The words are from a beloved swedish poet Dan Andersson who lived between 1888-1920, so he died young. Like someone already mentioned life was very very hard in Sweden at that time. Many swedes emigrated to USA. So you are right, there’s a tone of sadness and also longing in the song. As it often is in swedish folkmusic and I think it is because circumstances were truly difficult when much of our folkmusic were written. People were longing for better times and their loved ones that had left our country to find some hope on the other side of the Atlantic ocean.

At that time many men worked as wood workers, and they lived far away in the forest in small log cabins during winter. So he is sitting by his log fire, and he is dreaming of his beloved coming to meet him, and he has been dreaming and longing for her for many years. I don't think he has a special someone yet, but he is dreaming of her coming walking trough the forest so he could take her in his arms and carry her home and never let her go. And as always Dan Andersson paint a beautiful picture of nature trough out the whole song as well 🙂

I wait by my log fire while the hours tick by While the stars wander and the nights go I'm waiting for a woman from far away The dearest, the dearest with blue eyes I imagined a wandering snow-covered flower And dreamed of a trembling, elusive laugh I thought I saw the most beloved coming Through the forest, over the moors on a snowy night I wanted to happily carry my dream in my arms Through the thicket over there where my hut stands And raise a jubilant cry to the loved one Welcome you, who have been waiting for lonely years I wait at my mila while the hours suffer While the forests sing and the clouds walk I'm waiting for a hiker from far away The dearest, the dearest with blue eyes I'm waiting for a woman from far away The dearest, the dearest with blue eyes

This is originaly a poem about the hard life in swedish forests where men had to guard the burning of coal for weeks alone (that was essential for making steel. The guy dreaming about a fair woman will come and visit. First verse I wait at my charcoal pile while the nights suffer While the stars wander and the nights go I'm waiting for a woman from far away The dearest, the dearest with blue eyes I imagined a wandering fragrant flower And dreamed of a trembling, elusive laugh I thought I saw the most beloved coming Through the forest, over the moors on a snowy night Google translate😉

Sorry I can't make subtitles, but here's a translation, love ❤ - I wait by my log fire while the hours tick by While the stars wander and the nights go I am waiting for a woman from far away The dearest, the dearest with eyes blue I imagined a wandering snow-covered flower I have dreamed of a trembling, elusive laugh I thought I saw the most beloved coming Through the forest, over the moors on a night heavy with snow I thought I saw the most beloved coming Through the forest, over the moors on a night heavy with snow I wanted to happily carry my dreamed one in my arms Through the thicket over to where my hut stands And raise a jubilant cry to the loved one: "Welcome you, who have been awaited for lonely years" And raise a jubilant cry to the loved one: "Welcome you, who have been awaited for lonely years" [instrumental solo] I wait at my charcoal kiln while the hours suffer by While the woods sing and the skies wander I'm waiting for a wanderess from far away The dearest, the dearest with eyes blue I am waiting for a woman from far away The dearest, the dearest with eyes blue [instrumental] [outro vocals]
