As much as you fish in the same areas I think you should start tagging them and keeping track. Then you can write a paper on growth rates of Gar or the catfish. You can also make notes like fish swallowed hook and then if you recatch it you know it survived that encounter. It would be a great study on fish who live in a city system.

  • @wildlifefishingshow

I would have to target a single species in a very specific area for a few years, collecting way more data than I have time to collect on camera to actually get the proper info to support any kind of legitimate scientific paper (would also need to be conducted through a university to be properly peer reviewed). I'm honestly not qualified to write a legitimate scientific paper. HOWEVER I do love the idea of tagging fish, which is something I wish I had been doing already.

@@johnblossom8447 The paper is key. We need to know how fast these Alligator Gar are growing, along with how long they live. There is a formula you can use to calculate an estimate number of fish in a system by catching a certain number, tagging them, and then recatching and seeing how many are tagged. I did a science project on Crawfish in subdivison ditches and calculated the number of them using that method. That 300 pounder you just caught would certainly be evidence of long life span. You may be able to carbon date their scales?

If he was just a fisherman he. would have killed that 300 pound gar and taken it for official measurement and now hold an IGG all tackle world record. He is a Biologist or at least a naturalist first then a fisherman

@@johnnevin7759 I'm a conservation educator. I did study biology and I do have a professional background in conservation but my focus and training is in education, not field research. Very, very different. I'm not trained or qualified to do that properly. I would recommend you look at some of the amazing work done by Solomon David and his team at The Gar Lab for information like that.

@@johnblossom8447 True to that, a good fisherman knows the value of a fish's life and when to release. He is correct that I have a professional zoology and conservation background (I worked for the Houston zoo for a long time) but my area of expertise and professional training is in conservation education, not field research. I don't think many people realize that saying "naturalist" or "biologist" is kind of like saying "medical professional" in that there's a million different ways to approach that massive and diverse field with different skill and education requirements for different roles. I wouldn't want an dermatologist doing any heart surgeries and heart surgeons aren't developing vaccines, etc. My expertise has been in developing conservation based curriculum and teaching the public about wildlife and conservation, not conducting the type of detailed field research he seems to want.... (I know you understand all of this, I'm just kind of using this reply to expand on the difference for anyone else jumping in and wondering why I'm not writing scientific papers, lol). For anyone just jumping in here, you can't just conduct your own "study" and trust in the results without proper scientific training and having your work peer reviewed at every step. It's a monumental process that takes years. Proper scientific studies take entire teams of trained researchers years to complete because that's the only way to properly conduct a real study.

He had a fish on almost every one, but all that was left were the heads, and he knew it was turtles , because one was still on trying to eat on the head of one.

So glad the bait destroyer was not mutant plecos on the Atkins diet! Lol on a serious note in Europe and Russia. When a vehicle ends up in some rivers that hold massive catfish and they still contain the driver and passengers. The cats get inside the cars and eat the bodies. There are some news posts of as cars are being dragged out of the water the passenger compartment of the vehicle is mass of catfish still feasting on the remains. Nature is by necessity an opportunist.

I was thinking, I know you already do a lot in these videos, but it would be interesting if there was a way every time you get a positive reaction from a fish on your line you could flash the time, approximate air temperature, and approximate depth of the water your fishing. It would be interesting to see if any patterns emerge. I know when your bank fishing it can be difficult to know how deep the water is where your bait is, but even a half hearted guess might be helpful.

Good to see someone casting right handed and winding with the left instead of cast right swap over wind right. I'm left handed so I cast left wind right. Small thing but gives you quicker response using lures. Appreciate the circle hooks. I hear some US states are making their use mandatory in certain cases. I don't own anything but circles and a few long shank for our Whiting which are a fine table fish so I can justify the occasional deep hook. Being a more sedate older fisherman I like the " set and forget " circle hook method. Well done and good luck with the fishing and continued health. 😎👍

These guys are right, pick any section of a good bayou and you're going to have a shot at different fish. People always ask for exactly where I'm fishing in the video but the truth is I could film a decent video in most any area of the bayous here. The spots I pick often have more to do with filming and lighting requirements than they do with what fish are there.

I grew up in Houston and as kids we'd grab our cane poles hop on our bikes and fish anything from a drainage ditch to a pond with worms we dug up out of the dirt. We very rarely didn't catch something... Such a blast! Long before every kid had a phone glued to their hand 😉

Do you have a video where you show how to wet the hook on a gar with a circle hook? You said you don’t different than a catfish. I’ve noticed that circles hooks for me don’t work too well when fishing for fish that have a lot of teeth like gar - big northern pike etc . Would greatly appreciate a tutorial. Thank you .

To say it CANT be piranhas wouldn't be completely true. Not likely but, as I have recently learned, still possible. Here on LSU campus we have several lakes. Recently there have been quite a few Piranhas caught which we are assuming were someone's pet and got dumped in the lakes and began reproducing.

Seriously? How many? If I seriously drove the 5 hours over there do you think that a) I could get access to the lake and b) would have a likely chance of catching one?
