After realizing my previous credit card strategy was too complicated, I decided to simplify things…A LOT. Going forward, 95% of my personal spend will be going through 5 credit cards. 3 of those cards are with the same issuer, which alone is a big step forward in terms of simplicity because it means I can manage them all with 1 login. Plus, they all earn the same type of rewards.
It basically boils down to this: I have a new CORE credit card setup to capture that 95% of spend, and then the remainder involves select hotel credit cards and an airline credit card.
To me, it’s best to earn credit card rewards points that are flexible and transferrable. That way, you can use them in a wide variety of ways without having to be loyal to - or subject to devaluations from - a single program. For reference, here are some of the best currencies to focus on for your main spend / daily drivers. Consider focusing on 1 or 2 currencies to avoid getting too spread out:
- Chase Ultimate Rewards points, earned by the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Freedom Flex, and Chase Freedom Unlimited.
- Citi ThankYou points, earned by the Citi Premier, Citi Custom Cash, and Citi Double Cash.
- Amex Membership Rewards points, earned by the Amex Platinum Card, Amex Gold Card, and Amex Blue Business Plus.
- Capital One Venture Miles, earned by the Capital One Venture X and Capital One Venture cards.
- Bilt Rewards points, earned by the Bilt Mastercard
- Wells Fargo Rewards points, earned by the Wells Fargo Autograph, Wells Fargo Autograph Journey, and indirectly via the Wells Fargo Active Cash (the cash back earned with this card can be converted into points if you have either of the two Autograph versions).
Of course, you can also blend cards across multiple programs mentioned above, but that’s generally best if you prefer travel rewards and intend to transfer points into a common partner program.

Mark, you really delivered with this one. This is very cool. This gives me some great ideas for my own simplified setup. I’ve decided recently to pursue the Altitude Reserve later this year as my primary card and can see the value I could gain by making it my primary card where mobile wallet is accepted. Couldn’t the Wells Fargo autograph card be a contender in leu of the Citi Premier. Seems to have similar 3x categories from recollection.

Great video! Nice to see more Citi coverage. I like the cash back and travel hybrid setup. Finished that trifecta recently and I really like it. Also have Amazon Prime Visa. For a little more cash back I’ve been using the Amex BCP for groceries and streaming until I can get a second Custom Cash. Also I use the WF Autograph for a few other 3% categories (phone, FIOS internet which codes as phone, transit) and cell phone protection. Planning to PC the DC to another CC and get the WF AC to replace the DC. WF and Citi will work well together for Choice 1:2. Starting Chase cards next year mainly for churning and travel protection.

Nothing sexy about the citi trifecta for me, but their trifecta is definitely an easy and nice setup to use I would imagine. They honeymoon period seems to be sunsetting with Amex. In this economy, it's unsustainable to pay high annual fees and add the stress of coupons. The average person won't do it. Not to mention that pretending to be a jetsetting traveler at $1000 for their trifecta is lunacy. Most people won't see an airport more than twice a year.

I’m curious what you guys think. I live in Austin, TX so the only lounge here is the CSR terrace and Austin would obviously be my home airport. My main spend is grocery and restaurant like most people, but Chase doesn’t have a grocery category. How would you guys go about building a strategy that focuses on travel, but obviously covers my spends? I’m an avid traveler (probably once or twice a year) but I want to travel more in the future.

  • @MarkReese

    @MarkReese

    2 ай бұрын

If my focus were travel rewards and grocery + restaurant were big send categories, I'd consider the following: Amex - Gold Card - Blue Business Plus or... Capital One - Venture X - SavorOne Then, if I valued lounge access, I'd consider the co-branded airline credit card of the carrier I fly the most. Options include: - Citi AAdvantage Executive Card - United Club Infinite Card - Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card (or Amex Platinum Card...not the 'Delta' version) ^ This is because AUS Airport has a Delta SkyClub, AA Admirals Club, and United Club. You'll need to be flying with the corresponding carrier in order to enter their lounge, but a big advantage to these club networks is that they tend to be located near the gates you're flying out of.

@@MarkReese Ok thanks! I might consider the Capital One duo because I wouldn't really utilize the Amex credits as much. I don't really eat at the places for the dining credit and I drive everywhere (it's Texas LOL) so other than the MR points I wouldn't really be gaining anything from the card itself. Still a good card though, but I think the Cap1 duo is better suited for me! Thanks again for the input and have a good one. :)

Citi does seem like a wonderful setup, but I probably won't do it. I can't seem to get the value from the $100 hotel credit. We've booked several hotels this year, but none have got to the $500 threshold. And paying annual fees without getting the value back is hard for me to swallow, especially with those partners. They're good! But I've started to see that domestic flights sometimes dont have partner availability, and that's what I use the most, so having Delta, United, Southwest, etc is very helpful. Maybe one day though! If we spend more on hotels at some point haha :)

its 5% back on up to $500/mo in any category, not $25 (I assume you meant $250?) which for most people is more than enough for gas so it gets used as an automatic 5% discount on gas. Ive seen some people use it for dining as well, since most people dont spend more than $500/mo eating out they get a 5% discount at restaurants. For single people or couples, $500/mo is enough for groceries as well, and that is most peoples largest spend category, so its also commonly used as a free 5% discount on groceries every month. I've even seen some people use it for niche categories too, lets say you want to buy a bunch of new power tools to start a home renovation project. Well the custom cash gives you 5% off up to $500 of those tools that month, or it can be sued on sports game/concert tickets, etc. This is the biggest draw of the card, it is flexible and can be used for anything to fit around the other credit cards you have.

@@char741 ah thanks for the clarification, but most other cards give even less than that. If you spend $2000+ a month on groceries (large family lets say) then youll more than likely have a dedicated grocery card and the citi custom cash becomes your gas card. There is a near 100% chance that an applicable category (groceries, dining, gas, other) comes in at less than $500 spend for you per month, which means that the $25 saved by the citi custom cash is still more than any other card you could have put those purchases on
