This Singapore brand fights fashion waste by upcycling kimonos & unwanted fabrics

Mind blowing stat: it’s estimated that the fashion industry produces between 80 and 100 billion new clothing garments each year. According to ThredUp, we’re producing over 92 million tons of textile waste in the same amount of time. In Singapore, over 254,000 tonnes of textile waste was created in 2023, but only 2% of it was recycled!
That’s a lot of stuff we’ve grown tired of, and a lot of stuff that could have been recirculated to new homes.
Putting a unique spin on tackling this issue is Syne, a label salvaging, rescuing and reworking unwanted fabrics and giving them a new (and stylish!) lease of life.
Syne began their journey upcycling kimonos sourced from Japan, reworking these traditional pieces and giving them a contemporary spin through modern styling. Today, beyond kimonos, the brand also seeks out other surplus or unwanted materials within the local fashion industry to create their upcycled garments and accessories.
Discover the journey of co-founders Ian Sam and Eshton Chua-who previously worked within the fast fashion industry before coming together to find a creative way to fight textile waste!
