5. Confirm & submit.

5. Transfer Ratios have little to do with how much value you get

7. How to determine if a redemption is good
8. How to determine if you should use transfer partners
9. Do your research BEFORE transferring points

    👉 *TYPO:* At 9:31 I showed Marriott with a 1:2 transfer ratio. That should have been Hilton 😄✌ The thought process / strategy is still the same, however.

    Got me really excited there for a second with that Marriott 1:2. Though, the Hilton 1:2 is not a true 1:2 as their point nights are usually double of a marriott stay. So it’s honestly a 1:1

    With the increased spike in delays and cancellations, it’s more risky to book flights via a third party (like portals). If your flight gets cancelled the airline may not be able to rebook you directly. You may be stuck having to call chase/amex/whoever while you’re at the airport to get rebooked. Another reason to use transfer partners instead of booking through the portal.

  • @MarkReese

    Great point. And yep, I'm a big fan of booking direct for that reason ✈️

    OMG. So true. I booked via Chase portal and they changed my flight schedule multiple times. I called back and forth between Chase and Qatar. I ended up cancelling the flight and rebooked directly with airlines.

    Great video. I wish I had this knowledge last October when I got my CSP and just used the portal to set up flights and hotels. Just got 3x back. I had set up Southwest and IHG accounts but had no idea how to do any of this stuff you showed in the video. Am sure I would have saved a ton using transfer partners and points instead of getting 3x back. Have since used card for 2x back at hotel stays. I will now start transferring points or use portal and do comparison shopping to get much better value especially on flights. Thank you for making this video. Probably your second most important one. Your understanding credit card statement video is number one.

    Thanks Shawn! I'm encouraged to hear this video gave you strong value 😃💯 Also, you may want to consider booking Southwest flights (via phone w/ Chase rep) & IHG hotels directly via the Chase UR portal instead of transferring Chase points into those 2 programs. On average... - Southwest points = 1.2¢ each - IHG points = 0.5¢ each However, Chase UR points have the following guaranteed values with the following credit cards... - CSP = 1.25¢ - CSR = 1.50¢

    Where I get stuck is - I want to book an ANA flight for example, I transfer my points to Virgin. Where do I book the flight? On Virgin? I’ve had situations where I know the partner airline flies the itinerary I want but when I search the other airline those flights don’t show up. I would love a walk through of the actual booking process for partner airlines, I haven’t seen any KZreadrs tackle this. Otherwise this was an awesome breakdown, always appreciate your videos - thank you!❤

  • @MarkReese

    @MarkReese

    Жыл бұрын

    This is where the transfer partner game gets complex (and ANA>Virgin is one of the least straight forward redemptions in the entire industry) 😁 To book ANA via Virgin, you want to search for availability via United Airlines or Air Canada. Write down the flight # and class you desire. You'll then need to pick up your phone & call Virgin to have them confirm space on that itinerary. That's when you'll want to transfer points into Virgin's program (should be done instantly) and have the phone agent complete the booking (either on the same call or on a 2nd call). I'll consider a video about this at some point. Meanwhile, the OMAAT blog did a write-up on this last year. Here's a link: onemileatatime.com/guides/redeem-virgin-atlantic-points-ana/

    I was entirely disgusted when I really saw low low value of points to Hilton rooms I wanted so today I tried a Marriott. Most were meh blah but I found one that got me. A room in Chicago Halloween weekend that woukd have cost over $1,200 cash. However with the boost right now I transfered 57,000 got 68,000, used them and $300 cash. So 900 / 57,000 equals 1.578 cents per point. I am so happy and looking forward to my first Marriott stay. Take care, great sir. Best to you Everyday! Haha (because of your most recent video)

This is good info for me as now I know how to redeem UR w/my CSP when I’m ready. Also, with your division, if I got it correctly. Apple products give a 1:1 ratio on UR.

There may also be limited-time promotions that run throughout the year when UR points can be worth 1.25¢ - 1.50¢ each for Apple products depending on the card you have. Great video and great advice, Mark (especially on the alliance part where booking via a partner airline may lead to a better value) and one more thing I noted : some airlines have bonus offers! I see that in the venture X section where both AF and BA were offering 20% bonus miles! Not sure if you mentioned this already in the video. I have a question : can I link multiple cards to one award program to boost miles? Transfer from BILT and Venture x to af flying blue as an example?

  • @MarkReese

    @MarkReese

    Correct, all of the major transferable point programs offer limited-time bonuses to select partners throughout the year. Yes, you can transfer points from all major programs (Chase, Amex, Citi, C1, Bilt) to common transfer partners by linking the same airline / hotel account to each one.

    Just get a flat cash back credit card. Some provide as high as offer 2% cash back on EVERYTHING. Unless you're a frequent traveler or restaurant customer, 2% cash back is a better benefit. I use mine at: - the doctors - dentists - for car insurance - cable - cell phone bills - amusement parks - etc. Even if you can transfer points with these other credit cards to fly first class, I'd rather enjoy the flexibility of flying where ever and whenever I'd like and find my own cheap tickets, than have this dictated to me by having to get the maximum value for my points.

    Very helpful. I'm still on the fence of whether cashing all the points out and putting it in investments or not would be the better option. I figure I don't travel too much anyway, and if the average return is 10% a year, using simple interest for sake of easy math. Chase points invested for 2.5 years (probably less due to the reality of compounding interest) would put the "value" of the points at 1.25 just like the sapphire preferred, 5 years if you have the reserve. But then anything after five years is bonus. Then there is the reality of if you don't do something with the points soon you are losing out, points redemption and program changes, inflation, years of lost interest. Example, I'll probably break 1 million Chase points soon, and for now we've been banking them for a theoretical travel. The only certainty is while they points sit in that balance pool, they do no good and lose value. It's very tempting to just cash them all out and then if I ever do take a trip then just pay cash for it. The only thing I'm holding back on is if I could do one of those extraordinary trips like the maldives for a few hundred instead of tens of thousands cash. I'm very suspect of the people that post those videos. If it was so easy and commonplace why isn't everyone under the sun doing it...I mean come on, a $20k+ trip for only points and a few hundred bucks? I don't quite buy it. I think something else has to be at play here. /end thought.

  • @MarkReese

    @MarkReese

    Жыл бұрын

    There's no trickery involved. The reason why everyone is NOT doing it is because the vast majority of people: (a) Don't know how to do it and (b) Are not willing to get a bunch of credit cards to get enough points to make it happen. It can also be difficult to plan. The amount of research involved with transfer partners, alliances, routes, award availability, etc. can be a real headache. If you don't travel much, then it probably doesn't make sense to keep collecting travel points. If I were in that situation, I'd personally cash them out & invest. Then, if / when I wanted to get into travel, I could simply get more cards with more bonuses. It's not like if you redeem them all, you can never earn more again. There's no scarcity of points in the U.S. market.

    great video. I needed this. I know you're probably swarmed with replies to this video and your poll earlier but can you plan a video about hidden information when applying for cards?? As an example, I watched a video that says there are 3 separate kind of visa cards (visa signature, visa unlimited, I forgot the 3rd). visa unlimited cards supposedly have a minimum credit line of $10K and require a minimum credit score of 720. (Venture X was their example for this card). Another example from a separate video said that the max credit line a certain company (I can't remember which) would only approve someone for 50% of their annual income. I'm sure you probably know of others. this kind of information would, I think, help alot of people out in conjunction with getting them excited about a shiny new card.
