This Thing Beats Me...

Ойын-сауық

This is a bit of an unusual review, since I've never struggled that much trying to figure out how to cut with a particular sword (or sword-polearm hybrid in this case?) before.
** Specifications **
Overall length: 177 cm / 70 in
Blade length: 87 cm /
Weight: 1.75 kg / 3.85 lbs

A Yari is technically more a spear than a polearm. So his comment was quite correct. Spear = knife on a stick = stabby stabby Polearm = large pointy thing on a stick = swosh swosh While you can also chop with a spear its better at thrusting. You can also thrust with a nagamaki, but it's made for cutting, not stabbing. The only odd one is the naginata which can fulfill either role.

Being an anti cavalry weapon, the Nagamaki was not desined to be used as a normal katana would traditionally be handled. The longer handle gives a clue as to how it would be optimally used. Against forward moving calvary, it would be used quite like a spear. The wielder would drop to one knee, turning sideways, and brace the but of the handle against the inside arch of the foot and the ground. The longer handle would then ensure that the wielder could maintain a two- handed grip and added the benefit of being able to swiftly change the angle of the blade as cavalry charges would break and sweep. Against cavalry in melee, while the weapon surely posed a thrust and cut threat to the rider, the main attack would be to bring down the horse. Unlike the Katana, a Nagamaki would be held horizontal with the handle across the waist or midsection. this difference is why many sword wielders have trouble with this weapon, with nearly all swords, the wielder generally generates swing and cutting force with the arms. In the case of the Nagamaki, the force of the swing is generated at the hips, using the body as both brace and fulcrum. One could easily imagine this design and technique being needed to slice through the very thick leg bones of a horse. Yes, it can be used to fight footman as well. But remember, Samurai and their retainers never went into combat with only one weapon or means of defense. Undoubtedly, the warrior armed with a Nagamaki going into battle would have also carried a wakizashi for close combat, and at least one other blade of utility. I hope this makes sense @Skallagrim

foot bracing is all nonsense Calvary was never used that way the horses where never used to trample squads of men mainly because a horse aint that stupid and would refuse cavalry was mainly used to poke at people with spears using the horse as a height and reach advantage and ofc mobility so they could flank no one ever used horses like in that William Wallace movie ,... thats all Hollywood Bs horses tended to fight infantry at spears length using allot of side ways movement of the horse.. basically facing the infantry side ways and not frontal the infantry statagy to defeat cavalry was to step into the horses stride and strike at the neck of the horse.. hence the longer reach on anti cavalry weaponry

The way the Samurai used the nagamaki didn't allow them to use it to its fullest potential. If we watched an experienced wielder, you'll notice more effort towards dexterity than strength as the whole body is the driving force behind the swing.

It's relatively light and it's balanced towards the middle, so that's not the case. The reason Skall couldn't make decent cuts is probably because he's not used to the feel of the handle/balance of these types of sword. Besides, I believe they were used to cut at horse's legs which are relatively thin, but I might be wrong. I'm enthusiastic about Japanese culture but I'm not an expert by any means.

Hello friend, I doubt all of you will take to time to read through this, but for those who do. I am a second Don in Kenjutsu, and specialize in this weapon. I am a currently a instructor for the Ryu Tensho style of Kenjutsu. In this comment I will be explaining some proper handling techniques, and some of its intended design. I know what you are probably thinking, "oh no, another key board warrior." So to challenge that, I say this. I have spent the last sixteen years studying Kenjutsu in japan, and from other Sensei's of different schools in different country's. The style I studied the most is Ryu Tensho, or dragon rotating palms. Similar naming and flow to the Karate style Goju Ryu's Kata know as the Tensho. Its know for being soft, but extremely dexterous, and fast. The Nagamaki in my school is a standard katana length blade/sometimes Nodachi length depending on persons strength and size, with a handle that equals out the blades weight to where you should be able to balance it on one figure a inch below the Suba. This allows for effective movement, and very powerful strikes with minimal effort. A example of why this is important is at 4:48 when the gentleman in blue trikes true but does not allow the blade to extend. When using a Nagamaki for a 1-10 mat cut I release the front grip slightly pulling my front hand back allowing the blade to travel forward taking full advantage of the curved edges position allowing for it to have more surface area of the curve to cut through. then towards the middle of a multi mat cut ill transition my main hand back to standard. [refence 4:48 postion for standard and 4:55 for where your primary hand should end up before transitioning back.] making the blade pull back into a stronger position letting you finish with all clean cuts. The problem with our friend here is two things. One is his form, and base. the issue with this cut 4:50 is he is not striking true, or straight so it rolls off. Two is the blade you are using is likely to dull to do Tameshigiri. Remember a cut from Paper does not mean it is sharp, it just has a edge. The Nagamaki was also designed for anti personal, as well as Calvary. Although I prefer the Nagamaki in a open duel combat situation to a katana. And id prefer a Nodachi to when it comes to Calvary. I absolutely adore sparring with this weapon, when trained its like having the defense of a spear, with the offensiveness of a sword. The reason for this is Its longer handle allows for quick pivots like a spear to bring the tip around the oppositions guard with relative ease, and parry incoming strikes into a offensive strike at your opponent do the power difference of the lever handle. it allows you to completely overwhelm a opponent nine times out of ten in a one on one if they are using a standard sword which would be common. Even two on one situation with medium to experienced opponents i have found it is fairly easy to defeat them with no "injury" to ones self with the reach and speed advantage of the Nagamaki. Of course as the same in almost any martial art, two masters vs one the two will very likely win. [As a note, we do kill training meaning in sparing with Boken non lethal moves will not count with this weapon. As we train we learn to kill as efficiently as possible. Which is the purpose of Kenjutsu. As a example we consider any hits to the forearm, upper leg, upper torso, and head kill shots. any others are dismissed because they can survive to strike again. If you ask "well why forearm and upper leg then? Those are non-lethal". Remember this young padawon, If you cannot hold a sword you are dead on my follow up move, if you cannot stand you are dead all the same.] As for form Its not really a strength weapon. Its all lays in technique and body movements, for I have a weakened body after a car wreck although I actively still do full contact sparring. If you would like me to make a video demonstrating Proper techniques regarding the Nagamaki, both offensive and defensive, and all the positives and negatives that go along with it I would gladly do so. I can also write a post, or make a video regarding katanas as well if this gets enough attention. Note, the major downside of the Nagamaki is the skill and techniques required to use it. Much like a proper Zweihänder. I recommend two years of kendo, of any style of Kenjutsu before attempting to learn this weapon a foundation is required to build a home. Anyways i hope those of you the read through this learned something, and have a nice day!

You should use a wider stance than normal (at 1.25 - 1.5 times shoulder width). You don't cut by "reaching out", but rather by "drawing in". Your leading hand is used either as the fulcrum (for short/faster strikes to parry like you use a guandao) and then sliding the lead back while pushing your other hand forward in as a thrust (similar to an Ahlspiess, Yari, ranseur, Spetum, or Naginata thrust) or your back hand stays locked near your body (as the fulcrum) and lead hand does all the movement (for more power and longer cuts). Your lead foot only carries 20%-30% you weight and as you shift for your long cuts, your lead takes on 80% your bodyweight. You don't let it lift you. Watch your cuts again and you'll see you lift on the downstrokes. Use your back hand to draw the blade back in a smooth arc and your lead hand will gain the weight as the centrifugal force tries to make the back hand the fulcrum. (Like a Poleaxe does.) This is a weapon of finesse more than strength. The oval has a tradition coming from bamboo as a traditional material and it helps you know which edge is the cutting edge. The sori is deep on many Japanese weapons because you block and parry off the back and sides of the blade. Never the edge. That "flop" means you can loosen your grip (slightly) making the back "flop around" to take the incoming strike, not the edge. Edges were often the only hard steel of good Japanese swords as the core and skin were of softer steels. Prevents that hard edge from snapping the whole blade. It's one of my favorite weapons. That and the odachi. Used them for years. If you'd like more advice on basic form, feel free to ask, Skall. ✌

I realize this video is quite old, but it recently popped up in my feed again. The difficulty in cutting is 99% technique. I had the opportunity to wield the nagamaki that did the world record tameshigiri cut. I tried in 3 separate sessions to cut even just a single mat with it, and I couldn't. With a regular katana I can get 6 to 10 mats on yokogiri, but not even 1 with the nagamaki that can do more than 20. Controlling the blade alignment is a very unique experience and is much easier if you've trained in Chinese broadsword than other forms.

One of the rare things about these is that most (or some sources say all) of them were turned into katanas after the end of the Sengoku Jedai (the Warring States period). They had like 250 years with peace, no wars or significant battles, arms switched to be more focused on courtly stuff and formal duels than field battles. No real use to bring them back in the Meiji Restoration era. Biggest advertisement they probably got in the 20th century is from Itto Ogami, the Lone Wolf had a couple built into his babycart.

I think the main reason your having so much trouble is because this is meant to be a stopping weapon, it uses the force of the horse to assist with the cut, so if you look at it that way a horse traveling at 20 something miles an hour and a human swinging at the legs, then you have both a bone crushing weapon and a cutting one. Also I see that you are holding the blade like a normal katana, but a normal blade has more blade than handle which assists with cutting, but when you have a longer handle the balance is off, so if you wanted a better cut, hold the blade much further back on the handle and do a wider swing with more momentum you need to do a proper twist with your body and do a proper step in and you should see a very drastic change in cutting power because with your examples your not getting enough momentum and speed to be and effective cutting weapon also sharpen the blade, I've practiced with weapons like this before when I was younger and it doesn't matter what kind of weapon it is if it's not sharp it wont cut, yes there are blunt like weapons that can cut (axe's), but clearly this was not even close to being sharp enough, with the weight of this weapon and the step in twist of the human body, you should be able to cleave a man in half with this thing. hope this helped.

It is a very specialized sword, and i prefer the Yari (for the Spear is The Superior Weapon (XD))... But the technique for cutting with this kind of sword (the most vigorous cut) is more hip based.. In my experience, i remember that this particular blade is good with this 2 types of cuts: - A distant straight and fast swing hitting with the upper region of the sword (near the yokote line).. This gives a very powerful but shallow cuts at a comfortable distance...(it is like the movements you made but you were kind of 'stiff'... and you should hit with the 'head' of the sword in this kind of cut)... - And the "scenic technique" (XD)..a super vigorous cut but with a short range.. you rotate your hips and 'pull' the sword with your arms, kind of replicating the swords curve.. and you get an incredibly powerful cut... But it is really (at least for me) an unwieldy weapon, or a weapon for specialists... But it is beautiful.. it reminds me of those giant swords or 'votive' swords they used for processions and etc... It can be a lovely decoration...

yeah, from the vids i watched on youtube of people using nagamaki, instead of "swinging" it down or diagonally, they tend to "spin" it sideways with your hands holding the sword around your hips. probably meant to cut horses legs and take down whoever riding it, which would makes senses for the blade to be thick and a little blunt since it has to deal with the bones on horses legs.

That Nagamaki has a particularly long (like very long - they were said to be 2-3 shaku in the handle and 3-4 in the blade) handle. Essentially the blade length was close to the handle length. In use its technique was closer to Katana than Naginata (i.e. no grip swapping). Traditional kendo of Nagamaki (yes it's a thing) really loves the "jodan no kamae" or what you know as "Centre Vom Tag" and the motion is like an accelerated, controlled, "fall" into the cut and follow through.

Nagamaki was a choice as ōdachi/nodachi were available. In the Edo period many Nagamaki were reduced to Katana/ Wakizashi. Note: Sengoku era wakizashi could be essentially just another katana. In the Sengoku naginata in ranks were found to be cumbersome and Nagamaki were issued instead. That's all my research tells me - Id love to know more and do a real deep dive on the Nagamaki. I think so too. Also, I don't know wether it is supposed to be as blunt (not sharp) as the one you have here but it might be designed that way for endurance as it is supposed to be used against cavalry. So try holding it around the bottom part of it, red part and below, and cut from the side upwards. I am not knowledgeable on blades so i might simply be wrong.

Phireus F.F.A. My first thoughts as well. There’s a reason the red band is there, and it may be to separate your hands when achieving ideal cutting leverage. You can hold the blade normally for front line self defense, but when the Calvary rapidly comes in, you have little time. So release your grip, it rapidly flips upwards, tighten, and uppercut slash. Catch the rider in the armpit where armor is weakest, or catch the horse under the draped on armor. Seems effective for that purpose, not so much for others.

Interestingly enough, the nagamaki was worn by Oda Nobunaga, known to be a brilliant strategist. I believe it to be because as he himself, the blade offers many options. Its far more maneuverable in tight spaces than most pole-arms, yet at the same time it has far greater reach than most swords, it all depends on how you use it. It can fit the purposes of both a katana and a naginata, making it a sword that, if mastered may trump them all. It needs to be noted however that nobunaga wasnt famous for his close combat strategy, but for his use of fire-arms and advanced formations with them, so i may be reading too much into this.

Are you sure your not confusing Oda Nobunaga with Uesugi Kenshin? Uesugi Kenshin did use a nagamaki and had a retinue that carried them. Also. Although Nobunaga was definitely a brilliant tactician (I don't know if I would say strategist. He was ruthless and hot-headed which caused him as much problems as it resolved) I tend to think his use of firearms came from fighting the Ikko Ikki which had somewhere around 3000 arquebusiers during the Ishiyama Hongan-ji campaigns. He had more than a few defeats from that to learn fromby the battle of Nagashino.

dude, as you said, this is used by Jigen Ryu. Just check out their videos. They hold the sword with their forearm attached to the tsuka, and press down with their entire body. The strong part of the katana is at least more than the midsection. If you look at Yagyu Shin Kage Ryu, they dont hold it with the forearm attached, but then they cut more with the tip. You are holding it like a normal katana, which dissipates the force given the sword's length. Moreover, so what if it doesn't cut? The horse is coming full force towards you. It will kill the horse and bring down the rider. And don't forget the shock damage. The main point of battle field fighting is to kill your opponent. What is a sword that doesn't cut? It's just a very hard steal stick. You'll still die if you get hit with it with enough force.

  • @chrispritchard2331

    @chrispritchard2331

That style leans more to killing your opponent in 1 cut. The cut being heavy and full to do the maximum amount of damage, thus killing your opponent and not allowing a recovery. For heavy cuts you need a bit of leverage or to space your hands out. It wasn't out of place to see practitioners hold the blade at the dull part near the habaki with shorter katana, so they could have the leverage to make a deep cut. Of course if you want more leverage and deep cuts into a mounted rider then you need a blade that can do it. This was it.

@@drb5538While the yari, as with all spears below around 2 meters tall, is easy to use, it's not the case with the naginata--it's basically a katana placed on a pole & usually VERY long, making it requiring specialized training to use. the invention of the nagamaki is more of a novelty or curiosity as opposed to truly develop a combat weapon for widespread use. it's basically for those who kinda wanna use a sword & not sacrifice the reach of a polearm, but ain't proficient enough to wield a naginata, & of course, reluctant to use a yari due to lack of versatility outside of combat. It is worth noting that unlike the katana, which are quite standardized weapons due to their statuses as weapons of lords, nagamaki ain't standardized & you can find many different handle to blade ratios. the term 'nagamaki' simply means 'long wrap' after all, & ANY sword with a handle longer than your usual katana but not quite yet a polearm, qualifies as a nagamaki. your blade could practically be that of kodachi size & shorter, & the overall length less than five feet tall, it'd qualify as a nagamaki so long as the handle is noticeably longer than your regular katana ones.

Regarding the sword: I'm just spitballing here based on my knowledge of body mechanics, but might it be deliberately designed to rotate upwards? What about a diagonal upward cut to a horse's neck? If you were going to thrust at a cavalryman or his horse with a blade shaped like this, wouldn't you want the blade side up for better piercing geometry with the point and curve?

Contemporary art seems to suggest so, too... Both for that and its Chinese equivalent (the nodachi), although the latter has a less extreme handle, meaning it is more appropriate for a style combat ressembling traditional sword techniques at close quaters (whereas a nagamaki handles more like a polearm).

I was thinking something similar regarding the sword: that trying to force it to point in the direction one would expect from a traditional Japanese sword is using it against its design. Consider the evidence: 1. The sword tends to "lay" naturally with the edge facing upward, not downward. 2. Trying to force it to lay the other direction, for horizontal and downward strokes, seems to have been ineffective. 3. Skallagrim seems to have even injured himself trying to force the sword to do what he expects it to. I don't know much about Japanese swords, but it does seem unusual for a sword to be designed so counter-intuitively for intuitive use: rather, it seems like perhaps it's designed to be used in a specialized manner that fits its unorthodox design better. Add to that the fact that its intended target - cavalry - is a very different thing from the infantry that other Japanese swords are designed to be used against, and I think we might see some clues to what's going wrong: for example, an armored horse's most vulnerable area would be its lower legs and ankles; also, a cavalry unit's biggest advantages (and vulnerabilities) compared to infantry are its weight, speed, mobility, endurance, and momentum: I would consider the possibility that a sword like this might not be intended to be swung at a charging horse, when the charging horse already has a tremenous amount of power hurtling it towards the sword's blade. Note also the advantage to such a long handle compared to the sword-length blade: the advantage of that handle seems to be in its leverage and maneuverability. I'm thinking maybe this blade was designed for cuts low to the ground near a horse's ankles, and probably wasn't designed for wide, powerful slashes, but rather short, accurate thrusts and sweeps into the path of a big, heavy, fast moving target, perhaps used by a warrior who is himself running toward and out of that charging horse's path. This unusual sword's form suggests an origin as an agricultural implement, such as a scythe, and I'm inclined to think that this, too, might suggest the secret to the way it was intended to be swung and used....

Richard Sabo You maybe right ... From my own experience of Battojutsu practice, the way you draw is really, depending on most positions, a draw-cut, so, since the edge is pointing downwards, as you draw from the scabbard, you sweep the blade upwards, in an arc ... my own spitball then is that you adopt a stance, the blade tip pointing down, and to your side (so kinda at a 45o angle ...), with one hand about an inch from the tsuba, and the other half way down, then do a sweep-cut upwards, with most of the momentum/rotation coming from a combination of you shoulders, and hips, at the same time ... a downward cut would be the equal, but directly opposite, of that, with the blade tip almost behind your head ...

@@nigelft In a battle, the weapon should generally already be drawn, unless you're having to transition to a different weapon, or falling victim to a sneak attack. This weapon does not seem like a sidearm that a soldier would just carry around all the time, mobilized or not. While the draw is important in all armed martial arts across all cultures and times, I think that cutting from the draw is not the primary intended purpose of this weapon. Musashi himself wrote, "Do nothing that is of no purpose," so I have to entertain that the odd handling characteristics were for _some_ purpose. I could be right or wrong - I'm just throwing the idea against the wall to see if it sticks to anything.

The issue with the Nagamaki is that it handles a lot like a Naginata just with a longer blade. This means the cuts are done with a sweeping draw and it doesn't at all feel natural when holding it. It's also considered one of if not the most difficult Japanese bladed weapon to use effectively and it was mostly used by Daimyo's close personal guards such as Uesugi Kenshin's personal retinue. That being said, the easier to use Nagamaki are generally only as long as up to your chin. There isn't any set rules on how long they are suppose to be, but that's generally what most beginners go for as it makes it easier to control. The majority of Nagamaki from the Muromachi period (during the Warring States Period) were usually around 50-54 inches in length overall which also confirms the height of up to the chin vs average height of Japanese Males of the period. It should be noted that few if any Female Samurai used the blade, as it seems they overall preferred the Naginata over it.

I find it very easy to use - but then again I've learned to use all weapons. If you train specifically only with swords for years and then have a polearm in your hands it will feel very different. As a amateur you can easily chop away at things with a sword and be fairly successful, because most beginners just stand there and use their arms. With a nagamaki (and naginata) you need to move your entire body according to where the blade is and is supposed to go. You do wide long steps (or many many small ones) to position your body to "pull the lever". The longer the handle the less your arms actually do at all. Small nagamakis can be spun around using staff techniques, but if you have one taller than yourself that obviously becomes impossible (you'd hit the dirt). So it becomes an entirely different fighting style. If you are a good sword fighter as well as a good polearm/staff fighter you will find it very easy to use a nagamaki and enjoy the benefits of both weapon classes - cutting like a sword and range like a polearm.

3 factors are holding you back on that weapon. The highest critical factor is, your injured. Stop. Just rest for now and let your body heal. Do light working on it, rehab, just go easy on that shoulder till your ready. Second factor is the blade's edge, yes that is a dull weapon and either made on a false edge or just dulled over prolong use or cleaning. Sharpen it up, clean it, make it hair line ready again. Finally, training or not, it's just practice... but practice with a dulled weapon and injury is what we call 'false practice'. It is improper methods that does not lead to improvement in any way. Go back to reference one and two. After healed and ready, after sword is touched up and sharpened... then, practice it for a time and get use to the unique grip and maybe spend time watching a few of the masters to see their hand placement and use of the grip. I'd like to see you re-do this video in a few months when your healed and gotten a few practice swings in once it's touched up. Please get better first and foremost, then try again for us.

Now I was taught this was to lock your wrist against joint manipulation (like the old trick when someone tries to squeeze your hand to hurt you while shaking hands), but you also keep the wrists stiff because the katana was meant for a drawing cut, not a hack or chop. Part of the reason they cut so well is that you drag the edge along the target instead of chopping into it like you would with an axe. From how I was taught you cut from the core and the shoulders and drag the edge along the target to cut. Other's may word this differently or have been taught otherwise, but this is what I was shown to do.

If you swing it from around or below that red material, you will give a lot more momentum to the blade during it's cut. It's just a katana with a longer handle for a much more powerful cut

Actually, the goal of anti-cavalry blades in Japan was to be able to kill the rider while sparing the horse if possible. Horses were expensive in Europe and mainland Asia to be sure, but in Japan where they were not native and the mountainous region was not ideal for raising large herds, they were a fortune. Killing the horse was still preferable to dying, of course, but whenever possible you wanted to kill the rider without injuring the horse so that it could be caught after you won the battle and you could mitigate some of your massive wartime expenses.

  • @stupidburp

Saving the horse was preferable but winning the battle was essential. Thus, despite the waste horses were indeed targeted on some occasions and some weapons were designed and used for that purpose. Historical art shows horses being targeted.

I do believe it is ought to be handled sort of like a scythe, especially since you mentioned it was used against cavalry. Grabbing it up high and way down should give you a nice cut if you use your waist like others have mentioned.

Skallagrim, unfortunately there is not much footage from you trying, but from what I can see you try to use your arms too much and from that you loose control and thus speed and edge alignment. From what I learned about japanese styles, they focus much more on hip and feet movement, with minimal arms. Unfortunately I havent handled a Nagamaki, but we have a staff technique that I would use: put the right hand right at the tsuba, the left at the kashira(pommel). Move the left hip forward (only turn your torso or take a step, both are viable) hold the left hand in front of your belly and the right hand above your head (or to the side). Then turn your hip all the way around and move your left hand to the hip (that's all the arm movement you do, belly to hip) the right arm follows the arc of the swing until it is straight (it ends far in front of you). Alternatively you can bring the nagimaki into position, then move your right hand down to a katana grip and swing it like a greatsword.

I wan't even talking about the shoulder injury, just about the nagamaki usage, but improper sword usage could also damage the shoulder, if he has a habit of janking his arm behind his back with force(like I have seen in this video) that would put strain on the shoulder.

He sometimes also does the same in HEMA techniques. The secret to any fencing is to maintain a more relaxed posture in the arms. They just serve as a transfer and directing system for the power and speed generated by the legs. Hence, the universal admonishment to keep the back straight, knees bent and feet evenly spaced in pretty much every form of sword fighting world wide. This enables the most powerful muscle groups we have to do the work, and keep us from wrenching shoulders, backs, elbows, wrists and even (as a former student of mine who relied on way too much strength found out) necks. All Japanese swords rely more on the draw motion in the cut to make them bite into a target. Straight blades drag their way through a target, while curved ones have to be kept in contact- hence the draw. It’s simple physics. One that big needs more balance and a wider stance to be effective.

I have been taught two simple rules: 1. Never move your hands behind the plane of your body; 2. Keep your hands the same distance from your center plane. If you violate one of the rules you probably need to move your hips. If you see a japanese swordfighter pull the sword back for a wide swing, you may notice that the head and feet are aligned forward , but the hips and shoulder are turned all the way to the side so that the hands are still in front of the body even though the sword is all the way back there.

Looking at ancient Japanese art, the Nagamaki is seen, being used by warriors on horseback, using the length of the weapon to impale opponents, before they can even get close to the horse (Polearm). I guess if the warrior is dismounted if the horse dies or gets injured, the Nagamaki is probably designed to double up as a Katana for close combat. That way, they don't have to carry both types of weapons for mounted and normal combat, but make it a 2-in-1 deal. Neat little bit of (brutal) history. 👍

The Nagamaki uses a low swing, cutting upwards. It also uses overhead strikes for a finishing blow to a fallen enemy. The weapon utilizes repetition.
