This is an investment and the buyer is more than likely to gain a profit from reselling it down the line. If there are multiple people bidding 1mil+ for the skin, then it's worth 1mil+, simple as that.

Any "tangible" purchase deteriorates. The sun damages things, the weather damages things, etc. Pixels come with their own issues, but just because something would be an idiotic financial decision for you doesn't mean the buyer made an idiotic financial decision.

@@dixbyfloppin9515 you're purely speaking in hypotheticals. unless the buyer or seller have done anything against TOS like scamming, valve has no reason to remove the item from them. This is the equivalent of saying that the government could take your property because they could deem something to be against the law and in need of confiscating at any point. they do this with which animals are legal to own relatively frequently, for example.

I think Valve intentionally does not want to make other super rare skins. Because they don't benefit from skins sales outside the steam market. What they want for skins is just for people to use, not collect. This also reflects on the recent skin renting feature.

I don't think they care so I don't think they intentionally do or not do anything with super rare skins. Sure, they want their market to have high traffic, but they don't care how that happens. They're also less interested in running and regulating a volatile, speculative marketplace, hence why there's a limit on the listing price on Steam Marketplace. If they wanted to have that much control over skin trading, they would've never allowed usage of their API for those purposes. As for the skin renting feature, it seems more like an alternative method for people who rent skins to get their rentals more securely and for more people to be able to enjoy skins. If anything, this would tank their profits from case openings (since you can only rent once every week and you can't keep them) but it could help the player. Though, most likely, it's just a gimmick Valve cooked up to deter the recent gambling drama.

That's a misconception, Valve to benefit because people open cases knowing that they can sell the valuable skins. Heyzeus can only justify doing his case openings where Valve makes thousands because he can sell the rare and valuable skins.
