Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I have a suggestion that can help a lot. Paint with the biggest brush the size allow, because more area is covered faster and forces us to stay away from details and to be creative with the brush strokes adding quality to the brush strokes. Try to stay away from small brushes as much as possible.

One of the hardest things is to transition between drawing and painting. Painting requires understanding of the shapes, while drawing makes you more focused on lines.

As your drawing, focus on shapes and think in 3D and form and NOT in lines. That's how you should think if you want to create anything that is 3D regardless of medium. It didn't click for me until i started doing focusing on form and perspective. Try that and see where it goes!

We were told to constantly consider development of a portrait by half closing your eyes. [Computers were uncommon.] Therefore, this makes complete sense. Excellent suggestion. The other point that was always driven home, was that the most important part of getting the mouth right, was to focus on the line between the lips. Once that's correct the lips follow naturally. In all your work I've seen so far, the mouth is distracting in that it's not correct. The mouth line is too short length wise, while the lips are comparatively too "plump'. So the proportions are out both horizontally and vertically. This affects the resemblance considerably. I otherwise appreciate watching you work.

Thank you so much Chris, this exercise gives me courage to actually try and paint a portrait.
Backgrounds- I just learned about Joseph Albers’ colour perception excercises too, and exactly how much adjacent colours completely change how we perceive a colour. They’re like colour-based optical illusions, and some are really mindblowing even after I know how it works. I guess that really drove home the ‘background first’ rule.
This was so incredibly helpful! Starting with more saturated colours for skin tones is exactly the tip I needed to hear. All my skin colours always turn out way a little greyish and I didn't know how to fix it. Thanks so much! 👍
Great Jerma painting in the thumbnail
You gained yourself a new subscriber! I've been painting for years now, but hardly ever took the time to practice fundimentals like this. I'm definitely going to try this out as soon as possible.
I have a BA in Art, emphasis painting & none of my professors back then taught what you (and workshop leader) have done in nine minutes. I have learned SO much. Many thanks 🙏🏼
You're so right about painting exercises being something that transcends skill. I've been drawing and painting since I was very young, but revisiting a beginning art class at a college level has me revisiting technical practices that I needed to review.
This is a terrific exercise to strengthen one's painting skills. Thanks for the reminder that practice makes perfect.

I clicked the video cuz the thumbnail looked like Jerma
Great lesson! I've gotten so used to working from photo ref & have always had a very accurate eye so I developed the bad habit of just drawing or painting from the center outward. It can get you a likeness but eventually when you want to design new characters or work more quickly, it's def faster to start with the structure of the head first
I clicked the video so fast thinking it was a painting of Jerma.
I love your tips and advices. Learning techniques on my own sometimes are hard but your tutorial videos make me want to paint up a whole new painting, your very inspiring. thanks!

Omg I've just tried using your methods and they actually helped me a lot. I've practised oil painting for a few weeks and it was a disaster as I always started with details such as the eyes and nose. it took me weeks to finish just one painting and it looks so cartoon 😂 then I tried your methods today and it was so much easier and better. It's also a lot more time-saving. Thanks a lot for saving my life 😊
I like the idea going of vibrant to neutral. Always thought of working up to highlights (dark to light) to pop it at the end. Interested in where value and chroma intersect or cross over or....
This actually looks like a lot of fun!
I tried this for my first portrait and it turned out so good so far
clicked on this cause i thought it was jerma 😭
This just got me all excited to paint!! Amazing
Came across your work today for the first time, subscribed instantly. Appreciate the instruction.
Starting with high saturation and progressing to desaturation is the best advice in this video.👍🏻
I recently started painting portraits and it's really nice to know the way I went about it is an actual technique This vid really helped to remind me of things I already knew and not to focus so much on details so thanks! I find that when most start painting portraits we kind of glorify the face and block out most of what was learned by focusing on painting it right/perfect and then getting frustrated when it doesn't work out
bro the desaturate tip makes so much sense, always struggled with that, adding too much black by accident killing my colors, etc, thank you
having the biggest realisation about my work rn. THANK U
I'm starting with oil paintings and this Helps me a lot. Thanks for the video!
Thank you SO MUCH! This clip really helped me understand how to construct the portrait.
Wow cool. Glad I stumbled on to this. I'm teaching my eldest son art. he's getting really good, so videos like this will help the both of us. Thanks.
I like the Sargent on the shelf in the background.
I know how to do portraits but sometimes when I haven't drawn for years I forget how to block in values (or I think I've forgotten.) This reminds me what to do and to stop overthinking. Painting really does help manage over thinking.
Thank you so much, this is just the advice that I needed!
This video inspires me so much, I feel like painting good is possible for me

Oh what a fun exercise....thank you.
omg i have never seen a good vid like this! I always give up on painting with other videos but this one was so good!! My Portrait came out so well!!
It's hard to find some basic helpful pointers on portrait painting. This looks like a brilliant exercise which I definable plan to use. Studies have been done on how important the shape of a face us for recognition.... it's primary! You definitely get that... thanks for the insight.
thank you. It was inspiring
We did an exercise in my college oil painting class called “Mudheads” and this is pretty much exactly what she taught us! Thank you for this video, it refreshed the idea in my mind; to group shadows up, start with blocking in lights and dark ignoring features, and to slowly tweak your work until you’re happy with it! Time to get painting 😄
That’s really useful, make me wanna grap my brush and oils right now and start painting 🤩
Nearly Jerma in the thumbnail
Thank you!!! I work with oils and one of the things that I do that makes it difficult for myself is focusing on the details too early, I already knew I did this but your video helped me understand how to put the foundations of a painting into a better perspective if that makes sense, thanks a ton!!
Love your energy and presentation skills. Excellent!
I’ve had the most fun I’ve EVER had with painting in the 7 hours since discovering your channel. Дякую!! :]
I’m digging the content you make for your subscribers. I am thankful for subscribing to you.
yo coach just wanna say thanks a ton for these walk throughs, dunno what it is but they are working really well for me.
i got the same effect when i on a whim did pixel art for the first time. I already could draw and paint but it was really interesting because i mean even in the finer pixel range there was so much simplification going on and so much sacrifice bc of it. You really had to have your fundamentals down and it was a fun and welcoming challenge. I'll try this exercise out a lot more!!
