BYD's Hybrid SUV Targets The Toyota RAV4 (BYD Seal U / Sealion 6 2024 Review)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Detailed first review and test of the BYD Sealion 6 (Seal U), including price, models, interior, performance, handling and more.
The BYD Seal U will be called the Sealion 6 here in Australia where it will compete with both closed-loop hybrid SUVs (like the Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Haval H6 and Nissan X-Trail E-Power) and plug-in hybrids such as the Mitsubishi Outlander.
But the Sealion arrives at a very sharp price - from $48,990 before on-road costs.

Really really happy to see BYD could bring this in. You know what? The reason why JP cars keep low profile in China market nowadays is because the bloody tough competition in China. No matter local Aussie customers like or dislike Chinese cars, we need them to drag down the whole price. I am sick of the long waiting period, Toyota is really spoiled by Australia market. Good work, BYD

Great interior and cool design. Australia is still not fully ready for battery-only EV cars due to poor infrastructure rollout. Hence we see the missing link of hybrid and PHEV cars filling the gap. My only concern is a 1.5-liter engine may be underpowered to drive such a big SUV. But good to have these cars coming as healthy competition is always good to keep the prices down. Tesla has already dropped 5k in price with others following suit. Finally some good news for consumers.

However, this will pose a challenge to other hybrids and PHEVs that are sold at the same or higher price points. It will also compete with some EVs like another BYD - the Atto 3.

    1. BYD's warranty is middling. Not as good as Kia's but better than Tesla's. 2. Resale value - yep, no one knows but we can assume worse than a Toyota. But Toyota don't even sell their PHEV variants in Australia because of our lack of emission standards. If they did they'd be a lot more expensive than the BYD. 3. Reliability - if their EVs are anything to go by, very reliable but once again, no data points for PHEVs. 4. After sales support - pretty much non existent for every vehicle manufacturer, BYD no different. If you mean dealers then pretty much the same as some other brands like Nissan. 5. No spare wheel - well neither does it's main competitor the Outlander or any PHEV for that matter except for the Range Rover Sport but that's a different price bracket and size. It's much cheaper than the Outlander so we'll have to see if it catches on. I owned an Outlander PHEV for 8 years. Very reliable but if I was still in the market for that size vehicle it would be tempting.

Wait for the Sea Lion 07 as it is a BEV with only 8% wasted energy. It is RWD or AWD, IT competes with Tesla Model Y which is the best selling vehicle in the world. Bruh you might be wrong. First of all, from the gross cost perspective, the current LFP batteries on vehicles are no longer that expensive, compared with those small but with high discharge rate batteries on Japanese hybrids. Plus, BYD's phev gets rid of the gearbox. Instead, it has a very simple eCVT that only handles highway situations for the aim of fuel efficiency. 2nd, users' perspective. Larger battery packs can fully cover the daily work routine of the majority of us. It's also good for outdoor stuff like camping as well cuz it has the v2l feature, and has substantial 3.3kW capacity, some has 6.6kw. 3rd, car itself. Larger battery packs die slower. (app. 3000 times of full 0-100% charing will kill it, which is roughly 300,000km pure ev range)

Tesla have realistically held their price much better than a Camry and rav4. Used Tesla's like Toyotas if priced right is easy to sell.

I've been quoted $61k by a dealer in Melbourne area for a RAV-4 Cruiser AWD hybrid; with delivery in 6 months maximum. Yes, there are a few (less than 5) identical cars advertised online by individual Toyota dealers (not supported by Toyota head-office) for $10k over retail price; some people are not prepared to wait 6 months and are prepared to pay a premium. I've paid a $1000 refundable deposit; if not delivered in 6 months they will refund the deposit - simple deal.
