    Retail worker here, they literally train you to not stop shoplifters out of fear for your own safety. People steal things every day, but it’s all factored into the companies profit margins and they can afford it 1000 times over.

  • @Meladjusted

    @Meladjusted

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thing is, I have no idea why you'd _want_ to try to stop someone. Why would you fight over a dumb product for a company paying you minimum wage? You get nothing from the sale of that product. I've never understood that... Just call the manager about it when it's safe to. That's the extent of my involvement, if I do anything at all (I've seen customers I knew were really poor and on assistance steal food and just left it; working in grocery can be sad). But that's about as much as retail pay covers, regardless of rules. Want me to care a bit more? _Maybe_ pay me human wages I can live on, for a start. I still don't see stealing from corporations as this thing to really give a shit about though. It hurts managers in retail, who really don't make a lot of money (especially if they have a family and/or live in a RTW state), because the company blames them fully for it when loss is added up during inventory and punishes them both monetarily and with huge pressure, acting like they can absolutely control it somehow, and that's how the company controls the whole situation and makes it into a moral issue basically. If you steal, you're fucking over this manager and any assistant managers at the store because we'll flog them for it. Because otherwise, the only losers would be a multi-million/multi-billion dollar company and multi-millionaires at the top who just want wider and wider profit margins. And actually, I'd love to negatively affect that, thanks. If the companies care so much about loss, they should hire security by default, but they usually don't. So... Shut up? No, they'd rather drive people into an early grave over expectations. It's easier and doesn't cut into profits. They can always replace a stroke or massive heart attack victim. I feel like it's fresh-faced, idealistic teens or those in their very early 20s, who still have this idea that their job is actually trying to be fair with them (because of those hilarious corporate videos they make you watch at meetings) or at least just sees them as this other parental-type authority, like school, who usually get involved in such situations of valiantly going after shoplifters.

    @@Meladjusted honestly, I could totally see an employee, especially a younger one who is still new to the work force, thinking they need to intervene even if the company explicitly tells them not to. I’ve worked at chain stores before that would show OSHA videos as part of their training only to have a manager indirectly ask me to do something that is against OSHA regulations because we were in a hurry. When I was younger I did it because I didn’t want to lose my job and figured this is just the way it goes. So if a teen or 20-something who doesn’t know any better witnesses a theft on the job, I could totally see them questioning whether the no-chase policy is legit or if management is going to find a reason to fire them the next day should they not act.

    Have these kids never worked at a retail store in their life? Its like one of the first things you are taught is don't be a hero over some stupid stuff that doesn't matter. And yes this applies to private security as well. Most of the time private security is a separate entity from the store they are "protecting". If nobody's life is on the line they are taught to gather evidence and provide it to police rather than intervene because doing so can escalate the situation and get someone killed. Then the company that provides the security would be liable for what happened. The security guard is only supposed to act when someone's life is in danger and even then it can get questionable.

    Let me preface this by saying: Outside of work, I don't give a fuck about stealing. That said, I work on the stores end tracking Organized retail crime Lvl 1s are people stealing for personal use. Usually down on their luck on homeless and cause such an insignificant amount of loss that we often don't pay attention to it Lvl 2s are people stealing for resail. Usually swapmeets or on the street. Their usually like the 1s demographic with teens mixed in. These Usually include a couple thousand $ of lost merch, but happen infrequently and just get tracked to where they're selling by a different team(which is why employees even though they are not told this, is why they're told to leave it alone if they see it as an fyi) Lvl 3s Steal in groups of 3-5. A lot of the time they're armed and instead of hitting one or two stores every now and then, they'll hit an entire district worth of stores in a day and are known to go across state lines to continue boosting from store chains. As the volume they hit is usually high, at times their activity is enough to actually blow past a shrink budget. For reference, where I work the budget is only 25k. With the addition of operational error and Warehouse errors, most stores in a given district don't meet that budget. The recourse of missing a shrink budget is a store losing hours, non union stores getting pay cuts, the warehouse stops sending certain brands and products, and product protection devices get installed in every problem area(and is driven by monthly analytics that generate based off of what you lose consistently). These companies are garbage. I agree. They don't treat their employees right. I agree. They're completely unconcerned with employee safety. Agreed. But the people in your chat weren't defending the company or bootlicking. The people who work there very easily get their incomes and livelihoods wrecked because of shrink. I don't believe you should dismiss them and their concerns that easily. They're getting screwed like the rest of us.

    Being from Atlanta and not being white, I was really pissed about the lack of context being given (especially about how the "riots" caused the crime rate to go up?!) but also how he misused used the zoning of the city itself to push the narrative of race being a reason that crime has increased. Especially since the poorer parts of the city were hit hardest by the pandemic which of course would lead to a large increase in crimes of need. Plus Lenox is a nice ass mall so that shit he said about how it "used to be one of the better malls" threw me tf off. Every social area gets shot up and friends that work there tell me how fucked up that it happens so regularly. The dated "black person shoots innocent white person" bs narrative really doesn't stick when the spa was literally the site of a major shooting a few months back. I live among people who definitely come to strange conclusions about local crime based on weird “evidence”, with no idea how the local laws and local government actually work. My neighborhood just had a meeting with a city council rep and our district’s public response team of police officers, specifically to address a few businesses on the edge of the neighborhood that apparently have been having constant noise violations, prostitution, and shootings for YEARS. At one point a guy spoke up and actually tried to blame “the Defund the Police shit” on the time it’s taking to get resolved, even after the unit had already explained that, while they have been working hard on it, 1) new similar businesses just keep replacing the ones they successfully get evicted 2) the budget hasn’t changed majorly since 2011 but they just don’t have the tools or personnel or frankly the legal power to do some of the stuff being expected and demanded of them 3) that successfully and *legally* shutting down a law-breaking business takes TIME and 4) they’ve begun a specific new legal proceeding against the landlord now so they’re going after the root of the problem *of that particular shopping center* (to be clear, not the root of all crime anywhere) for the sake of our neighborhood. It was like he hasn’t been listening at all, just wanted to keep thinking what he had already decided. I wanted to challenge him and be like, “what, you think the City has *already* started ‘Defunding the Police’ to the point where you think ‘crime has risen because of it’!? Did you notice what else has been happening for the past 18 months? Did you know crime statistically goes up in the late spring and summer? Do you know how progressive change works? Do you know what the policy proposals surrounding Defund the Police actually are? *Do you even care* or do you just want to get to bitch about ‘crime’?” It’s a bad slogan but people are so lazy and reactionary they get all self-righteously upset but don’t look at what’s being proposed. I was so annoyed. My neighborhood is already dumb enough that Nextdoor is just flooded with people being upset that a black man walked past their house “probably casing the place”. (Nextdoor is so toxic.) I just really needed to rant.

    I'd barely call that security at that point though. You're just there to tell someone else to call the police or tell the regional manager. In neighborhoods where it's enough of an issue, they'll just lock items up until you get a random employee to unlock the item for you. Shaving razors are a common one, but of course it's not a problem if you're a cashier level employee. Just let the manager have those conversations and go on about your business.

    @@simonblackwell3576 lmaooo for me I'm a security guard in toronto. Im politically neutral but would never stop anyone from stealing from those big store companies. My reasoning for not doing anything is because of the following: 1. Any big company or corporation isn't your friend. I have no reason to be loyal in any real capacity because they would not hesitate to throw me under the bus, berate or fire me over petty reasons. While they make millions, we're literally seen as trash in their eyes. Even if they don't explicitly say it. That's the over culture and sentiment. We're closer socially and economically to that poor person who needs to rob the store than anyone of those big corp mofo's. 2. I figure if someone is stealing essentials its because they fucking need it. So I have to put my moral principles first tbh. Why should these companies continue to upsell and profit, underpay everyone, while many people continue to struggle by a large degree in our society. Honestly, it has nothing to do with risking my life for x amount of monetary value. For me, I would risk my life for the correct cause even if I was paid nothing. For example, if someone was assaulting an old lady I wouldn't say "Hey I'm not paid enough for this" We should try to do the right thing regardless of the economic or social rewards. That's my opinion

He acts like only the opinions of the white majority matter, says it blatantly, all while defending his point with "I have black friends on my podcast" because he knows it's bullshit designed to trigger liberals rather than being a real point. It's kinda depressing when people like you defend someone actively trying to turn the poor into modern slaves. They say that you should pay more for college and that women shouldn't have the option to get an abortion in a life-threatening pregnancy, yet you act like that's the best thing in America because the Pillsbury Doughboy with a gun holster said so. You can't be serious with this. Why believe someone who says "don't blame men for sexual assault, the women are whores and temptresses." Isn't that demeaning? What happened to the conservative ideal of personal responsibility? You absolutely were NOT to physically stop a customer or thief from anything. Theres a margin of about 1% factored into budgets for "shrink" and the cost of the lost merchandise is much lower than a potential lawsuit for not only the associates possible injury, but also the suspect. Here’s some insight, I’ve worked as a loss Prevention supervisor in SF Union Square for the last two years. Firstly, Walgreens is a joke, they’ve run on the honor system for years but it’s spiking due to COVID. Secondly, if anybody thinks shoplifting in SF is a primarily black thing, they’re ignorant and racist. If I flip through all the apprehension stats of my store for the last five years, it’s Asians (by far), whites and then Hispanics. In that order. The cops harass black people in the area right off of Bart but those groups operate known ORC rings in broad daylight. Call it anecdotal if you want to but I live in it everyday and the same trend happens all over the Bay Area to be honest
