This Mirror Reflects Your Truest Self
You haven’t really seen yourself until you’ve gazed into an Aranmula kannadi. These mysterious mirrors have been made in India, for centuries, and are said to reflect your truest self. Unlike plane mirrors, Aranmula kannadi are front-reflecting, meaning the image that is shown is not distorted. Today, there are only a handful of families handcrafting them out of an alloy of tin and copper. They’re expensive, but for good reason. Haradi, a local craftsman, guides us through the complex, painstaking process of making one of these gorgeous showpieces.

It's a handycraft items, not mass production items. You can't compare an apple with a peanut. The craftmen's skill, time, effort & soul which put into making such items give them their own values, thus also give them their own price... Apparently phone cameras take multiple photos and then makes a composite with a lot of software, so it's not really just a picture, though in some ways it's more accurate to human vision
imagine the moment you ordered this kind of mirror and was excited to use it and once you saw your self in the mirror you were awestruck by how NOT bad you actually look
There is a lot to making an alloy even by modern standards - the ratio of each element, the stage at which it is added, the thermal process, exposure to external elements etc. They all affect how the alloy crystallizes, how many defects it has and how it attains its properties. Mirror grinding is also an intricate multistage process - requiring an entire different set of skills and materials. They have shown you only a fraction of the know how required for this. Even modern aerospace alloy making and manufacturing processes are guarded secrets. But these historical alloys were invented so long ago when the world was not so advanced. Those families rightly cherish those knowledge as a generational gift. Another example of such a time honoured tradition is the 'katana' (samurai sword) of Japan. Here is long video about its creation: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iHmTltyBfsbPlbA.html P.S: I really like crystals, though I don't know much about it. It's a microcosm of pure symmetry and layers of complexity that defines everything see. Even the computer chips I use to write this has incredible amount of thought and discovery in the pure crystals they use.

This family is so proud, and rightfully so, of this traditional art, craft and skill, that they have nurtured and are practicing over so many generations. They deserve our appreciation and our gratitude for having the tenacity, dignity and regard for their heritage, and keeping it alive against so many adverse pressures, when so many of us have failed to do so with ours. I will surely buy one of these mirrors. I hope that someone in touch with the family will pass my regards to them.

I love how they do it hand made. Yup it is not perfect but that makes it unique. I mean you a buying a mirror distinct from others.
I am from Kerala and I never witnessed an Aranmula Kannadi though I heard of it a lot. Good documentary
