I think it's because if you do a straight cut on the tip it will have a natural curve and leave the silicon with a better consistent finish as apposed to having bulges running it back the normal way. When running the normal way you cut the tip at an angle which this video shows after tip 2. Tip 2 can cause you to judder on wood or rough surfaces, he used this method on smooth tiles which wouldn't judder and provides a better finish with a straight cut tip being used. Hope this answered your question 👍🏻

First of all the reason you get uneven bead is you’re using the cheapest caulk gun you can buy. Secondly only putting down dotted lines to make a smooth bead is wrong because when you do that you create air bubbles which will make the silicone fail faster. How do I know? I’m a professional caulker with 30+ years experience. I’ve waterproofed the outside of high rise buildings that are still sealed after 20 years.

@@emrecenkers9721 the reason why urethane always fails is the center of the bead has a stronger adhesion in the center and the edges pull away. After cleaning the substrate lay a tiny bead of silicone into the corner. Let dry then run a bigger bead over top of the silicone. Remember to be very neat because the urethane will not adhere to the silicone therefore the edges are stronger than the center. It’s called a bond breaker.

I don't understand how to caulk and have a beautiful clean rounded seal. What am I doing wrong? Is the caulk gun I bought from Walmart garbo? Am I releasing too much? Am I going to slow? Do I cut the tip in a specific way? I'm pretty handy, but for some odd reason there are little skills like this that I have trouble with lol

Example one is always....squeeze out WAY too much caulk and two is squeeze out about the right amount. YEP...works better every time putting down the right amount and straight. But the REAL Key to Caulking - from one whose done Marble Tubs/Surrounds and Home painting/building for years...is of course to choose the right size cut on the nozzle, squeeze out the right amount as you move the caulk gun along first, but then....MOST IMPORTANT ---- Use a rag and the right solvent and keep your finger clean as you press the bead home into the joint and clean up any excess - FROM your FINGER. For Latex Caulk, all you need is a H2O/Damp Rag to wipe your finger on as you run you a finger over the caulk. Keeping ur finger clear of any excess caulk allows you to press in and clean up the caulk perfectly every time. But wipe 10-15 inches, then clean your finger as it builds up, then wipe another section and clean the finger again...repeating until done. Any Excess - if it happens, can be wiped up with the clean end of the rag to ensure you have Zero over smear (if that happens at all which it won't if u get 1st part half way right and don't put on WAY too much like in this video). For Silicone Caulk, replace the H2O damp rag with Acetone and also use a spray bottle of Acetone. Use an acetone damped rag in one hand like described above, but in addition before you wipe with finger you also spray a light mist over the bead/work before you Run your finger down across the bead. It keeps the Silicone from sticking to area outside your bead and keeps your Finger clean as you wipe small sections, as you wipe rag to keep finger clean of excess. So Wipe/Clean Finger then Wipe/Clean Finger as you caulk with both Silicone and Latex and you get Perfect Beads every time. It is all about using the right solvent and a rag handy as u push the bead in to ensure it stays perfectly clean

Pushing the caulk gun tip forward is generally a terrible idea, but caulking two perfectly smooth solid slabs without any joint is the most controlled scenario and it turned out alright. I'll definitely try it next time! However it doesn't help for most real world applications. Cutting the tip properly and coordinating the movement of the gun with the flow of caulk is the best way to ensure a good product. Nice video

When you pull the caulk it spans the joint and then you have to tool the caulk to force it into the joint. When you push the caulk you force it into the joint and leave a little excess on top. If it were possible the best caulking job would fill the gap with no leftover exposed caulk.

  • @jnicemiz

    @jnicemiz

    Жыл бұрын

@@donbrownist Not true. You can get the joint filled when pulling the caulk just fine. Proper hole side, proper tip cut angle, proper application angle, speed, etc will give a bead that requires little to no tooling, and a higher quality bead than pushing the caulk. Of course, any truly professional quality joint will require tooling anyway unless it's an exterior caulking that specifically states not to tool.

Im not saying amy of these are bad tips and the last ones i use myself gotta plug the caulk and hooks are my go to or screws but over all i do like this video just need a little more for people who are watching this for home use

I don't see where anything was "made" to look wrong. I did see someone taking the time to address beginner problems with solutions that may help those that don't have "talent" but at least have some interest in becoming better at something that does take a little time acquiring the coordination and skill to lay down a bead of caulk that bridges the legs of both joints. Real talent does quality work with least amount of effort and material waste. The "proper way" is all perspective cause anything can be made to look good on the outside, yet covering the mistakes made on the inside. How many walls, windows, doors, showers, are replaced because a 35 year talented professional didn't lay a bead of caulk properly by code? Or better yet didn't use the correct type for the application. Come on now, instead of being negative why not add some positive feedback to the person trying making an effort to help others become more confident working with sealants. Have a good day and be safe out there.

The reason some things are done the way they are is maybe not because it's the "right way" but it's the necessary way of laying down a sufficient bead of caulk and getting the most longevity out of the application. Most videos like this solve little problems and muddy the waters with people who think they know how to do something but have no clue.

Which is the point of the lighter trick too, but if no flamage is to be had, then you can still fall back to no 2. Especially if someone else cut the tip because that’s the way they’ve always done it!!! Would have saved me a lot of rework

Why would anyone cut the caulk tip straight anyways? I've been a remodeler most of my adult life and I always cut them at a 45 and you can both pull and push without any problems at all if you know how to run a caulk gun .

How big you cut the tip and the rate at which you caulk = whether you waste caulk or not👍

Some of this I do agree with depending on what you are caulking , where. How, and what you are caulking. But let me tell you that I have over 45 years EXPERIENCE caulking EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE. if a person doesn't use there finger to go over the caulk after they have applied it. Take away the caulking gun from them. I literally caulk something at some point almost every day.

Metal hooks/screw may corrode (especially with water based), leaving you to deal with brown or flecked caulk for a while, or eventually ruin your tip. Tape or cling wrap is good for air tight. Or 3D print a cap.

Zaman zaman çokça her alanda paylaşımları ilgiyle izliyoruz.

I installed custom counter tops for over 15 yrs. When you silicon in your back splash. Cut the tip at a 45 angle. Then run your line. Wet the tip of your finger, run it down the clear silicon. Ever inch or so. Wipe it off with a damp papertowl. Repeat.

It is very helpful to have perfectly smooth surfaces like shown in the video, but it's not very realistic most of the time. I'm not sure how well some of these methods would work in the real world, like on a trim piece up against the textured wall of an old home.
