This $1,000 Walking Stick Doubles as a Weapon

The makhila is much more than a walking stick. It’s a work of art and a weapon, too. Unscrew the handle, and you’ll find a forged spike inside. That said, most people carry a makhila in peace, or display the beautifully-crafted object in their homes. Liza Bergara is the seventh generation in her family to make makhilas at her family’s shop is in the French Basque country. Wood for the walking sticks comes is harvested from medlar trees planted by her great-grandfather. A makhila is typically bestowed upon someone to mark an achievement, and French president Emmanuel Macron, Charlie Chaplin and Pope John Paul II are among the celebrated people who have been honored with them.
This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis.

@N Vannote Yeah, sure. But compare this to the crazy 35 grand bonsai scissors that Great Big Story featured a while back or those crazy prized japanese chefs knives. They were both pricey just because of its history and exclusivity. This one is in a same magnitude, for a grand. I've seen some people spend a grand on more stupid stuff without such story and sense. Just watch Pawn Stars. Imagine having the same type and caliber of makhila that Charlie Chaplin or Pope John Paul II and passing it down generations of the family as an heirloom. I think it's a bargain just for that alone. Besides at an age where we would need a cane, we should have saved up some money to spend already. But hey, can't blame you if you just want a stick from the park as a cane.

@N Vannote What's so wrong about spending your money on what you enjoy? You have no idea about his financial status so please stop making idiotic comments. It really shows how idiotic you truly are with your patronizing comment. Everyone spends their excess money in ways that can be idiotic when seen in different lenses, a good headphone for example is not neccessary for us to live on and yet it is perfectly fine to buy one if you have the money. Please think before you talk, it would serve you well to use what little is left of your minute brain before it dissapears. :)

probably not, but there are 4 million people with a hunting license in France. Only a fraction of these actually hunt. A hunting license is the only way to get your hands on a good rifle in France.

juamnji yes there really is no point to it in modern times other than an assassin or if you are an old assassin, spy’s could also use it, and maybe if someone has a gun, depending on where u live, this isn’t the best job, but a criminal might use it, maybe u are a retired vampire hunter and you are back on duty, but now with a wooden cane that’s very pointy.

E this is not reddit to downvote m8, here is a dislike, but if u want u can keep calling it downvote, it sounds cool.Well they are not “promoting” the product, they are telling you the story behind it, if you want to know more about it you should do some research, learn by yourself; is actually sometimes helpful because that way you learn more and can have a more constructive perspective of the idea.

I would love to have one of those. I use a LEKI hiking staff now. It has a replaceable rubber tip that hides a wicked tip. It's height is adjustable and the top knob can be unscrewed and used to hold a camera. These are still much classier than my current walking stick.

I have a theory on its origins, but it depends on its point of balance. As time progresses, people wanted to be armed, but walking around with a rapier was frowned upon. This could give a viable self defense weapon that they could use fencing techniques with and when questioned about it, can claim it's a gentleman's cane. Plenty of room to fancy it up too.
