600ft 183m Expedition Yacht REV is largest in the World, AND it has a mission!

Ойын-сауық

Paul Madden talks about REV with designer Espen Øino, who was also the designer of Paul Allen's 414' OCTOPUS.
REV Ocean is a research and expedition vessel (REV) and super yacht built by VARD shipyards in Tulcea, Romania. She was designed by Espen Øino with an interior by H2 Yacht Design, and was initially launched on 22 August 2019. She will be fitted out at other VARD shipyards and is scheduled to be delivered in 2021.
Boats & landing craft carried: 2 trawlers, 1 submersible.
Owner: Kjell Inge Røkke
Cost: US$350-500 million
REV website: www.revocean.org/
Octopus is a 126.20m (414.04ft) motor yacht, custom built in 2003 and last refitted in 2008.
One of the largest and most spectacular examples of a full-fledged yachting and exploration vessel, 126-meter Octopus is equipped with highly sophisticated technology.
Espen Øino International designed the striking exterior with a blue and white hull and superstructure, featuring two helipads and a hangar aft.
The superyacht is capable of exploration and scientific research voyages requiring months at sea. One of her key features is an integrated dock for both the principal 20-meter guest tender and two submarines for exploring marine life, one of which is remotely controlled for reaching greater depths.
Octopus also houses a professional music studio and a grandiose cinema, created by interior designer Jonathan Quinn Barnett.
With a permanent berth in the International Yacht Club Marina in Antibes, this giant is owned by Microsoft Co-Founder Paul Allen. With a full-time crew of 60 including former Navy Seals, maintenance and salaries on the ship cost a rumoured $200 million. Octopus is well-known for hosting famous faces onboard its well-equipped decks, serviced only by world leaders in their fields.

Yeah I know right? I’m sure they rent this vessel out to scientists but also regular vacationers. It’s kind of smart actually it opens up your market a lot broader. I would totally want to go on a ship like this more than a regular yacht if I had the choice of renting either!

I'm glad some of these ships are still made here in Norway. By the way, "rev" means "fox" in Norwegian. So maybe it's an Arctic Fox ? 😉 Great looking vessel ! To me the Lürssen yacht resembles a white pyramide with balconies. On top of a chef's knife....😱 Not my cup of tea ! 🤣

It has been said that, the modern really large Superyachts are in fact the lavish "Country Estates" complete with massive mansions. They are show-pieces, designed not so much as homes, or in the case of large motoryachts, purely receational vessels, no their primary function is, to IMPRESS, just as were the mansions of centuries past. In years gone by the difficulty of travel, especially for the lower classes, kept such country estates largely private, restricted to only invited guests, or staff employed. Fast forward to the 20/21st century and those same restricitons are now enforced by " security personnel", of course there is also the actual possible, threat to the welfare of those on board. There are exceptions of course in those vessels designed with more actual purpose, such as assisting with scientific research such as was the case with the legendary "Octopus" and now with "R.E.V.", it seems... Still for most, we can only marvel at such modern creations....

If that long point sticking off the front of it is part of its length, I don't think it should count. and I would say AZZAM should still be the longest in the world. If adding what looks like a 20+ foot point sticking off the front of a yacht is all you have to do to make it longer, then the owner of AZZAM should add a 25-foot point to the front so AZZAM will be the longest once again. It's kinda like stuffing a sock in your pants and pointing to it saying look what I've got, But once someone gets in your pants and sees it's just a sock, they're just going to walk away laughing at you.

If you're going to have a proper ship, don't go to a dedicated MY yard. They just see $$$$ and everything they do is 100% more expensive than a commercial yard. Identify a commercial ship that matches your overall size/capability requirements and say "I want one of those, with the following modifications..." Get the "luxury" fit-out done by another company, again, not a well-known MY fit-out mob, because they also just see $$$$$. It will save you possibly tens of millions. Another very important consideration is commercial ships have the latest technology: they often come with DP2 as standard, for example, and are designed to have heavy lift cranes.

How the phrase “climate change” can be used in conjunction with a vessel consuming so many resources and so much diesel fuel is laughable. All for the service of one person. Using electric, as a secondary source, and having it available for researchers, is just tax avoidance and ego appeasement, for an owner, who can helicopter in and out, basking in his contribution to society.
