I once played on a hit record and was very excited to see that the song had been transcribed in a guitar magazine, but when I looked at the tabliture.(which I read very slowly, by the way). It was NOTHING like what I'd actually played. It wasn't even in the same position on the neck.! I've kept it as a souvenir, because it's simply amazing. I suppose the transcriber was a real guitarist and trying to think out theoretically what I SHOULD have been playing instead of what I really was playing. Fun FACT: I was playing a slide guitar for the first time and my slide was a BIC Pen.

Now it finally makes sense why there seems to be contention whether this song is in F#m or Dm... I looked into the song the first time my bass student came in since I had heard he'd been learning it, and most of the tabs and chord sheets online were convinced it's in Dm and I was like "no way is this right." And then when the kid came over, he played it in Dm as well.

This is the main reason I started my KZread channel. When I first started learning Ghost songs I'd have a look at online bass tabs for reference. As bad as you think guitar tabs are, bass is definitely worse! Totally wrong, or notes in the wrong octave or position. I thought, if I were a young kid today learning bass I'd pick up so many bad habits. So I decided to transcribe Ghost songs as accurately as possible, using live footage and decades of training my ear to pick out bass parts. With today's technology there's no reason for bad tabs, it just takes a little work. Sadly most won't put in the work. When I get comments saying my tabs are the best out there, I feel very proud.

teenaged me used tab books to get in the neighborhood of where they were, then I’d hunt for the right sound. when Nevermind hit, I discovered that I could play & sound like Kurt, not like Jimi or Jimmy. that kept me going. I’m over 40 & play out 1-2 times a month. thanks, Kurt! I had to have success playing Nirvana covers in ‘90s junior high before I could get the feel & chops to play & sound like Jimi, Jimmy & pals. plus, the chics could care less about me nailing ‘Comm. Breakdown,’ but playing & singing ‘Breed, Lithium, Teen Spirit’ & the rest of Nevermind piqued the right interest at parties. I think I piqued 3 times in one night…maybe even 4.

Early "easy-tab" books written in the early 80s sucked because (money-wise, especially) they were an off-shoot of "easy piano" books, and were written by staff-writers who only played piano. Then came a few people like Andy Aledort and Wolf Marshall, and they were MUCH better. Tab books suck today because they don't sell.

I had the Cherry Lane Easy Guitar Use Your Illusion 1 tab book. I hated it because it had about a tenth of each song. But now I think about it decades later, even if it wasn't accurate it taught me some riffs and later down the line I could work them out better. Whoever transcribed 'Come As You Are' clearly wasn't trying to do what was on the record but something to accompany it. Like a ghost track.

Having 41 years old currently I can say I grow up on listening grunge music and Nirvana (that was my era of music) and it was the first band that song I used to learn on the guitar almost fully. As I remember in 1993 when I started to learn how to play the guitar I borrowed a copy of Come As You Are by Nirvana tab from my friend who copied from other guy's copy who probably also copied from other guitarist who bought original famous Guitar magazine. So I did a photocopy on Xerox and learned partly this song : intro, verse and the bridge. However I learn it on the classical guitar, so there was no guitar effects like Electro Harmonix chorus or Boss effects to even heard off somewhere or to buy at all. Actually I got known that they used this on record in 2005 - 2010 around. Anyway first 2 years of my guitar learning I used to learn both techniques on the classical guitar and electric guitar by playing it on classical guitar! Yeah, Hammer on and tapping on classical guitar 😄 You can imagine playing Acdc, Judas Priest or Jimi Hendrix on the classical guitar... In my country Poland in 90's or 80's there were almost none of acoustic guitars in music stores. Electric guitars as well were poor made and rare. Even if they were acoustic guitar (that is more popular in USA than classical guitar as for the beginners) here in Poland there where more like to buy similar classical shape guitar with metal strings at that time than real acoustic guitar. I used to learn on such guitar (made in 70s) borrowed by my mother from her friend family. I played it on the classical nylon strings. I think most of those tabs were transcribed into tabulatures by classical guitar players or classical teachers. It's looks like they adopted the grunge song to by played with no more extending than 5th fret. Anyway Mike thank you for showing us the difficulties in playing of ill-made tabs of Nirvana. It's looks that musical 🎼 🎶 notes were caught by ear by orchestrator and put on violin key with notes according to musical theory key, tonality and then transcribed into tabs. Or on the other hand it is visible that it can be played more or less well by reading musical notes only and not tabs at all, since there are hardly any special description in tabs for Electric guitar techniques like vibrato or slide. But I can't think it was a midi program who cracked the code and put the notes automatically on 5 lines and transcribed into tabs. Because it's looks like the whole description for electric guitar techniques were skipped. Greetings from Poland! 🇵🇱 🙋‍♂️ Tom

They are rhtym/melody hybrid books so you can play arrangements alone and they have a little more color....there used to be certain complaines that did tabs like the record and of course, guitar magazine...and they had awesome guys that knew theory and how to figure out what to play...sometimes they had the artists contribute as well. Tab is good if you get it from the right source

I'm pretty sure tabs that come from the Guitar World Mag are spot on.Earlier one's from the 80's maybe not so much.

It’s not an « easy guitar » book, but I guess I’ve found a kind of treasure (a lazy guitar book) 😄 As a bassist who want to improve my guitar skills, I’ve ordered the « Definitive AC/DC songbook…Updated Edition » (!!). I’ve received it today. I’ve first noticed that the « Have a drink on me » riff is missing the first « C » note from what I know but I was thinking: “ok, maybe that’s a bad interpretation from my side when I first learned it as I’m a 6 strings newbie, so ok”… I flip the pages, and I go to a classic: Highway to hell… Tried the solo (which is often stated as « not so much complicated »)…started it… and…well…wait…🧐 Where is the end of the solo??!!! 😱😄😄 I look at the page numbers, there is no page missing!! Only the 8 first bars of this classic!!!! Hal Leonard, what have you done??!! 😺 I could notice these 2 issues with my poor guitar level on the 5 first minutes of book use!! 😄 I bet there are some additional kind of issues on the 840 remaining pages (I expect not, but If we trust statistics…) 😄 Guess it could be a good candidate for a new video… 😉 Are some owners who agree?
