It’s a flicker fusion. It’s known with Critical flicker fusion frequency (CFFF) EEG reflects a range of complex brain activities, therefore CFFF, which appears to correlate with EEG, might usefully reflect changes in brain performance (Berka et al., 2007). This kind of correlation has been recently further proposed among a world class chess player (Fuentes et al., 2018). In this study evaluation of cortical arousal by both CFFF and EEG by the theta Fz/alpha Pz ratio revealed a parallel increase of CFFF fusion threshold and theta Fz/alpha Pz ratio. The results of another recent study also suggested that CFFF and attentional performance are related with a tight relation between the CFFF and occipital gamma band activity both in frequency and power (Kahlbrock et al., 2012).

Dr. Cody, great video and thanks for sharing. I tried Lucia light a few years ago and it definitely altered my state of consciousness in a good way for many hours after a 5 minute session. I have tried iphone apps by they are not as intense as these systems. Of course they are all unaffordable: Lucia light, Roxiva, Pandora Star, etc. - Liba light is probably the most affordable option at 600 pounds. It is interesting that there are so many companies but none of them are based out of the United States. I wonder if it is because these devices require FDA approval in US.

  • @ooohgooo

Just found this video after discussing our light stimulation prototype with researchers (is KZread also listening to my conversations?))), very nice! Very important question - have you actually tried it with fNIRS and it didn't work, or you just assumed it wouldn't work and didn't try? OpenBCI GUI can plot spectrograms (breakdowns into specific bands is arbitrary anyway), and you can select specific channels for averaging at the top spectrogram and others at the bottom (like some channels for averaging everything on the front and the bottom for averaging everything at the back). And you can select linear or logarithmic scale. You should then expect to see your alpha-smear disappear and some red lines appear in slightly higher region. You would also be able to tell from the spectrogram if what you see is a clean artefact generated from rapidly changing EM fields, or a gradual/fluctuating/smeared biological change (you can't necessarily pick it up when you break it down into bands). Hope this is helpful.

We have a small group of people who are doing brain entrainment experiments. We had a similar LED device from Taiwan. I want to record my EEG while I'm using it. But I'm not able to wear it and Muse simultaneously because it's goggle-like. Crown is a good option, but the official java interface doesn't generate brainwave charts like mind monitor.
