I always thought Mick Mars was the underrated secret weapon to the Crue's success. Not really a shredder on par with Lynch or Rhoads but he had a groove and knack for simple catchy riffs and solos, a lot like Ace Frehley.

I always made that link between Ace Frehley and Mick Mars. They both have that same alien vibe going on and have a very similar way of playing, Looks That Kill and Cold Gin have the same notes and everything. But the best part is that you can be completely certain that Mick Mars absolutely did not copy/was inspired from Ace, because he loathed Kiss. It's kind of mind blowing.

That's actually something I like trying for fun, playing a riff in a lower position, but I play it down-tuned with heavy distortion (aka my usual). It's like making my own brutal metal covers. One of my favs to do like that is Sunshine Of Your Love, Drop C and in the neighborhood of the 5th position, turns it into a groove metal track 😈 Carry On Wayward Son in D/C Std also s c h l a p s (can't do it in a lower position tho)

Incorrect tunings are the worst! When I was 18, I vividly remember I had this tab book for the Zeppelin "Remasters" box set, and I spent hours using it to learn "The Rain Song"... in Standard Tuning! A few days later, another kid randomly noticed I was playing it wrong, and played the song for me in the correct tuning. My jaw hit the floor when I saw how much easier it was, and how much better it sounded.

@@Kylora2112 if you fudge a few chords you can play a passable version in standard tuning. I remember learning a standard tuning version from some magazine transcription back in the mid 80s.

Learning this by ear back in 1984, without even realising that they tuned down a whole step, was a whole world of hurt, lol 😂

I would have been the kid going around telling everybody that Mick Mars was playing the songs all wrong cause I got the book and this is how it's really supposed to be played 😂😂😂😂

Depending on the artist, some will write sheet music before actually playing it, and they'll kind of rewrite the song but not the sheet music so the sheet music, while being the original way to play, becomes inaccurate. I know because this is something I myself have done, and I've seen classical works and their manuscripts compared to the actual artists playing them and they're slightly different. (Sometimes, in recent history, artists (usually pianists) would play on a player piano roll and that roll would be almost an analog "recording" of how that artist played their own piece.

I wonder about the backstory of these books. I assume we’re not dealing with an evil transcriber out there to troll kids who wanted to learn Motley Crue. So what’s the deal? I heard this could be piano players who may have a good ear but little understanding on how a guitar is played. Would love to know more!

I’d say you nailed it with the “piano player transcriber” idea. This was an era of innovation and transcribers were few and far between, and way behind. All the best qualified to transcribe were too busy innovating and creating to transcribe and teach.

Long work hours for poor pay The people transcribing often took shortcuts because they were paid per page/book. They weren't QC'd very much. There's lots of stories about Berkeley guitar students being hired by these companies and they often weren't treated very well.

🆁∕∕∕🆂 What a way to introduce yourself, jackass. “In the 80s”… Like the whole decade was the same. Every year of that decade was different. If you want to be an arrogant know it all, you better know something first. Guitarists were a dime a dozen in the 80s? Sure, but 99.98 percent of them weren’t interested in being transcribers in the early 80s, or particularly good at it anyway. I was there, and old enough to be one of the guys who was learning these parts as they arrived. When that book was published, the music landscape was chaos, in a good way. Nobody who had the ear to learn those parts wanted to sit in a room in a day job for months transcribing them. They were out playing them, and trying to innovate based on them. It’s not like now, where everybody has this bullshit consensus even about what a good guitar sound is, and has no barrier at all to learning parts. You can take one step away from this comment and have an acceptable answer to any question about any part. Call me a boomer if you like (I’m GenX) but at least I know something about the 80s. If you are old enough to remember it, you certainly forgot what was happening then. It was the wild west. Gunslingers don’t really care about teaching people to draw iron, and they didn’t then. In fact, most of them were trying to HIDE their “secrets”. What you say has no logic to it. “Well, duh, we want to hire people to do something, so let’s not hire people who look like the people doing it, duh.” No, I’d say those people were out trying and mostly failing to be rock stars. I don’t know if I’m 100% correct about this specific point, I just made an educated guess based on my own experience. I do know that know-it-alls always “knew it all”, and therefore never learned anything that they should know.

This isn't a guitar transcription, though - it's obviously a piano transcription (and playing music arranged for piano on a guitar is obviously going to be awkward). This can be seen from the use of the grand staff, and markings like "R.H." (meaning "right hand"). Guitar would be written on a treble clef, one octave higher than notated here. And if you actually played these on piano, they would probably sound pretty good. But the question here is, why would anyone want to play these on piano? This songbook makes little sense, even though the transcriptions aren't really that bad.

It’s hard to find someone who plays Too Young to Fall In Love that clean. Sounded spot on.

That's when I started in the 70s and it was chord chart city. Listen to the song a million times and figure it out 🙂

This video made me FURIOUS. When I finally bought my first electric guitar, I also bought songbooks like this. I gave up thinking Kiss and Scorpions were just too hard for my ability. Not the solos- just the songs themselves. Good thing SRV came along and forced me back into guitar.

Every song they recorded in the 80s was in D standard. But I never knew that til about 5 years ago. I had some Crue fake book with tablature that had everything played off the low E string on the 3'rd fret instead of the open A string that's tuned down to G. In Guitar For The Practicing Musician maybe around 1994 a writer did a story about how they basically invented modern guitar tab and that mist of those books were made by pianists that's why it's in key with the music but still not right

Man, I wish we would’ve had you tube back in the day. Great vid . I remember trying to learn these songs , and again I had no idea about different tunings back then. I could never figure out why everything sounded terrible.

I still to this day have and own alot of bands tab books, we didn't have Google or KZread to learn stuff, and yes it's still scary today in age, not everyone is correct or right, tunning is a must ! Alot of us had to learn the hard way ! Play, innovate, find your playing style and such, and you will find your way, knowing your instrument ! Great video man, love it !

Lol, I remember buying an 80’s metal song book back in 85’ that had Shout at the Devil in it. I had only been playing for a year or two at that point. No TAB only notation. I struggle to play what was written and just like you showed, it was nothing like what Mick plays. Brought back memories…thanks for that. Dig your videos…peace.

I lived through these books in the 80's. Thank God for Guitar Player Mag. and more, plus my buddies having good ears.

You learn to play all those absurd transcriptions so fast and still make them sound cool, a true professionalist

Sounds like when WCW would take hits and just change a note for entrance themes ala DDP, Raven, Jericho

All of these Motley Crue songs in this particular book are actually arranged for piano and vocal. The chord boxes are just additional accompanying guides for strumming guitar chords. The piano parts sound an octave higher than written in comparison to a guitarist reading the same notes. This accounts for Mike's guitars sounding an octave lower when he plays the Charvel guitar. Back in the 80s, guitar tab was a relatively new language. It was a number of years before it became standardised.

I remember buying that back in the 80s and struggling through exactly what you're demonstrating. Good times. =/

I had a really bad motley book when I was a kid so this video hit home for me. I actually gave up on learning them and switched to Metallica which really opened up a whole new world on guitar when your 13. Thanks for all your vids!

I remember when you first started being able to get tabs in the 80s. It was mind-blown level back then. I used to ride my bike to the store and buy of book of tabs. Music notation books like these were available in record stores (where you bought 33rpm and 45rpm vinyl and 8-track and cassette tapes). The store would have a whole wall section devoted to books like these. Classical, blues, rock/metal, etc. When tabs first started showing up, the covers would have big shout out graphics: "now with full tablature!" and "now with bass tab included!".

Hi! I know this is probably not your cup of tea but, it involves The Monkees... I know, just please hear me out. lol I was in my teens, just learning to play guitar, and MTV started showing Monkees reruns, and I loved the show, and thought the music was okay, and I started to try to play the songs I heard (I had/have a pretty good ear)... So, I started learning some songs to get the feel of the guitar, and one of the hardest for me was Pleasant Valley Sunday. So, I saw this music book called "The Monkees: Greatest Hits" by Warner Bros. Publications Inc. and, I looked at PVS, and it was transcribed a half-step higher, which made it incredibly hard to play at my stage of development. Also, there was no tablature (but I played violin in HS, and piano, and could tell what the notes were.) STILL, they didn't have to make it so difficult! I soon realized how to really play it, but it still sticks in my mind as a terrible transcription. Thanks for listening, and please don't judge. lol

As someone who started on piano then transitioned to playing guitar, I wouldn't have thought twice about buying one of those "guitar" books that had everything but the tab, much less about how the guitar was supposed to be tuned. It definitely led to me questioning my sanity when I learned to play Home Sweet Home (in C) by ear then later finding sheet music that had it in D. (Incidentally, I also first learned to play Metallica's "Enter Sandman" on piano before taking up guitar) I have to definitely the tonality of the notes with the alternate tunings. By the way, respect for the Nightmare on Elm Street 3 VHS!

This album is basically my "end of childhood, beginning of wanting to be a man...actually had drum sticks but no drums before getting a guitar a few years later when i heard "Kill em All". Wow, a nightmare on elm Street vhs. I haven't finished the video, so I don't know if it's mentioned, but I hope it's from the set that makes a picture of Freddy when the tapes are all side by side.

I remember that style of book well. As a kid, my way of learning something was always to go buy a book on it so when I got interested in guitar, I bought the piano-style arrangement w/guitar chord diagram books for "Frampton Comes Alive" and "Led Zeppelin Complete" (Which included all the tunes through "Houses of the Holy"). Were they the best introduction to rock guitar possible? No way. But I learned stuff from them. The Zeppelin book even had several actual solos written out, without a tab staff but with superscripts listing string/fret for each note. Neither of those were perfect in every respect, but both of them did significantly better than that Crue book seems to have done. (As a further note, when I decided to try to learn to play solos, a book called "Improvising Rock Guitar" that came with a flexible record insert featuring Pat Thrall solos, provided the framework I worked from for quite a long while.

Honestly, I learned a ton buying the book, realizing it's wrong, then "bridging the gap" to make what I was playing sound like the record. It's a good stepping stone to critical listening and learning to play by ear.

If I'm not mistaken I one time saw a book in a store that was Anthrax for piano.

This may or may not be obvious but these songs are transcribed for piano and vocal, and the guitar chords are provided as a courtesy. I have this book. It was published in 1984 and Motley was not yet the household name they would eventually become. As such, the book was created with the intention of capturing the widest appeal. Transcribing for piano does that. The piano is not a transposing instrument (unlike guitar, brass, and many wind instruments), it can show a wider scope of the overall arrangement, and you don’t have to be a guitar player to learn passable versions of these songs. Concert band and orchestra music has been transcribed like this for more than 100 years. Now, if your a pianist transcribing distorted guitars, mistakes are bound to arise. You also have to work around the instrument’s limitations (a piano can’t bend or perform pinch harmonics). There’s definitely some weird stuff in this book if you’re a guitarist, but it’s meant to appeal to a much wider audience so the publishing company can make the most money. I would guess there wasn’t a lot of demand for exact transcriptions of these songs at that time.

Do a video on the tab book of the first Boston album.

I totally get the point, and the notation is definitely not accurate; but why would standard notation require you use a standard tuned guitar? Guitar tuning matters when you are reading a TAB, but when reading standard notation, a D is still a D, and a G is still a G--even if it falls in a different place of the fretboard due to a different tuning.

Love watching these vlogs , but heres a question for you . Were there any transcribers from the 80s/90s who came close to being any good/accurate , bought a lot of American/U.k mags in my time and never knew who was good and who was way off ? Would love to hear who you rate and who you do not .

It was me… I was that 16 yo kid in 1984, I still have that book. no wonder I sounded like ass. That dam book broke me. I ended up quitting.….. 35 years later I picked up the guitar again during Covid. I’m now 54 and can finally play some parts of crue songs… maybe not the solos but at least the main licks.

I play both piano and guitar and this is 100% piano book. You can tell by "R.H" in notation so your right hand play the notes above and left hand plays the notes below on the keyboard. I wouldn't even try to learn songs from this book on guitar because it was transcribed by pianist.

I didn’t play guitar at the time but I remember my dad buying a hits of 1983 book that was just a general songbook with treble and bass clef. When I did start guitar I tried and failed so bad so I just did the chord charts. It was sad. 🤣

There's a tab book for the Ozzy/Randy live Tribute album, which is pretty decent. It even mentions when the song is tuned a half step down.

I remember trying to learn Tie Your Mother Down from one of those book, the chord sequence was ear bending, and you had to tune the A to a tuning fork back then. If they at least had the on piano vocal melody, you could work on something.

Wow yeah that is strange maybe they did it that way because they thought tuning down was confusing a lot of people think drop d is just tuning your low e string down but I learned it was tuning all of your strings down cool video I love motley Crue

Too Young first riff and the tone reminds me of 'Man On The Silver Mountain" for a second.

You should look into the Guitar Anthology book for the band Extreme. The song Hole Hearted looks kinda screwed up but the rest of the book seems okay.

I remember learning l4 Crue tunes for an audition.. I learned them in "Crue Tuninh"... The guitar player learned them in standard... I had to transpose on the spot.

Hahaha I had this book too! In mid 80s my mom got me guitar lessons but the teacher was an old lady who taught theory, sight reading, and singing. She knew just enough guitar to accompany herself and teach music theory. I got bored with Mel Bay so she bought me this book and I had to sight read from it. I'm not a Crue fan so I had no idea at the time how wrong it was.

No joke I tried self teaching in the late 80's eith books like this. Amps pedals guitars, I couldnt get the right sound. So I gave it up for about 20 years. Which book did the actual with drop tune come from? STG I'll buy it tomorrow. Great playing as usual BTW

In the 80's i hated those books ...but thanks to that my ears learned to recognize sounds and chords better and how to dissect songs by blocks instead of playing from the books.

I had / have a book like this of Rush songs that goes up through Moving Pictures. Total nightmare fuel trying to decipher the book versus recording.

I appreciate the honest recognition of the difference between notation on staff paper compared to "tabulature" for songs with "different" guitar tuning. However, the notation translation in this book (I own it as well) is not far off from what is possible with only four left fingers and a thumb while tuned standard. These books were designed for students that want to broaden their personal spectrum of music across ANY instrument. Maybe tab is a BETTER way for rockers to get it done...??
