This Opens Airways Fast: CLEAR Mucus & Phlegm in Sinus, Chest, and Lungs! Dr. Mandell

When you're sick with a cold or other respiratory illness, inhaling steam from a vaporizer device or a bowl of hot water is very effective in many ways. It will help the body loosen up mucus and phlegm in the sinuses, chest, and lungs reducing congestion so you can breathe better and heal faster.

Steam adds warmth and moisture to the air, it improves breathing and helps loosen mucus and phlegm inside the airways and the lungs. It also relaxes throat muscles, reducing soreness and inflammation, and dilates blood vessels improving blood flow and healing. 😊

I've been doing this for over 50 years. I have a humidity gauge and if it drops below 50% I run a humidifier in my bedroom at night with the door closed. It help tremendously to keep me from getting sick! I also own a "personal steamer" which is small enough to pack up and bring with me to performances to use back stage beforehand to clear my passages. NOTHING beats a steamer. When I DON'T use one, I get sick more often. Thanks doc for sharing this with everyone.

Dr. Mandell, what are your thoughts on this: as a teen (50's now), whenever we had that hacking cough from a cold or the flu, Mom would put some ginger ale into a coffee cup with some honey and lemon and heat it up in the microwave. Obviously making sure it wasn't too hot, she would have us drink it in sips. The effervescence from the carbonated ginger ale would go up into the sinuses and the hot liquid would help break up mucus and sputum. The honey helped soothe the throat. I'm not sure what the lemon was doing for me, but Mom put it in there, so it had to be good, right? Still use it to this day when I am congested.

I use the bowl method from time to time, but half an hour or more later, the blocked nostril just blocks up again. I would like to see another video on this topic, talking about other probable causes (besides the flu etc as mentioned) that can cause your nostrils/nose to block up. Aside from airborne alleges outside, what about things like dust, or in winter using a heater a lot perhaps is drying out the air. Can dust be a high on the suspect list? it is almost every day I have at least one nostril blocked and this can hamper my sleep. Sometimes drying out one side of my sinus which gives me a sinus headache.

Dude, as soon as I heard him say take a hot shower, I'm literally letting it run right now. I stay in the big city so I have to put in some effort. Thanks

Wait. _Hot_ boiling water, you say? Well, darn! I've just been taking a pot of cold water up into the high atmosphere and waiting for the pressure to get so low the water boils without heating. Saves electricity and avoids the risk of burning myself if I spill some. But I did notice the eucalyptus oil just formed a slick on the surface of the ice, so I guess heating it could have advantages.
