The Seal U (Sea Lion 06 in Australia) is actually the facelifted BYD Song Plus in China. The Song Plus pre-facelift BEV and PHEV combined is the best-selling BYD in China and it belongs to the Dynasty (Song Dynasty) series of the product range, but this facelift brings some major exterior changes to the car and it now belongs to the Ocean series in China, although it is still called BYD Song there. That's probably why it's called the "Seal" on the overseas market. Btw BYD PHEV system's name stands for DM-i: fuel efficiency, DM-p: performance, DM-o: off-road.

Seal U (or Song plus) is actually a budget hybrid SUV in China. You can get the best fuel efficiency and very decent space. It's a good choice for replacing Rav, Xtrail and Breeze but even cheaper. Personally, I won't choose this one because I can afford better stereo system, screen, suspension, and seats (for instance, Denza N7, also made by BYD). But for most of the people, this is good enough for daily commute, travel or even camping, alone or with your family. So it is still the best seller SUV in China.

This is actual the last model on BYD's 4th generation PHEV platform. They just released their 5th generation PHEVs this past week, and are making big claims about even lower consumption, including urban driving tests showing HEV mode (so with battery depleted) consumption as low as 2.2L/100km! Depending on how much electricity costs in your area, not charging the car at all and only using gas to power the car might actually be cheaper, which is crazy.

It's not bad looking to me. It'll all be down to confirmed UK price and specs. PHEVs are good if they fit your use and can charge them regularly. I don't like to see PHEVS that are never charged and just bought to save company car tax. I think BYD are missing a trick in not bringing the full EV too, that'll give more choice. Even better if they could give more choice by launching a smaller battery hybrid to cover for everyone.

Thanks for a thorough, well-delivered rundown on the vehicle, which is looking to be very popular in Australia. The presentation is rather impressive, seeming very well made, and switchgear is light, yet positive. However, there are a few baffling omissions from an otherwise considerable feature list from the (right-hand drive) Australian model, like a memory for the driver's seat position, and I'm told also the heated steering wheel. I'd be interested to hear if other RHD markets are similarly ""penalised.

They certainly could be a good 'gateway' model for then moving to a full EV... but only if the battery is regularly charged and utilised. When depleted, the fuel efficiency of the petrol engine will drop significantly (between 15%-30% from real-life user reports I've read) and its exhaust emissions increase dramatically - neither of which is good financially nor environmentally.

The good thing is you can do most of the things e.g. switch songs, turn up volume, activate adaptive cruise and so on via physical buttons on this car. Some complicated jobs can also be done via voice commands (and it's very fast and accurate, way better than the brands that's more expensive like Mercedes). Personally, I'm also a hater of those "screen only" cars like Tesla.

Having previously owned a Niro PHEV for 3.5 years, I can say that are a great compromise. Cheap overnight charge (50p) always gave a 30+ mile EV range regardless of the time of year. More than enough for our daily local trips, so incredibly cheap motoring, Being a PHEV meant it was also very capable of travelling the occasional longer journeys (500+ miles) with no range anxiety and economically, even though it was in effect driving as a HEV and returning 60+ mpg.

The Model 3 wasn't even launched in Europe until 2019. The market looks way different now. The Chinese version of this car (BYD Song Plus) is about the same price depending on spec for both the PHEV and the EV, which is a very capable EV too.

ok so basically there are two types of hybrids, non plugin hybrids which have tiny batteries compared to plug in hybrids and the second hybrid option is a plugin which has a larger capacity battery. since the battery is soo big the engine cannot make much energy to charge it unless the engine is used as a generator. non plug in hybrid which recharge from the engine are designed for towns or low speeds as the motor output isn't big enough as it would require a lot more battery power/capacity. whereas a plug in hybrid has a larger motor with a larger motor output and since the battery has a big capacity it can actually power the motor for quite a while. if you didn't understand what I've said then you're better off watching a video on youtube just search'' types of hybrid cars''

Zeekr、Nio

That's why they can't be sanctioned in this industry (unlike semiconductors) and the usual suspects can only enact tarriffs to slow them down. And the tired trope of slave labour, just stop - look at how many industrial robots are required to manufacture these things. Don't mistake lower wages in China vs heavily unionised fat cat work force in the west for slave labour.
