Gauze is only used on wet/weeping wounds to absorb the fluid and for packing fresh wounds to stem blood flow. It absolutely shouldn't be used on a tattoo because the crust that forms on the surface of the skin will fuse to the gauze. It can result in the tattoo scab lifting/tearing off and damaging the tattoo, or worse, fibrous pieces of gauze can seperate and leave threads in the wound exponentially increasing the odds of infection.

​@@emelfia only if it's sterile, but it is still a textile and can leave fibers behind. You can get packs of non-sterile gauze at any riteaid or CVS. It just doesn't make sense for a tattooist to use it on fresh ink.

There are also non adhering dressings made of gauze (which is not the case here, as the dressing seems very much adhered) that is used in burns and I believe should be okay to be used in tattoos, as they won't cause the aforementioned problems.

I agree with you, Lauren, for several reasons: 1. That signature is going to look like a crappy squiggle in five years 2. Artists like painters sign their work because, as you said, their art can get sold and resold numerous times, but you can't transfer a tattoo to a different person. You can't resell a tattoo that's on someone's body - even if you re-tattooed the same exact art on someone else, it could heal differently or look different based on the skin tone and care over time. And this tattoo wouldn't have been created if that client hadn't walked in with that photograph of his father and asked for a recreation (not to mention the intellectual property gray area of getting pop culture tattoos - could you even sign your name under a Spongebob tattoo?). Tattooing is a collaboration, and the canvas is a living, breathing person. As much as I appreciate the art form and wish that it was taken more seriously in traditional art spaces, this is NOT the way to gain respect or recognition.

I can see an art lover asking for a signature on a tattoo. Especially one done in a painterly style. HOWEVER, this particular artist seems like an arrogant, self absorbed person. In the multi-client signature video, he blessed them from the window like he was the pope at the end 😂

As a painter and a tattoo apprentice myself, I’d only ever be comfortable signing a tattoo if it was my own original art, and not a recreation of something else or a realism tattoo. Additionally the client would have to ask for it, it would have never occurred to me to do it on my own pieces I’ve done, including ones that are original art. Also, Definitely wrong for those artists hiding things within tattoos. Doing anything without consent is extremely unprofessional and just gross.

I remember on a tattoo TV show for cover ups/fixes up, this guy got a tattoo of his dad's old army unit tattoo and later on when he got home someone pointed out the weird letters. He realized that the person put their own initials into the tattoo, completely running the reason why he wanted a exact copy of his dad's tattoo. It was horrifying. 12:29 lol. This is it. That's the guy!

I wrote a comment earlier before I read this but basically i 100% agree. I don’t think it’d be that bad if the artist created the design from a concept or had their own tattoo designs and got permission before the application to not only sign it but show the client exactly how it would look with it. But to sign a memorial piece done in realism from a photo that is obviously incredibly personal to that client is a little wacky to me

At first, I didn't think that it was a big deal. I've been going to the same artist for 8 years, he's done 60% of my body in tattoos, and it feels fair that if he wanted to sign me as a living canvas of his art that I should let him. BUT . . . we're on great terms now, he seems like a good dude. But what if he isn't? What if he's a scumbag and hid it all this time? What if he's been committing SA on clients and I didn't know? His art on my skin would be bad enough, but to have his name on me after that? Nooooooo. Hell no. So like a partner's name, I think it's like it's safest and wisest not to have your artist's name on you. You look amazing as usual and I love the jacket! Thanks for another good video! 😊

I would never tattoo a partners name on me, because it’s bad luck and I’m convinced it will curse a relationship. My parents got wedding rings tatood after being married for 16 years because my dad is a mechanic can’t wear it to work and my mom was tired of taking it on and off to do dishes, now that! ​​@@yassine8935​ while a regular tattoo can be disassociated, them putting their name on you is BRANDING you. having the name of an abuser on your body is far different than having an innocuous piece of work done by them; one is personal to you and can be distanced from them because it isn't related in any way other than being their work, and the other is personal only to them. it would be normal to want a coverup or removal for the tattoo itself, too, but you need to understand that having the name of someone who has committed SA on your body is different than a piece of art done by them. this being said, the artist in question (as far as i know) hasn't done that, of course. but in this hypothetical, those two things are of two VERY different levels. if they actively want it, then sure. personally i feel it's a red flag to put a signature on somebody's body forever that will look *horrible* in a few years. those thin lines are not far enough apart to heal well. it will be an illegible blob by year ten. it would be totally understandable if it were a loved one, but that just isn't the case here

Haven't finished the vid, just got to the point of the question being posed "why don't tattoo artists sign their work" in my opinion theres no need. It isn't an inanimate canvas that can be shared, it's a human being capable of saying who the artist is. The person has the signature as information they can share, people don't need to read it off their body. That's my take at least

I do totally agree that a human canevas is usually able to tell the art's story, but we're not always reliable. We can lie, vaguely remember, suffer any kind of amnesia... But, also, tattoes will mostly live as long as human memory, bc when people die, the skin will no longer exist. We will still have photographs, but - maybe with some exeptions of tattoed skin conservation ? - it's no longer the original, not like some 500yo paintings that's still here

traditional art is capable of being stolen or resold, copied or made by forgery. but it's a completely different story with art on a BODY. and someone else made the point that you can't exactly transfer a tattoo from one person to another, which yeah, very true. so to me, signing a tattoo just reads as excessive ego. And given that this guy was handing out money he signed like he's an A list celebrity or something, i'm gonna go with this being about ego, not even the art

I think a big problem with the signing is the "branding" angle of it. Having somebodies signature or name tattooed on them traditionally is a pimp thing. Like youd have your pimps stamp on you Coming from an angle like that, a tattoo artist just signing his work has a very different undertone than a painter signing his canvas.

I would say that by FAR the most popular example of getting names tattooed is by regular couples getting each other’s name. I knew of someone who did this! She would hide it in the tattoo and not tell the client. Her name was Kat and she would hide a tiny cat paw print in her tattoos. The clients were pissed when they realized it. The shop she had closed down soon after opening. I was blown away at the first one I saw. It wasn't even that hidden, just small.

so it used to be a thing in the american industry for mentors or shop owners to tattoo their initials or the shop name onto their apprentices. obviously, many people realized this was really weird and icky and it’s not done anymore. it started and is now only used by predatory artists who just cannot stand that they ‘get no credit’ for their work. we all know that’s just not true. it is quite easy to sneak an initial into a tattoo and many artists in america still do. Kat, it seems, included.

See that would be fine if it was something she made sure the clients knew about before hand and could ask to not have included in the final tattoo. Having something you do every time you draw up a tattoo design is fine, as long as the client knows and wants it there.

If someone signed me like that without consent I would seek legal action. Despite what Ink Master says, 'human canvases' are humans, not paper. Nobody is going to be able to trace and recreate that exact tattoo so copyright sign the design, not the living flesh. It seems like that artists is marking people as his property like a dog pissing on a lamppost. Red flag. Also, what if he's a bad person? Even if you didn't know, that signature could be interpreted as support/cult mentality for the artist.

And even there they told a tattoo artist off by doing something considered a signature, that was putting his own birth hour into a clock on their tattoo

I personally wouldn't let a tattoo artist put their name on me, just imagine if they do something horrible and you're stuck with their signature on you 💀

So here's a different take--I'm from South Africa amd here artists who makw public art (statues, sculptures...) are not allowed to sign that work because it now belongs to the public. Made a statue that stands in the middle of a square? Great. But it belongs to everyone now, so you cannot mark it as your own the way you usually would. I view tattoos the same way. Once you've put the tattoo on someone, it belongs to the client, therefore, you cannot mark it as your own as you normally would do with your work. Simple as that.

Ok, but try to see this in term of art history. What if my great grandma bought a Picasso painting in 1923, and just scrubbed the signature. What if everyone did that, or what if Picasso never signed his paintings. It would be impossible to have a proper catalogue raisonné, very hard to distinguish it from a forged painting. It's not the same for tattoos of course, as they die with their owner, while paintings can be passed on, but signatures are extremely important in art.

I'm a nurse, and tattoo apprentice, and it seems it is not gauze, but hypafix. We use transparent hypafix for tattoo (it is like saniderm/second skin), but the regular hypafix I've only seen it in hospitals. It is a kind of stretchy fabric material with a layer of adhesive under it (just like saniderm), so the fabric doesn't actually touch the skin, it's the adhesive. I've never seen it on tattoos but I don't think it would be problematic

I’ve used tape like that, mepore, and it’s really adhesive. It’s WAY stronger than a film dressing.I can’t imagine using it on a tattoo.

I've only seen that kind of tape used to remove henna/jagua. Any adhesive on or near a new tattoo could cause a potential allergic reaction. Primarily latex based left on too long.

I am a living advertisement for my tattoo artist. She made it clear that my tattoos and the process of getting them are supposed to be about me - every single step of the way. As a result, I tell everyone who ever brings up the subject of tattoos around me about her and how incredible she makes the experience of getting her beautiful art. My husband will also do this and he doesn't even have tattoos. On top of her excellent work and service, we *like* talking about her because it brings back the positive memories and feelings that she put effort into providing for me. Multimillion dollar brands can struggle with brand recognition - an illegible scribble isn't going to increase your sales or brand awareness. However, positive word-of-mouth will, especially when it comes to local services.

I dated a guy who idolized a specific tattoo artist, flew many miles and spent thousands to get several pieces by him, and came home ecstatic one day when the guy agreed to tattoo his signature on the latest piece. I don't think I'd get one myself, and I absolutely condemn any artist signing without consent, but there really are these fan boys lining up out there

I would hate that, but as a painter who went to art school I also HATED signing my artwork. I just think it takes away from it. I’d always just sign the back lol

My friend had a tattoo artist design their entire lower sleeve. They absolutely adored the work, it was all original, and at the end of the sessions they actually asked the artist to sign it. It was fairly subtle and blended into the piece. The friend is also in the creative field, they’re an artist themselves, so I feel like for them it was respecting the tattoo artist hard work and talent, and they asked for and consented to having it included. They were super proud of it. I happen to know none of their other tattoos before that had signatures. I think there’s certain instances, certain people, and certain tattoo artists where it may make sense for one reason or another to have it signed as long as there was no coercion, underhandedness, and there was understanding and consent before it was added.

Yeah, consent is key. As a tattoo artist myself, I'd be OK with another artist signing their work on me if it's original, if it goes with the piece (like as if it's an actual painting) and if it's discernible enough not to bleed out into a blob and ruin the look of the tattoo in a few years. Phrasing the question is also pretty important. "Now I'm just going to sign it, OK?" = no. "Hey, so now that we're at the end, would you like to have this tattoo signed by me, as part of a good memory and just so you remember you have the original artwork? It's absolutely OK if you'd like to leave it as is instead" = sure.

Okay.. if my whole body was covered in tattoos from just one artist, hell yeah add a small signature, they did all that, I’m happy, it looks sick… BUT how would it work if you go to different artists?? Like.. imagine a patchwork sleeve and every tattoo has a different signature.. that’s damn messy?? Also not everyone’s signature actually looks good yk. And even if you really like the artist, imagine them signing you, going to another artist, and them asking if they can sign too and you gotta say no… mad embarrassing. This all ignoring the fact that this dude literally called his signed clients ‘living advertisement’… the vibes are just off

I practice Old school painting as Oil Painting & watercolor & we’re thought that yes it’s recommended to sign your work, but you’re strongly encouraged to do it in a discreet way that gets lost into your work, your signature should never standout because as you said, your style & Art it’s your true signature. Even some artists sign their art but at the back of the canvas or on a place completely hidden from plain sight

Agreed but the other thing to consider is that the canvas in this case is a person. Having anyone’s initials permanently scarred into the body is a very personal thing, even if the artist does it discreetly. There’s no need for a tattoo artist to sign their work because there’s not the same reasons for having a signature as in traditional art formats. When traditional artists do it, it’s a signature. When tattoo artists do it, it’s a brand. They’re not signing the work, they’re signing the person.

I guess if the clients cool with it, I can’t really find a problem with it, but it is weird that a bunch of people would get his signature tattooed on them like that. It’s such a fine line tattoo, the ones were people got it on the side of their hand is going to have no longevity, it will look like a pen smudge for who knows how long.

One of my concerns with the signature is what if that artist does something you consider reprehensible? Signing a piece of art that's on a canvas or printed, you can just rehome or get rid of the art. That's a lot harder with a piece of your skin.

Another channel called “celle” did a story today regarding other peoples apprenticeship experience and the very first story was someone getting secretly branded in every tattoo their mentor did on them. That’s scummy. But he also tattoo’ed her back, on blast, with no ink. NO INK! On purpose! No, I would not get a signature, not a partners name either. But artist have sued over their art. Like wrestlers getting sued because the tattoo was shown on tv or used in a toy or video game.

I designed a tattoo for a mate 25+ years back, a red demon on his shoulder. He got it done, it looked vaguely like my drawing but had RW initials at the bottom of it, the tattoo 'artists' sig apparently. I was all 'since when do tattoo artists sign their work?' I've never seen it done before or since til this video, although being from a small town back then, I did immediately notice a lot of RW sigs on people I served over the bar at the time.

I'd not let an artist sign their name on me, would feel uncomfortable. I'm perfectly capable tellling who's done which piece. The traditional canvas arts cannot speak, thus the signature telling who did it. (plus my tattoos are from existing ideas, branding them as someone's own would be...ehh nah.)

I always felt like the tattoo it’s self was the tattoo artist signature especially if you go to one that specialises or is well known in an art style. Of course people are free to do what they want and as long as the artist ask if they could sign and the client consents then I guess it’s fine. Personally I don’t want names of people on me at all. I can’t imagine with all my tattoos having signatures on them 😅

It's just very obvious that all of this is out of ego for the artist in this case. As others have said, this isn't a painting. You can't transfer a tattoo, and you don't need to verify who did the work for authentication purposes. If he wants to sign something, he should make a piece of art that's not in a person's skin.

If the client knows beforehand that the signature will be there, I don't have an issue with it. The signature is small and not intrusive. It's sort of egotistical on the part of the artist to just tattoo his signature only, but again, if the clients want it, no problem. Hiding the initials or doing it without consent is not acceptable.

I remmember the AITA and surgery post! that was wild. Imho I think the surgery branding would be worse for me, because you are unconcious while it's done - and so the medical proffesional doing something like that while I am not in a condition to refuse it - is far more icky for me. Also tattoos are mostly able to be lasered off. For if I would want a signature or not - I think if I came with the idea, or a photo I wanted replicated, then absolutely not. Then the artist is "simply" the means to an end (that sounds horrible but I hope you understand what I mean). There are different skill levels, but there will be multiple artists able to create the idea or photo to a satisfactory likeness. But if I go to someone who have an extremely specific and unique looking style - because I want something from that artist, then I am not opposed to it. Because then I go to them specifically for what they do best.

The problem with this is consent. If a client said "yeah, I'm fine with you signing your name under the tattoo" then there's no problems there. The issue is that in the various examples I've seen of tattoo artists putting their name in clients' tattoos (yes, I've seen multiple artists do this) the clients did NOT consent to having the artist's name on their body. If you are PERMANENTLY drawing something on someone, it is NOT okay to draw something that they did not consent to have on their body. These are real people, not inanimate canvases. It's the same as how cutting a person's hair without their consent is assault. They're a human being, not an object. You can't alter their body without their express permission first. I'm not sure if this specific guy got consent from his client, but I've seen other examples of tattoo artists branding their clients without their consent and making up crappy excuses when they get called out. I hope victims of these practises sue, because they do not deserve to have their body permanently altered without their consent.

We use that gauze like after surgical operations. It is an adhesive under and the surface feels a little like cotton, and we put tegaderm over it to make it waterproof.

A good tattoo speaks for itself. If someone asks about my shoulder tattoo (which I love!) I will absolutely brag and point them to the artist. If they ask about my leg tattoo (which I hate, so sloppy with lots of blowout) I'll let them know where not to go. If it turned out the person who did my wrist came out as a horrible person while I like the tattoo I would be able to separate the ink from the artist and it wouldn't be a permanent advertisement for that artist

Just because I sign my paintings and drawings doesn’t mean I expect the people who commission tattoo designs to suspend their acknowledgment of the preexisting social implications of having a signature on their body. I hope it was requested, like when people get autographs in marker and then have it tattooed.

I asked my artist to "sign" my half sleeve of bottles in some way because she does amazing work. She wasn't comfortable putting her name on someone's body (totally valid) so she worked a little K into one of the pieces so it looks like a maker's mark in the glass. There's many ways to work in a signature without literally signing someone's body, and whether it's in the tattoo or not should probably be up to the client whose body will carry that art to the grave.

Imagine if this became normalized and every tattoo artist did this There would be people with patchwork sleeves who have like 25 signatures on their arm alone xD

As a (non tattoo) artist, I do sign most of my works. But I think it’s odd to sign your clients. I have actually seen clients ask fir signatures from artists and that isn’t odd, especially when it’s requested. Not giving your client the option or doing it without their knowledge like the AITH one is horrible.

My view (as a fellow non-tattoo artist) is that a inanimate canvas, be it a traditional or digital one, it can pass between hands or be stolen, or a whole bunch of other things where it’s removed from its original context where credit would be given. It’s VERY hard to separate a tattoo from a person without removing a body part, not to mention that person can just say, “hey this is my tattoo artist”. An object can’t.

I don’t think anyone should ever get someones name tattooed on them whether it’s a boyfriend/ girlfriend’s name or a tattoo artist it makes no difference it’s a terrible idea because what if they turn out to be a bad person?

I would 100% NOT be okay with a tattoo artist signing their work on me. I’m an artist myself so I understand that signatures are baked into promoting and protecting your work. But human beings are not inanimate objects and permanently scarring a “signature” into someone could mean something very different to each client. I wouldn’t get my partner’s name tattooed on me, so why would I want a virtual stranger’s? Consent beforehand is a must, but I’m also pretty anti this trend for tattoo artists. It feels icky to me.

As someone who admired art since childhood I don't mind it (not obscene) BUT ONLY if consensual. WE ARE PEOPLE, NOT A STREET WALL. And you know I consider their flash (depending on artists) is unique to them. That's "branding" . In my opinion.

Thanks, everybody.. really. There's just so much going on, and I'm absolutely heartbroken. I'm sending good thoughts to the rest of you, esp those of you who are also struggling. There's just so much pain and hurt now, and there's nobody in the world to comfort me.

when it comes to digital art vs tattoo, tattoos and commissions are very closely comparable, really the difference is just one is a png and the other is on your body. if i commissioned someone for a digital drawing, there would be an expectation that the version of the png that I personally received would be without a watermark. maybe not all of the time, it depends on the use, so like if i wanted to use it as a profile picture for branding a youtube channel let's say, I would expect there to not be a watermark or signature, in the same way that i would show off a tattoo to other people i wouldn't want there to be a watermark or signature

I am an artist, I do traditionnal drawings and paintings and I was confronted with basically the same situation few years ago but the other way around. Many years ago when I was still in highschool, I made a drawing for a good friend of mine at the time, and obviously sign it like I sign all my art. We lost contact for years due to her moving away for college and when we got back in contact few years ago, she showed me on her back, the drawing that I made for her when we were teenagers. She had it tattooed on her, with my signature and the date that I draw the piece! At first I was shocked because now I have my name written permanently on someone! The tattoo is beautifully done, exactly as my drawing, which is so cool to see, but I did ask her why she added my signature and everything because she could've remove it for the tattoo. She said that for her my signature was a part of the piece and it was the best way for her to respect my art. I can stand behind that opinion. Was weirded out at first but now I don't mind it. It's a personnal choice! If someone add a signature to your tattoo without your consent it's not ok!

Have you done a video on rixardtattoo? They post loads of tattoos that seem to be a form of performance art, which seems pretty cool if you're into that kind of thing. However a lot of the tattoos seem to be badly done, often looking as though they go way too deep into the skin.They're also usually done outside, some have been on a moving vehicle etc which doesn't seem possible to be sanitary. I feel like I could get behind the concept if the tattoos themselves were better. They've also done some 'branding' tattoos, including one that was a full calf piece.

Yes I saw that! The comment’s definitely had a lot of conflicting opinions. Like why couldn’t they just use a stencil of the child’s hand instead of risking them being hurt, there’s the contamination risk, doing it outside, accidentally tattooing the kid, so many things!

I tattoo for almost a year now and already was asked about signing my work once 😂 Haven’t done it, told the client that if they will be getting more pieces from me and still be wanting this signature - I’ll do it

I'm a tattoo artist and I recently had a client request a signature. She said it was in case i got famous some day...I just gave her an autograph on some paper but it freaked me out. Signing tattoos to me just feels like something that's not done, period.

People get celebrity signatures tattoo'd on them, people get family names/signatures/messages tattoo'd on them all the time. I don't see an issue if it's consented.

As a traditional artist, I would not want initials or a signature on me. I've even argued with people who copied another artists work as "practice" and signed it as their own. Nope, nope. A signature means something, in my opinion, even today. It's a mark of ownership and authenticity. I remember this old episode of InkMaster where this tattoo artist did a clock and explained that whenever he did a clockface, he'd tattoo the hands as the hour or date of his birth. The judges absolutely ripped him to shreds for that. Might be one of the few instances of actual ethics on that show.

As someone with an in memorium portrait tattoo (a type of artwork that is literally as old as art itself) I would be absolutely appalled if the artist had signed it! Let alone something like trad or neo-trad!! Like my tattoo is a dedication to a celebrity who meant the world to me, it would look so bad if there was a signature by it. Even my trad spider would look weird as hell with a signature. I don't want some random person's name on my body just because I decided they were a good match for a tattoo I wanted or because I liked a bit of their flash... Not to mention, the signature's gonna look like trash once it's healed for a few years! And if anyone ever wants to know who did a tattoo of mine, I tell them! I even give their instagram name! This is just such gross behavior imo

there's a woman tatto artist here in France that does a similar concept except she only "signs" if the clients want her to do so (and even has flashes dedicated to the whole thing that incorporate her signature), but there's a whole sisterhood/clan aspect behind the "branding" tattoo itself (not in a "you can't sit with us" type of way of course), she also does flashes and personal projects too, but i find the concept quite cool in her case

I think the reason tattoo artist don't sign their work is because the canvas is alive. The canvas is able to say that they got this tattoo from insert name of tattoo artist here.

As someone in the BDSM Lifestyle I would feel so devastated and extremely violated if an artist put their name on my body because in ways I belong to my partner and should only have their name on me. Depending on the piece I'd consider allowing some kind of distinct markings, not a name or initials, but it's highly unlikely I'd ever get a piece worthy of something like that anyway

I love your videos so much! I don’t know why it took me so long to finally subscribe, but now I have.

I know that towards the end of his life, Lyle Tuttle would only ever tattoo his signature on people and I know of at least one person that got that tattoo from him. Then again, the guy had been tattooing since the 50s and he tattooed freaking Janis Joplin. No idea what this kid has done to achieve that level of clout, but to each their own.

as an artist who does paid commission artwork - most other artists i know and myself DO NOT sign work someone has paid for unless they as for it! usually only personal artwork is signed. the purpose of the signature is identify whose work it is- if someone sees a tattoo and likes it enough, they'll just ask who did it. if getting a romantic partner's signature is considered a nono i dont know why this wouldnt be.

I'm studying to be a painter, and I think even in paintings that are made these days (physical, idk much about digital), a visible signature can be seen as a bit tacky. I usually sign my paintings on the back, so it can be checked but it doesn't distract from the image.

Happens a lot on japanese bodysuits normally in the style of a woodblock print, ive got a full suit by the same artist and we didn't leave a space for the print so on my suit one of my frogs is tattooing a foodog so we did the artist signature block on the foodog as though the frog had signed it, but this artist is very odd as are his fans by the look of it

I work in a medical field. Typically with wounds we have a strip of non adherent pads, which will absorb without leaving fibers. Similar to the texture/material of the small pre made bandaids. They are usually made of cotton and other fibers but it has a certain smooth texture to keep it from sticking and it’s sterile. This is held in place by a second layer of sticky tape/dressing that doesn’t directly touch the wound.The material he used in the video looks more like what we would use as that second layer adhesive tape/dressing. That gives me the ick because it’s usually painful to take off of even healthy undamaged skin. And the adhesives can be really irritating to a wound. And about the signing… a regular art piece is separate from a person and when the artist does that work then sells it the person buys the artwork as is. But when it comes to commissions (like tattoos) a client has a specific request and can usually argue that they are entitled to art without a signature or branding. Not immoral so long as a client is aware it will be part of the piece but highly egotistical.

If the client is alright with it, that's great, a piece that looks like a gallery piece looks like it deserves the signature. However, other than that, I see tattoos the way I see graphic design; the client pays for a piece of art & that art is never signed without specifically asking for it (& I know in graphic design would be very, very rare). I feel hiding initials or a small mark to be a kind of signature would be more acceptable (especially if it's worked into the design really well & isn't super noticeable) but it must be consensual since it is still the client's piece in the end.

I think the signature thing would really be a case by case sort of thing. Like: if the artist makes absolutely gorgeous pieces of original works? If their signature is a symbol/logo rather than their name? If they know how to include the signature without disrupting the tattoo piece itself? If their client wants their signature? Then sure, go wild, why not. People get autographs on themselves all the time (a lot of them even getting those autographs made permanent by having them tattoo'd afterwards), so it's kind of in that vein but combined with the concept of artist signatures. At the end of the day, it's really on the client if they want something like that and they should never be forced or tricked to get the artist's signature.

I (25F) had gotten a leg sleeve done when I was 20, I loved my tattoo artist and the art that he had done and it took like 10 sessions to do. Me knowing to was going to take a long time and be expensive and loving his art I early on asked him if he could sign it when it was complete because I know that it’s pretty normal in the realm of painting and such that artist will sign their work. However he respectfully told me no and that he didn’t want to do that. I’m really glad he told me no, I don’t think I would mind if his name or initials were incorporated into the sleeve but I agree to your point that the work speaks for itself, and to this day I have had people, who I don’t know, recognize the piece as this artist work without a signature

Getting gauze adhered to a wound is really painful, it pulls on all the sore bits, I can’t imagine how much that would hurt on a new tattoo. Anything that is going to be weeping a lot isn’t an ideal candidate for gauze if you’re dressing it at home, that’s why you use specifically non-adherent dressings on cuts and things.. When it’s used in medical settings, they soak it off, which I’m guessing isn’t ideal for a new tattoo.

We are living beings not paper/canvas, so we can just tell people who the artist is. Most signatures take time to decipher what the name is anyway. Within that time I can easily just tell them who did it... Only makes sense to me if it's all prepping for when the client is dead...???? Like, those people who collect tattooed skins to put on display. Then (imo) it would make sense. No one will know who's signature that is until you verbally tell them or they read it on a sign next to the display.

Maybe signatures aren't something native to tattooing because back in the early days of shops everyone was tattooing the same flash designs & every artist in the shop had to be able to execute it the same, so it wasn't a thing. With the amount of tattoo copying that happens with popular tattoo artists I could see a future where people start asking the artist to sign their work so they can say they have an original and not a pinterest copy.

I have got to say this… The background setup you have in this video is just stunning, it is so stupidly cute, all the little BAB axolotls and Christmas decor are adorable and look so damn good 😭😭 to also redirect this back to the actual video so I don’t take away from it, I feel if you’re going to “brand” your tattoo it shouldn’t be done using a literal signature on a tattoo, maybe do like a special card you can give to represent yourself or like, simply take a photo and EDIT a watermark to make it clear it’s not actually there but it’s sort of blended into the photo to where it’s not taking away from the tattoo…

Whenever I bought anything from etsy or a commission, I always ask the artist to sign back of the piece (if not already signed) but to have a tattoo of a tattoo artist signature underneath the tattoo is wild to me. Maybe give a certificate of authenticity or something of the sorts to the client with the signature to keep but actually signed on the body like that? Okay weird but if they consented to it, whatever.

i asked my good friend sign one of the many tattoos he had done on me. he said no 100x as he wouldnt feel right before i finally wore him down and he said okay reluctantly I am very thankful that i did as he passed last year and seeing his tag daily makes me happy if we werent friends since high school he said he never would have done it

My husband has his tattoo artist signature tattooed on his body. It's a bit on the right of his belly button. The guy who used to tattoo him, for over 5 years (full arms, a bit of the legs, chest and back). They became great friends, and after one long section, he asked for it. It was over 4 years ago I believe, and this artist has passed away. He says it's a great way to remember of his friend. But HE asked for it. I mean, some people tattoo their favorite singers' signature, so why not the tattoo artist? Unless it's consensual, of course.

Him putting his signature on the tattoo reminds me of an episode of Ink Masters where one of the artist was doing a clock and put his birth time; because they thought it was cool; in the tattoo without asking the client if it was okay. And from the startled look on their face it clearly was not.

It's not true that artists always sign their works. There's basically two types of commissions - one where you give partial ownership of that piece of art and you can sign it, the other one is where you give total ownership and the art isn't legally yours anymore. Obviously, there's a huge price difference between those two options. If I commission a tattoo artist for my next piece, I expect the design to be totally mine. I mean, eventually it's a slippery slope to asking yourself what even "owning a tattoo" means. My point is that an artist's signature shouldn't be a given. And in the end that's your body and you decide what you want. Who cares about some arbitrary rules?

I have my brothers signature hidden in my first tattoo. He’s a tattoo artist. I love it lmao, now it’s a running joke and I’m getting his signature out in my other ones when I get them and I’m getting a touch up to add his signature to my second tattoo

I could see someone who is a big fan of a famous artist wanting artwork from that artist signed as part of the experience. Especially with pintrest tattoo copying being a thing, it could be something that someone wants to show that the art really came from the artist. Like when someone wants a drawing or a painting signed by the original artist. Sure, the artist might have a recognizable style, but it's still nice to have that extra touch of authenticity. (A tattoo signature is easier to stencil/copy than a painted or written signature, I guess, but that's a tangent.) I don't see myself wanting a word tattoo, for the same reason I'm not a big fan of t-shirts with words on them. There is a gray area when it's a really artsy font, or text that's integrated into a cohesive illustration that isn't only about the text. But it's one of those things were I can see why other people would like it, even if it's not for me.

The client should definitely file a lawsuit forcing the artist to pay the cost for laser removal.

i am not yet a tattooer (i hope to be someday) but i do commission tattoo designs for people (mostly my friends). my best friend commissioned my first ever tattoo design to commemorate a study abroad trip we went on together. when i drew the piece digitally, i signed it to make the print look complete without intending for the signature to be included in the tattoo itself. my friend requested to have the signature (it’s just the letter G) included because it was such a meaningful experience symbolizing our friendship and that decision meant so much to me. years later, i asked her if i could get a matching variation of the tattoo and now we’re twins! ♥️

I have one tattoo that I think would be cool with the signature because it looks like a painting and with a tiny signature in the very back I could be all like yeah it’s my painting leg. Other Tattoos though it’s not right. Either way it would have to be something that’s discussed and preferably brought up by the client.

The Black veil Twin tattooers from Salem also in a way brands the tattoos I feel like, by adding their signature spider in basically all the tattoos! But honestly that's a much classier way of doing it

I saw a few videos on Instagram about this guy. I’m an aspiring tattooist and I honestly think it’s fucken weird to tattoo your signature on someone unless they specifically ask you to and even then I don’t think I would anyways. You’re already getting your art on them for life and many potential clients, why ruin it with a signature? It just feels like branding like you said and it feels so entirely wrong imo

As a tattoo artist I have signed tattoos I've done on my family that have asked me to, both my parents and my brothers have had me sign pieces either tattooed by me or ones I designed for them to get done when I was like 12 years old. I've had one client ask me to sign their tattoo and I politely recommended that we didn't for many reasons but mostly they dont need my initials on their body when they have my work, they requested further so we hid the smallest 'CC' in a leaf, it's probably not visable now as it was minuscule, done in grey shade, hidden by surrounding shading and it's been like 4 years

This happened to my friend on the back of her leg without her permission. So bad 😢

Your jacket is STUNNING! also there is no way on earth i would let someone sign my body in that manner. If i found out that my artist put his initials on my body without my permission there would be hell to pay. additionally it would be a HUGE red flag to me if they even asked. like listen I'm not a COW I'm a person. sometimes I might look like one when I'm eating but that does not mean i am one. so no branding please thank you!

I have had multiple people know exactly who did my tattoos fully based on the style. If you’re good people can tell it’s your work
