This Royal Navy Ship Turned Luxury $54m Explorer Superyacht Has A Range Of 20,000nm!
I had the privilege of spending five years at sea after joining the Royal Navy at 16.
And even though I retired from the armed forces several years ago, I, like many other maritime veterans, still feel very much attached to the navy.
When one of my subscribers commented on one of my videos about an explorer superyacht that I had never heard of before, I thought I would check it out.
Suffice to say, when I found this yacht on Edmiston's website, I was not disappointed.
And then when I read that Bleu de Nimes used to be a Royal Navy Degaussing ship, I just knew that I had to make a video about this old friend.

HI this is a former R.M.A.S. vessel either Magnet or Lodestone. As I worked on both I am glad at least one was not scrapped.
I also like to see the crew areas; galley, engine room, crew quarters and mess, plus the bridge! I always get excited by those areas since working at sea so many years ago. Beautiful ship, worthy of another life!!!
I love these converted military ships to explorer yacht, it just makes sense that the ship is still doing what it’s meant to do. And they look awsome doing it.
Using former Navy vessels as private yachts is an outstanding idea. Kudos to the engineers who are responsible for making this happen!😎👍

By far the most beautiful yacht interior I ´ve ever seen and i`ve seen thousands !! Supreme european fine taste throughout ,and top yacht design a long distance fm the horrendous oligarcs gin palaces that clutter the worlds marinas !!

Now this is a ship anyone can love, much better than the candy ass yachts being built today.
Now, that's a serious cruising, yacht and I think it's amazing what they've done with it.
Military vessels intended for blue water operations always have incredibly long ranges compared to civilian ones. If I was ever fotunate enough to have the money for a vessel of this size that I intended to cruise the world with, I'd try and refit a pre-owned Naval hull such as this or try to requisition a hull from a comparable shipwright for that reason - the endurance is just unparalleled.
@normanboyes4983

Sorry that is just not true. Most blue water naval vessels do not have greater range than civilian vessels. Ship Design is a compromise and fuel competes in that process and in a warship there is a lot of competition for space. When you bear in mind it would be rare for a warship not to refuel from a tanker fairly regularly - even a nuclear powered carrier only has sufficient aviation fuel for a few days air ops.

@@normanboyes4983 YES you are Right, but a Nuclear Carrier has how many-sided crew, just the Air wing alone is huge. That flies them off to the land base as the carriers comes in for work. The refueling is mostly for the Jets. But just think of the food a carrier needs. YES there are resupply ships for world Navy's that just sail as at Sea resupply. There is not the need for that on this Navy convention. Some of these type electronic special type Navy vessels were outfitted with fuel supply to stay on station for extended times plus they did not have the crew on board as a carrier. Remember what the video guy said a happy crew is a hard working crew. You must always resupply food on bigger more manned Navy ships. Just saying can't compare a carrier to this type of Navy convention vessel.
Another bucket list travel. Miami to Bermuda to Newfoundland to Greenland to Iceland to Faroe to Bergen to Copenhagen to Helsinki.
I's be happy for our serving seamen / women to have those sort of facilities as standard.
As an old merchant navy sailor it brought back memories of my youth thank you.

It is beautiful. The one thing you did NOT explain (I know, but most do not) is exactly what function a De-Gaussing vessel performs for the navy.
Ah well, now that's a nice interior. Absolutely beautiful, with as much taste as anyone could need. Some people can design interiors for boat's and some can't, this team is near perfect in my opinion. A stunning vessel.

Wow, envious.
I like the forward well deck, which is remeniscent of classic liners of the 20th century. It is also the perfect place to hide your tenders, presenting clean lines and a very photogenic exterior. This yacht is 100% more practical & classy than the purpose built gin palaces, all bulges & LED strip lights, that spend most of their life moored up in the Mediterranian.

One can only hope that with modern technology, such conversions have the requisite sea kindly abilities necessary for today's market..? I am reminded of stories of a much older conversion, Onassis's legendary yet also infamous yacht "Christina". For nearly three decades "Christina" was the "go to " yacht for the "Jet set, hosting guests such as Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, Opera Diva Maria Callas(Onassis's long term mistress), Winston Churchill, the Taylor-Burtons and of course Jackie Kennedy. But notoriously "Christina" was not a sea kindly boat and despite Onassis having lavished about 100 million U$ on her (in today's terms) he could not correct the fault, apparently in anything more than a 1-2mt. swell she would begin to pitch, yaw and roll alarmingly. Because Onassis obviously wished to spare his guests any discomfort, this was one of the reasons that the yacht was often seen in less glamorous ports than might be expected of such a vessel.

I think a Frigate would be a bit too big as a yacht. Also, most are gas turbine powered and would require to be re-engined for economy. Patrol vessels are a more economic size for yacht conversion, and there are plenty to choose from.

This to me is the ULTIMATE in super yachts! If I could afford a super yacht THIS would be it! The interior is amazing, and the decks are well equipped to enjoy your time out on the open ocean. And the range...does anyone beat the range of this vessel? I would love to build an adventure cruise around the world in a vessel like this and invite as many guests as I could comfortably fill it with. Love it!

The refit is astonishing. She really is very impressive! That range though is unbelievable, true explorer range. I’m very curious to hear how she achieves that range. The closest yacht to rival that range, from my memory, is only Octopus at 12,000 nautical miles and she is almost twice the length of blue de nimes.

Best yacht ever
Bleu de Nimes has for some time been my dream yacht, had I won Euromillions Superdraw. Sadly I did not..!! LOL I like the fact that her heritage has given her not only a somewhat more conservative yet unique appearance compared to other production yachts, but also outstanding range and the apparent ability to handle the most extreme conditions. Is there any clue as to whether or not she has Ice class capabilities...? I admit that whilst personally her interiors are not to my taste her versatility and abilities more than outweigh any negatives. With the number of guest cabins, she is obviously aimed at the Charter market, which would not be my prime objective, but this too can be changed with an interior refit. In Blue de Nimes, I believe a potential owner will have a vessel equally elegantly at home gracing harbours from Cannes to Cape Town, yet with true Global Cruising capability, able to reach far-flung destinations...

@peterlbaldwin511

@@YachtBuoy Thanks for clarification .Pity she is not "Ice" classed however there are now ways of achieving limited Ice class verification without extended additional steel plating being needed.. As an aside apparently during the rebuild and Hull extension, a bulbous bow was added which has not only improved her sea keeping abilities, but has also improved fuel consumption. 220 lts., per hour at 12 knots for a vessel of this size is remarkable. I understand that her fuel tankage capacity is 320,000 gallons (Imp)or +/- 1,600,000 ltrs...!

About ten years ago I remember seeing another former Royal Navy survey ship that had been converted to a luxury motor yacht. It was berthed in Monaco, and was formerly HMS Bulldog or one of her sister ships, all decommisioned in the early to mid 1990s.

I guess this is why I'll never have this kind of money. I just don't get an "expedition" ship without a machine shop, electrical shop, laboratory spaces, foul weather space with all the junk you put on and take off in SS6 weather. Wood is nice, luxury is okay, but I want something that wears well and requires less maintenance, not more. When I am 2400 nm from the nearest port and something breaks, I want to be able to make a new one and install it. I also want specs on how the habitable spaces in the ship can withstand -50 degree or +50 degree weather and keep a constant 20 degrees and 50 percent humidity. It'd also be nice to have a craft that cruises at better than 9 knots at 1 gallon per nm. I also want medical facilities and sufficient goods storage to allow for extended travel away from sources of supply. Who gives a flying f about beautiful appointments when the water maker goes south because of a broken valve and all you have is an elegantly appointed galley to try and fix what's wrong?
Nice

It's my understanding that it costs fuel to carry fuel. So having a spectacular range is one thing and taking advantage in another. Seriously though, if I had an exploration yacht, I expect, I would follow the coastline of every continent, going up rivers and visiting every interesting port for a day or maybe a week. Funny thing, I'm always looking for a humidor, or where I would put one.

If i could afford to buy her, and operate her with crew, i would love to own her. With that kind of fuel capacity I would only need to refuel her every 10 years or so. This is amazing. Thank you.

I find the lines of these converted Navy vessels appealing , maybe because they were commissioned for a purpose. They can be beautiful when converted. They also seem to have more room, be spacious in a way that ordinary built yachts cannot. Big yachts seem to waste space, where conversions seem to have had a prior purpose for their large spaces and so they don't seem contrived.

I bet the men amd women that worked on her wish they could go back onto her now. I could live there. Ryobovich Shipyards and CBM are joining Icon in taking old vessels used for military and commercial purposes and turning them into explorer vessels. I personally would like the look of a military vessel like Skat, Bold, Mizu or Khailala(sp). Just on the off chance you ran into some pirates near the Gulf of Aden or south America, it would make them think twice about coming after you. Of course taking on temporary armed security while transition is also another idea for the Gulf, but some yacht people may not like the rough looking men with Barrett .50 BMG sniper rifles and H&K G3 and DD18's roaming all over the teak looking to smoke check some skinnies.
