a unique peony pink decor. Moreover, the light within the primary bedroom renovation is yellow-based and helps to transform the atmosphere of the room. For the bathroom renovation, a selection of different tiles was employed, such as various blues in the guest bath and a Moroccan concrete tile in the primary. The design of an architects own home challenges how the bungalow house typology can be seen and experienced. The renovation encourages people to think about how the relationship of interior spaces can change the homeowners’ experience. With a simplicity in its overall design, Modern Bungalow is an architects own home that challenges the ideas of living within the Californian landscape.

Amazing how they manage to create that sanctuary in the backyard. It feels the house is located in a completly different neighbourhood surrounded with trees and plants everywhere.
This house is such a dream. It’s calm, peaceful, so fun and breathtaking. ❤
Distilled. Elegant . Beautiful. Effortless . A home one would actually want to live in .
What a beautiful home... that garden and pool is just heaven. So calming and embracing, Id feel right at home there.
Over hundreds of videos from The Local Project, this home design will definitely will be my inspiration for my first house :)
The outlook from the living area is gorgeous
Whoa!! That backyard / courtyard area entrance is very very cool.
It’s a great house with an even better garden. Love the dark green and need to warm up to the pink
On top of everything else the absence of a TV *_really_* calms this space down. 👌🏻🌱
Absolutely love the entryway/garden (I have a dog, he would love it too) The bungalows colours grey/black and subtle pink are lovely. A calm, beautifully decorated and designed home.

Yes! Love it. For once a right-sized, non-ostentatious dwelling that doesn't overwhelm its surroundings. And the saturated cool and saturated warm tones are delightful. I had to watch the walkthrough twice -- perhaps I'm spatially challenged or perhaps a floor plan would be good to add to all LP videos!
Love the privacy and nature!

Such a stunning video, we're honored to have Modern Bungalow featured!
My fav house so far. Love the colours! When others want a white white white house, this house is a breath of fresh air for me.
Dream house and having a cat to experience the beautiful merge of indoor and outdoor is precious!
The outside with lots of green plants especially trees beautifully landscaped combines so well with the house that creates that cool & calm feeling is perfect.
This home is a masterful blend of modern design and natural elements, creating a sanctuary where beauty and functionality converge in perfect harmony. ❤❤
Love it. Absolutely everything I want in a home.
Easily top three house you guys have done so far. This place is awesome
Man your home is peaceful and beautiful, outdoor space is just as important as interior, Amazing 👌🏽
The foyer is a really interesting concept for neighborhood builds
Refining and simplifying. Love it.
I adore this house! It appeals to my senses! Lots of love, cheers, & Mabuhay, from my end--the Philippines!
In this climate, indoor/outdoor living is very real, and the private and sheltered back yard is perfect for that. I like how he surrounded the pool with natural plantings. The interior is interesting, but a little stark. Love the sunset color of the main bedroom, however.
Stunning.
I absolutely love it! What a beautiful sanctuary
Like the casual and open air walkway to the rear living n dining. Guess LA doesn't rain so much... Nice
Please don't say pivot door, please don't say pivot door.... He didn't. Awesome! This house is legit. 💓

@@fauzianalwoga1002 Surely: Pivot doors are yes, money shot attractive...but ... 1) They're heavy and if you get a modest swing on them whilst opening and closing your door, you're in for a surprise (Newton's First Law of Motion) 2) Calibration: Again, great look but won't line up within a couple of years due to plot shifting, and if you're in California the property shits (a lot), so you'll need to have your door recalibrated (and that's expensive) 3) Pets etc: Although they provide a longer escape period, if Fido, or your child or fingers are feeling a little lazy, well.... 4)They're really difficult to weatherstrip 5) They're expensive 6) again, they're heavy and that can cause a drag on your floor (thus more maintenance) 7) They don't close on a frame; so unless it's under an overhang? So long central air, hello all the other unwanted outdoor elements In my opinion pivot doors are grand openings to a shit ton of work.
It's a dark space with shade from trees... it sounds wrong, but somehow works out right. I guess it's the large open common area space, large windows on two sides, very high ceilings. All of that gives enough air to the space and doesn't make it look dark and gloomy. I love the landscaping and outdoor area. If you look at that neighborhood, its right on the edge of an industrial area, so this inward-looking house with lush landscaping and a pond-like pool is a real refuge.
I frequently enjoy projects featured on Local Project, Architectural Digest, and Dwell, and this one is the most ideal design I've ever seen. The sense of space under the shade of deciduous trees, visible through the wide windows, is stunning.
Elegantly crafted. Beautiful work, as always! Thanks for sharing with us, TLP

Love this home. One of my favorites the channel has ever featured. Anyone have any idea about the brand of those low floor lamps? Looks like a tinted glass sitting on a metal frame? Would really like more information on them.

excellant project. "space as experience" well said. reimagining a home in this way is invigorating! bravo
Very impressive, especially given the location. It appears Remote.
A relatively small square footage but you managed to make it look and feel cavernous!
That kitchen NOT built in is mind blowing 🤯 and refreshing. The island is tailored but behind is restaurant style. Hell ya! I love the dark watery color in a sunny place like LA it really puts the attention to the garden. You’re surrounded by hardscape but you’ve made such a green sanctuary. One of the best. Inspired by you ❤
Absolutely stunning. Not quite the bungalow that we Brits would recognise! The garden and pool were an absolute haven.
I love this so so much
Beautiful. Sophisticated. Peaceful. I could go on ❤🔥🔥🔥
Beautifully designed. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🥷😎💕
Architecture without nature is nothing❤
Wonder if there is a height restriction, was waiting for the philosophy behind a single story abode. Nicely executed
Incredible.
Just beautiful 🥰
Perfection.

Very nice house located in a very so so neighborhood. When it comes time to sell, this house may stay on the market longer cause of the location.
That dark tight hallway seems to say "get out" instead of "cozy down" with little relief from the huge dark wall of the living room. The house feels like a cave and not what I would want in the fine weather of Los Angeles. Even the garden and pool seem to guard against sunlight.
Love the indoor/outdoor blend. I’m looking for a home this size to modernize. Looks like your cats are happy. Do they room outside or is the courtyard contained. Kudos on an inviting home.
amazing
I love it all except … the pink xxx
I hope the song in this video comes with the house.
10/10!
The cat is a paid actor.
Those are all deciduous trees - mulberry, birch, etc. I am curious what that space looks like in the winter, which in LA can be rather bright.
Love the low floor lamps. Where are those from?

Single storey
Other than the beautiful interior style, I didn't really get what's the uniqueness here in terms of architecture or design. There was a mood and a feel, but I wasn't left with something that really stuck.
Overall layout concept makes a lot of sense and is common for thoughtful builds: private front, open back. I'm not a huge fan of the high contrast (white/black) exterior and the very dark interior.
Who is the Landscape Architect
Can someone please help me get a house like this 😢. My now late mum loved simple but beautiful homes like this but unfortunately passed away too soon last year this month at just 44

Can’t see the “elevation” of the outside profile. The interior may be bungalow-esque, but I don’t see the classic, wide, comforting stance of the original bungalow design. Great interior, but I do miss the calm, earthy colors and natural decor of the antecedents.

Lovely garden. Entering a home into the living space with no boot room or cloak room is so impractial that for me it just doesn't work. It is a lovely living space but without any functioning storage too i dont see how it works on a day today. It also feels insecure coming in straight from the garden in this way.
