I am prob alone in saying I don’t mind the commercials. I’m so pin obsessed, I love watching anything pinball. 😂
I’ve got 6 sterns in my game room…. Cary perfectly summed up my feelings. This advertising on my $10k machines is ridiculous

I only have 4 Sterns. I'm still not happy about it.
Thank you for showing us how to turn this crap off. Disney Executives know how to run a company, .....they know how to run it right into the ground
The Christmas Story edit was perfect LOL
Stern should've added pro pinball tips and pro gameplay of those pins by elwin. Strange those clips showing actors faking enjoying pinball.
Good video, to answer the question about the commercial, I am a stern dealer. I am going to tell you that 90% of my sales go to homes. 10% go to routes. I do like that they least can have you turn it off.
Disney has entered the room

Lol yeah they'll follow in Disneys footsteps and have a bunch of LGBTQ women in there ads 😂
Stern unless you want to pay me for the advertising space, I do NOT want these ads playing on my games out on location basically showing off other games to my customers they can't play at my location. All of my games will have now auto updated to the new code containing these ads today and I'll need to travel to each location to turn them off. Thanks for that Stern, where can I send you the invoice for the time it will take for me to do this!
You had me at “A Christmas Story”!
Knew it was a bad sign having someone being from Disney running the company
2:56 Puppy Cameo
My only concern about the trojan horsing of this type of stuff is that.. They're obviously going the way of EA and video game companies, just you wait until your pin NEEDS to be online or you can't play it. Sure it starts out with some harmless ad-ware and some DLC but before you know it they force you to stay logged in with an internet connection or you can't even play the games.
“How to install an Ad Blocker for your Stern” by Cary Hardy
As long as we are able to turn the ads off, I don't mind. Even arcades have that option. One thing I am for is spreading the word that pinball is back any way we can. I don't know how much of an effect this will have, but every little bit helps, I guess. I do want to say thank-you for sending out this little video. If these ads had started showing up on my Godzilla (it hasn't yet) without me knowing how to turn them off I might assume I couldn't turn them off. I would be fucken pissed and would be on the phone with Stern that day giving someone at customer support an ear full. So glad I did not have to do that.

Pinball has been back since 2014... even before that with metallica, woz and acdc breaking the dry spell. There is no real need for this but there is a definite need to reduce these ludicrous prices and cost cutting crap these companies keep doing. .

@@johneldridge1345 Sure, for this eclectic group of people they do, but not for most out there. All I know is that 2 months ago I had no idea pinball machines were even made anymore. I hadn't thought about them in 20 years. I'm glad I stumbled into that random bar when I did, but if I hadn't, I would be completely unaware they exist.

I disabled this immediately on my Rush. Also while in there I turned off the mode and multi instructional segments. Now it's a clean scores only collage perfect for HUO without all the on location instructions and commercials. Thanks to Stern for making this optional... For now? 🤞
This is all Seth Davis former Disney executive BS that we should continue to expect from Stern. He was hired for a reason and it's not his love for Pinball.
I get what you are saying. It is the trend that we need to be aware of and speak up about. Just like dealers taking full payment for games months to a year out, its a trend we dont want to encourage. I'd prefer them to put the time into releasing home leaderboards
No matter how bad my day is, Carey uplifts me with his content. Thank you brother!
So, this brings in a lot of assumptions on Stern’s part: that arcades are actively updating code (granted, they are so much better than they used to be, overall) and that home use only owners know how to update their code. The level of Disney boneheadedness is supreme with this one.
It's funny i actually like the commercials it's cool to see all the clips from other pins.
Thank you for this video!
They need an opt out when upgrading code (or an ability to turn it off from jump street) if this is in there. I get they’re throwing ads out for other games and such but still, don’t want to hear this all the time by default.
Golden Tee had a better online integration with the youtube "shot of the week" clips. Something like that but for pinball would have smoothed this over a good bit.
Got to keep supporting CH Best presentation ever, learn something new in a fun way! Keep posting

in between each ball? lol
It will be interesting to see if the adverts actually work. I would think the casual pinball player is pretty unlikely to pay 10K to have a machine in their own home, but who knows?
Before seeing this video, I was encouraged to see the 0.99 update for my Foo Fighters LE today. Less so, now. On a side note, it was funny to see the dog in my sight lines on camera two.
I Remember how you talked of the Stern Trojan horse when insider connected was revealed. Yep 👍 this is what he was talking about people.
Time to remove the WiFi dongle on my I/C machines. There isn’t much use for it on home pins as scores are only legit at locations. As fun as is it is to track achievements, It’s not so special that I’ll allow them to have their fingers constantly in my machines.
I also noticed this update on my Deadpool that the extra ball is 30 weapons instead of 10. I’m sure it’s a setting to find but my wife wasn’t happy about it xD
Just to mention: data east machies were also advertised other machines, like I found the lethal weapon 3 and tales from the crypt scenes in the Hook pinball machine. :) But there were very limited options to do it in a very small system firmware, but they did! Now this time it looks a bit larger.
Another great vid. No comment on the vid though- just letting you know your puppy got out of his pen at the end of the video- lol
As an operator in Canada, 1st price of Sterns are overpriced. 2nd we pay 40% more per piece. 3rd they want us to now be thier free billboard to advertise thier products, while suggesting our clients to buy thier own pinball machine for thier home or business. 4th this will cause stress on the operator when the location starts seeing the other titles available and starts making a wishlist. Not impressed or amused Stern!
People out here acting like Stern... a FOR PROFIT COMPANY... is evil for trying to increase profits through marketing. Good on them for letting us disable it. I don't really care, I don't sit and stare at the attract modes. I love your content Cary...It's ironic you're not wearing your Gfuel shirt today =P

I am completely unbothered by the ad. On the other hand, if I ever have to watch Progressive Flo on a Stern, I'm quitting pinball forever.
Im glad we can turn it off. I dont need my buddies to know they can buy machines for their house... if that happens they wont keep coming to my house with their quarters! No such thing as a free play either
I have 1 machine(Godzilla) that is currently connected to the internet and I only recently purchased it second hand. Glad I updated the code a few weeks ago when I got it home and didn't put it off until now. My other machines are older and I was considering putting IC on them and now seeing the temperature being raised and what may come in the future, fuck that! Also even happier that Pulp Fiction doesn't have a screen of any description as I wait and wait and wait for it to turn up.
It would be cool if there was a Jaws promo hidden in there!
I don't own a stern, would like one, but if this is the path they are going down, I might pass.
I don't know man, I don't think this will effect pinball locations at all. Most casuals will see the cost and be like, hellllll naw. Sure there will be a few crazies like all of us that will pull the trigger, but I don't see this having much of an effect on an arcade or Arcade Bar. Just my opinion and I guess the ones concerned about it can just shut it off. Good video though, can we get a picture in picture puppy camera by the way? I was like, what's going on back there, and then you cut away from it. #CaryPuppyCam

Great video, Cary. I'm ok with the ads as long as they can be turned off in the menu settings. Although I do see this potentially slightly harmful to the operators. Then again, is the casual player going to pop for a nib pin?

There is a price bubble going on in pinball. thats for sure. and this sterns move don't help.
As long as it can be turned off. Not a big deal. At least there is not something dumb. Like can't be turned off if free play is not enabled.

Are you serious!? Commercials for my home owned pinball machines? *Mouth drops to the floor*
such back stab to arcades, lol. This is ridiculous. This reminds me of that stunt Apple did about 10 years ago when they pushed a full U2 album into every phone.
Cary, I always put a custom message that says "TODD TUCKEY is the greatest Arcade/Pinball Salesman in the world!" Is that okay??
I just updated our machines and i don’t mind it at this moment.
And just like Windows, it will be re-enabled every time the machine receives an update. And you can turn it off until you can't.
Stern ads now. Next week Pepsi and Amazon commercials. As long as they keep the option to disable i dont mind.
I really don't see a conflict of interest for the arcade owners. Someone who buys a machine for their home has become a pinball fanatic, not a fanatic for that particular game; and pinball fanatics are more inclined to want to go to arcades to check out the latest and greatest. That said, adding ads to a code update feels horribly intrusive. Should've been in a separate patch for arcade operators. "You can disable it", isn't the point. It's like Stern telling people who've bought their machine that when they go to a convention, you HAVE to show up in a Stern Pinball t-shirt... "but you're free to change your shirt once you get inside"
😂 good thing I updated my Godzilla code the other day I’ll pass on this one for sure my Data East Hook advertises lethal weapon three
I keep all my updates separate for just such an occasion!
Won't be long until we start seeing in-game purchases / upgrades.
Bad move on Stern part. Well with the high prices of new and used machines, most will never afford even one machine.
Over the years I've seen these kinds of campaigns before, where manufactures try to solicit to our customers to buy games for the home (in the past usually via marketing for consoles), and I don't let this bother me as it is a free country and they are welcome to do what they want in that respect. In this case what bothers me is that Stern is basically running a commercial on my machines without my permission and without compensation. When Touchtunes runs commercials on my jukeboxes I get a cut, not a very large cut, but there is revenue there and they don't hide my ability to opt out. Stern needs to be more honest about what they are doing.
Hey Cary, have you ever considered providing a pre-owned certified service for pins? Something like a seller having a list of things you want to see pics or video of to gain a "Hardy Certified" status so that buyers are better protected and are aware of the good and not so good of a potential purchase? Sellers then gain the benefit of .making games easier to sell.
All I want is co-op mode!
FWIW some DE games from the early 90s also promoted other titles, doesn't seem like a new thing. I quite like that my old JP (or was it Hook) advertises LAH on the DMD (if you enable it) 🤷♂
It’s a toss up for me as most people I’ve had conversations with don’t have money for machines and just love location play. However the 20 or 30 percent that would consider a game I believe would hurt the arcade sales where I’m trying to attract players and grab some coins. I do get that stern wants new buyers but I see this being a conflict with alot of vendors . With pinball being an expensive hobby at the end of the day it’s hard to say how hard sales would be affected
@imnitguy

Stern knows that - it takes an enormous number of plays to recoup the outlay spent. Collectors (ok speculators) rationalize this away because they are biased and want to own it.

I think you just nailed this coffin RIGHT THERE.
Thanks for having our backs again Cary, from a greedy manufacturer that has yet to learn that loyalty & integrity go a long way with their customer base. Principled practices & transparency would render these sales tactics cloaked in new code updates unnecessary. Being forced to leave hefty pre-order deposits & then made to wait 2 & 3 years for delivery while they continue to raise their prices $2K, is enough for me to feel victimized by corporate deception & greed in this addictive hobby. Time to support the smaller, yet ethical competition or just buy slightly used games in the future. Great vid & thanks for the how-to on disabling these BS commercials.
These big companies need to react to the market and reduce their price. But they simply wont budge. It will bite them in the arse big time if they don't. Ive been buying pinballs regularly since 2012 and 2024 will be the 1st year where I wont buy a single title NIB.

At least it’s pinball ads of their own making. I like watching videos of other games so to me, it’s all good. Of course that is until they start trying selling things not related to pinball because some other company want to extend their visibility to pinball fans. I hope they never choose to go that way but they could definitely do it.
Hard to say. With lots of my machines on locations here in Australia I notice people who own machines privately still seek other machines to play. I have people with large private collections often go to my sites/locations and drop some serious $ into the machines.

Not sure the market is slowing. Stern is still churning out new and some that have been in production for a while, Deadpool, Elvira, new Elvira release. Stern also moved into a bigger location, late last year. Not convinced this is a indication of a decline. When the smaller outfits start folding as in past pinball declines then ok maybe.
@CaryHardy
8 ай бұрын
Stern moved because they were forced by the city with other perks (the move was basically paid for). Every distro has LEs for Sterns latest releases. Elvira BRKs are easy to obtain. Stern decided to help distros by allowing them to sell discontinued games at lower than MAP prices. People are having trouble selling their games for at least the same price they bought it for. Second hand market is flooded with games. Not really sure what else you need to see to conclude that the market has changed...
No! Commercials, I hate commercials! I would immediately disable. What's next, a laugh track? Christmas Story edit was perfect!
These machines are connected to the internet.. and have a big display... next thing you know we will see Tide commercials and Car ads... Don't make our games the next vehicle for infomercials.
They will charge you to take them off like Amazon does with their tablets 🤣

I definitely saw this coming. But but you can get achievements! As a former xbox 360 achievement gamer, I'm so over that nonsense.
Why Not LOLZ 😅😅
I've always said, that any product that requires ads to make you aware of it, isn't usually worth your money. It's good you can turn this dumb shit off, for now, but I would strongly recommend boycotting this practice, because you better believe, it will absolutely get worse.
Haha..they turned "Attract Mode" into a commercial. I think it's disgusting but very Stern.
Unacceptable!
Love your videos! Personally, I don’t really see a problem with Stern adding those clips. They look nice and I don’t have a problem with them adding a little variety to the attract screen loop. There are promo screens in old Bally and Williams games too directing people to websites that don’t work anymore. Seems like kind of a nothing-burger to me but I understand your point of view too. Thanks for all of your work creating content for us!

Well, that's not devils advocate. That's obviously the point of the ads. We all wanted more people in the hobby - we got it. it increased demand. which therefore increased prices. Increased prices have finally caused a market demand to decline. We are possibly about to come full circle.
