I love how you are throwing parts cannon at it. You have to when you don't have the tools to scan or see what is needed to make a proper diagnosis. I have to do the same thing. I have worked on cars for years and do not have the expensive equipment to tell exactly what's wrong. Like you I research make checks and do the best I can. Normally I am right. Keep up the good work.

Yayyy ! Those teeth you see in the hole are not from a gear. It is called a reluctor. The sensor measures the change of the magnetic field caused when the highs/lows of the reluctor spin across the magnetic field of the sensor. This tells the computer how fast that wheel is or isn't turning.

  • @jasonaltham7013

On those trucks you can substitute a 1k ohm resistor for the speed sensor and see if the code changes to history. The EBCM sends a test signal to the sensors and if a sensor is open, it sets a code and turns the ABS lamp on. The actual speed sensor generates an AC signal so the resistor cannot be used to diagnose a erratic or incorrect signal but for testing for an open, the resistor will work.

I am definitely one of those people who people accuse of shooting the parts cannon at my car sometimes. I noticed that eventually, if they pay attention, they realize that my car is in very good condition for how old it is, and they appreciate that in a way. I really enjoy this car so I don't mind going above and beyond maintaining it. It's how I choose to spend my money. Also I usually have some very long and intricate reason for replacing parts without any dash lights telling me to, that involves a lot of anecdotal evidence. I think it is the engineer in me. I also hate when my car has issues, I just want it to perform at its peak when I want it to ;) . I loved the video, as usual! car: 2011 bmw 323i.

I have had a nagging stutter and Erratic misfire with a dead spot in throttle on my 1988 s-10. I looked the motor over, made a list of sensors, filters, plugs and a valve cover gasket. I worked on a portion each day and in 4 days I had it all compete. Wow does my truck run like a brand new one! I went all acdelco, absolutely NO KNOCKOFF’s because they have cost me more in the long run shorting out or even plastic tip melting “air temp sensor”. It may have cost me $300 in the parts cannon but a garage in labor would have charged almost that for diagnostic and just a few parts because of shop mark up and those parts wouldn’t have been acdelco. Now I have a few good used back up sensors put up also since 1988 parts are becoming hard to come by. Using the parts cannon can be a very good thing.

Alternatively we can use an ohm meter to measure the continuity of the wheel sensor. Depending on the brand, the sensor should have some reading not too high/low. Make a comparison between Left/Right sensor ohm reading if you do not have an OBD scanner.

You should look for an old Snapon red brick, MT2500. It's been out dated and replaced by far more current equipment. But it's perfect for something like what you have. Definitely better than some generic code reader. And because it's out dated it's cheaper, well cheapish. But you could have plugged that in and pulled the abs codes but more importantly seen the live data from the sensors. Or in your case, lack there of. I do not mind the parts cannon on and older vehicle. but sometimes its nice to narrow that stuff down,

That is great that the problem is fixed. However I would like to have seen you do only one sensor at a time and then return it to its original form, if that wasn't the problem, before checking the second one. And I would like to have seen you clean off the grease on the old one and test it clean just to make sure that wasn't the problem. What you did fixed it and that's great but the ABS system is far more complex than just a bad sensor. You can have ABS/TC lights come on when there is nothing wrong with your system, but something else is causing it. But in those cases it will come on when driving it, and usually always determines that the wheels are spinning at different RPMs. If the wheels are of a different diameter (by how much, I don't know) they will spin at different speeds and that is exactly what the ABS system is made to determine. If the tires are all identical in make and size, then the problem could be tire pressure or tread depth differences requiring rechecking the tire pressures or shaving tires that are taller due to tread depth. I'm STILL troubleshooting my 2005 Chevrolet Equinox AWD after a year of this problem. My Subaru dealer told me this is critical for AWD Subarus (I have a few of those) and requires you to shave all the tires to the same diameter if it happens or they will void the warranty on the transmission as it will ruin the transmissions!
