But the reason for this was always kind of unknown, it was difficult to pin point. So this week we bring Xander Schaufelle's putting coach on the channel to give Piers a lesson and it is amazing how simple the fix was to help Piers become a much better putter.

    @@jamesrobbins26 I teach golf, too. If you are right-handed, you are typically right-eye dominant. From a putting perspective, in simple terms, it means you're more likely to see things moving more right to left than they actually do. If you're curious which is your dominant eye, just ask your eye doctor and he'll tell you. This is really prevalent in the golf swing, too. Beginners tend to aim WAY more right than they should and it's just because that's what their right eye is telling them to do. In the golf swing, the simple use of the club across your chest with the grip pointing towards the fairway will tell you where your body is aiming. In putting, it's not that easy because you're talking about feet and inches rather than hundreds of yards. This teaching lesson does a great job of showing this. He aimed, what looked like, at least 6" and sometimes a whole foot, more right than he should have. If you struggle with aiming, this guy's fix is brilliant.

    not only did I love the bluntness of the expert you brought in but your willingness to show your weaknesses. As professors of golf, that ability to show you still don't know everything makes me want to watch more videos. They say that those that can't do, teach, but you can do AND you teach, but we can all get better, so thanks for being vulnerable for us.

    I've always thought that your video with Rory driving the ball from a few years back was your best video. This one just took the crown for me. This process is so simple, but 100% effective at determining what is actually going wrong in your putting. If you can't roll the ball through the gate, you instantly know what to work on. If you can roll the ball through the gate, is it a read or alignment issue? For you, it was a bit of both. The stroke is pure but the target and aim needed work. I've been wanting to buy one of Derek's plates for a while, but didn't see why I needed one over my SKLZ mirror aside from the portability of the form factor. This video sold me. I have a feeling this video will sell a lot of plates.

    Head tilt (we all have some) can drastically change the way we perceive the horizon. If your head is tilted slightly to the left it will tilt your perception of the horizon so that the left side seems slightly higher than the right, and visa-versa. If Piers tilts his head slightly to the right when reading the green this would negate the real slope and make it appear level (horizontal) to him. It would have been interesting to do the same test at the same hole but from the opposite side. The Putting Plate looks like a good bit of kit 👍

    I agree. Feet first ignore the eyes. Pick the slope on feel pick aimpoint on feel and trust it. Eyes see distance. If you can’t feel right to left or left to right , then use eyes to best guess which side of the “hole” to put it in. Based on the entire green or grain.

    I had the same problem years ago and I was truly a horrendous putter. I mean bad! My eyes and stroke were totally disjointed. I figured this out on my own by buying a 36” metal ruler at Lowe’s and forced myself to learn how to putt down the line while forcing my eyes to look back and forth at the center spot at the far end of the ruler to re-teach my eyes to marry-up the actual line with my putting stroke. When I began, I couldn’t hit a ball down the ruler missing 10 of 10. Now, I can roll 10 of 10 down the ruler occasionally missing one off the edge. I also purchased a putting plate to force the same on the practice green. It took about three seasons and weekly work and putting down the ruler throughout the winter months. I now hit on the line I see and I’m considered an excellent putter at my club.

    I've had problems putting as well. My instructor told me to start using the line on the ball to line up putts, which I started to do. So, I get behind my ball, I read the putt and I align the ball on my chosen line. Then I stand over the ball and 99 times out of 100 the line on the ball looks like it is aimed way left of where my chosen line is. Most of the time I end up ignoring the line on the ball and adjust my aim more to the right. So, something is happening when I stand over the ball. It's like I see the break better from standing over the ball than when I'm standing behind it. So, recently, I've stopped using the line on the ball and seem to be getting slightly better results. Now, I position the ball so I see nothing but blank/white space and just trust my eyes. I found the only way I can get the line on the ball to look like it's pointing on my chosen line is if I have the ball directly under my trail eye, my right eye, my dominant eye. I don't know if that's coincidence or if that makes sense. Anyway, I am going to start using an alignment device like you've shown in this video when I practice putting from now on. Thanks, great vid.

    Great demo! I wonder what additional affect putting on what is essentially a hilly, canyon course has on Pier's ability to read breaks. Having grown up and played around southern California the old adage of "it breaks toward the ocean" goes right out the window on hilly courses if you don't first recognize whether your putt is going up canyon or down canyon. Your thoughts?

    It’s not just a question of trusting your feet or your eyes. It’s when do you trust one or another. From behind the ball looking at the hole, the read can be different than when standing over the ball. At that point, the feet may or may not play the part. I sometimes change my read when over the ball because my eyes see a different line. One could argue that it’s because of my feet. But what if I tell you I don’t use a square stance but a very open stance? Think about that. This was an excellent video. I would love to have a conversation with the master as I’ve been considered the best putter in the club for most of my career.

  • @lindsaynewell6319
    @lindsaynewell6319 Жыл бұрын

    Really interesting but I want to know how the break looks to Piers using only one eye. Does he have a dominant eye that is messing up his read? That used to be a problem for me. Also, at 4:25 his feet look to be aiming way right with his shoulders pointed at the hole - like he’s set up for a hook shot. When I got fitted for a putter last year, we started with some laser assisted aiming and I was consistently aiming the putter face several inches to the right of where I thought I was. Often I would then pull the putt as an unconscious correction. Fitting fixed that and some other issues and I now putt a lot better and more consistently.

I know that my eyes have to be about 3 inches inside the ball line and three inches in front of the ball. I have the S7K standup putter and when I help bad putters I use it to test and correct their eyeline setups. The worst advice is to have your eyes directly over the ball. It only works if your head position and eyesight are perfect with zero astigmatisms.

    Not sure if I really grasped what the solution is, but I guess this was an exercise in determining if your eyes are seeing the line/slope properly? So, more of a diagnosis, than a correction ?

    Halfway through the video and I have a similar issue specifically on left to right putts where I cannot see those breaks. Right to left putts I can see fine, but I misread so many left to right putts it's silly.

    I have problems where I line up a put using a line on a ball and then standing over it, it seems completely off. Creates doubt and therefore can't commit to a particular line.

    I have this same problem. I once played a tournament and for like 14 holes I had no idea where the putts were going. Mike Malaska has an interesting take on this. He feels that getting your eyes directly over the line skews your view of the line. That could be correlated to which eye is dominant. I moved back away and more upright and feel like I see it better.

    This is exactly what I did - after seeing the same video. I went from a 33" to a 35" putter, I stand much taller and open, I'm right eye VERY dominant, and my putting has dramatically improved - like insanely better. I also practiced Tiger's one-hand putting drill for a few weeks until I felt my right hand completely in control of the face and able to putt 1-handed almost better than 2-handed, and now I just place my left hand on, after my right hand is on, without moving my right hand (thus also partially why I went with the longer putter), and I would now say that I've gone from being a poor putter to a well above average putter.

    @@wallstreetoneil I game a 34" putter. I had always gripped down on a 35" so when I finally bought a new putter I just went with the 34". I'm still able to stand taller and away from the ball. I'm left eye dominant so the line really did have a tendency to looked skewed. I've been practicing with the blast motion sensor to dial in the speed and tempo of my stroke for more distance control. So far so good. I also have committed to using aimpoint for reading greens. That has felt like black magic for reading greens. I've had fairly accurate results with it.

    @paul O’Neil , you stand open when you putt, meaning your feet/ stance? That is interesting. See that with long arm lock putters but haven’t with normal putters. Will try that out….i experimented at stores w arm lock and feel I see line well with an open stance but can’t get myself to buy one.

    I'm definitely that person who lines up the line on the ball to the start line and then stands over it and goes, "that doesn't look right." Then I correct on the fly without resetting for pace of play.

    The Golf Guru admits he sucks at putting. That really made me smile. Watching the video though, I realize you have a great stroke, it's reading the green that's a problem. As the teacher mentioned, one's eyes and senses have to be aligned. But I'll guarantee, I can be on putting greens where my eyes and senses tell me one thing and the ball does the exact opposite. Most assuredly though, good puttters have stroke, green reading and ball speed down.

    Andy - you might have the same problem I do. I discovered this year that my dominant eye is twisted significantly relative to actual horizontal. So if I rapidly switch looking through my left and right eyes, the horizon angle changes! The only way I can read a green is to close that eye and look with the other one, which sees properly. Discovering this profoundly improved my green reading.

    Is that astigmatism? Or something else? Because I know I have astigmatism in my dominant eye and wonder if I have a similar thing going on.

  • @TedInoue

    @TedInoue

    Жыл бұрын

    @@bemba187 it is something else. It is an actual twisting of the eye. So the vision can be totally in focus unlike astigmatism, but it causes things to look rotated compared to what your brain thinks is level. So for example, when I close my left eye and just look with my right eye (which is the twisted one), if the green is perfectly level it looks like it is sloping towards the left. Because of this I was always aiming to the right of the hole thinking that the ball would roll down to the left!

    In a feet reader. Since the 80s. I've always had an issue dealing with setup trust. At address the feet and ball are in a certain relationship. But that's the point where the ball travels fastest and break matters least. Reading the rest of the putt then trusting it ALL once at address again is tough.... imo.
