The ultimate sound compilation of the little four cylinder engine, the Nissan's Sr20det
The SR20DET is part of the SR family of engines from Nissan.
It is a popular inline four cylinder engine fitted into a variety of cars, generally the Nissan Silvia and 180SX. It also came in the Pulsar GTI-R, Nissan NX Coupe and the Nissan Bluebird. This engine replaced the CA18DE and CA18DET that originally powered the Silvia and 180SX. The CA18 was deemed too expensive to produce and no longer met Japanese emission standards, so it was replaced by the SR20. The SR, just like the out-going CA, was a turbocharged intercooled engine in top form. Nissan also produced a cheaper naturally aspirated version called the SR20DE. In the US and Canada, the Silvia and 180SX are both under the 240SX banner. USDM and Canada 240SX's come stock with the SOHC KA24E for earlier models, or the DOHC KA24DE for later models. Both are naturally aspirated engines producing 140 hp (100 kW) and 155 hp (116 kW) respectively. SR20DET engine swaps are becoming more commonplace due to the forced induction aftermarket additions available for the SR20DET. Many shops specialize only in SR20DET swaps.
The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:
SR - Engine Code Name
20 - 2.0 Liter Displacement
D - Dual Overhead Camshaft
E - Electronic Fuel Injection
T - Turbocharged
The Lack of the letter "D" on some of the engine identifications indicates a SOHC cylinder head.
The SR20DET was first produced in the Nissan Bluebird 2000SSS in transverse form.
However the RWD Nissan Silvia and Nissan 180SX produced in 1991 were built with a longitudinally aligned SR20DET, in which the "T" stands for turbo. Some of the 180SX's were released with the SR20DET while others had the naturally aspirated SR20DE.
The engine then went on to be used in the Nissan Avenir in 1995, the Nissan R'nessa in 1997, Nissan Presage in 1998 and Nissan Liberty in 1999,
Out of all the Nissan models produced with the SR20DET, the Silvia was the longest running model to use it. The S14 and S15 use a bigger turbocharger than the S13 models.
S13 Black top - Came from 180sx's post 94 (Garrett T25G turbo)
S13 Red top - Came from S13 Silvia and 180sx pre 94 (Garrett T25G turbo) 370cc injectors were used.
S14 Black top - 91-98 Silvias - Variable Cam Timing or VCT was introduced on the intake cam (Garrett T28 journal bearing turbo for Australian and European markets and Garrett T28 Ball Bearing turbo for the Japanese market) 370cc injectors were used.
S15 Black top - 99-02 Silvias. Same VCT as above, 6 speed manual transmission (Garrett Journal Bearing T28 for Europe and Australia and Ball Bearing T28 turbo for Japan)
480cc injectors were used and Intake manifold was redesigned

    I’m currently doing a jdm n/a sr20 in my 1985 Nissan 720..older than a hardbody lol 😂 all I need is a driveshaft and a high pressure fuel pump since the stock one was for a carburetor lol sr20 is the best engine weather it’s a vvl- sr20det or regular n/a...I’m going itbs on my pick up with some beefy tires.

    Damnn hahaha at 6:45 its sound exactly like my old setup on my s13 hatch (sr20det redtop gt25 tuned at 220whp) and now got gt35 top mount with external wastegate on the hood and got like 300-310whp low boost 420whp high boost hehe

    I have an s13 to but i have to say the best 4 zylinder engine is the cosworth engine from the Sierra and escort a friend a mine has one and pushes over 530whp on a stock block since 40 thousand miles with no issues

    1 the k series surpasses the Sr20 by far, then the 4g63, then maybe the Sr20. But the fact I'm from the states and your typical sr20 swap is about 3-4k in the states it's just an overpriced ancient 4 cylinder with a turbo, and rocker arms to break

    But the ve & vet are the SR20 evolution and get slept on. Yeah sr swaps are expensive but k series aren't 600 anymore either.

    Swaps are cheap, unless you’re having it done by someone else and especially a “famous” shop. Also, theres way too many SR’s and SR20’s to count. MOST are NOT roller rocker and the roller rocker versions are just as good as the non. Stick to you Honda’s. It took K-Series to come out and Nissan to basically say fuck any real focus on any 4cylinder performance platform and lets focus on V6’s for Honda to be better “by far” and it still whips that ass when you have a well tune and built SR versus anything you throw at it. Ntm, Nissan invented VVL first which inspired your VTec and we already had dual crossover, all this in the 80’s /90’s before Honda 😂 take this L bro. Someone who knows something hopped on. Stick to your Honda’s and hush up.

    They come 200-250 with turbo K20s come 200 na, and are bullet proof, I think k20s are the best 4 cylinders ever in my opinion, not hating on nissans at all

    Yeah K-series is the best engine with examples upwards 400hp N/A engines on race fuel. Let's also keep in mind that what's best changes depending on your location and what is readily available. I would bet that K-series parts are way more accessible around the globe than SR parts. I mean yeah, I love SR's and S-bodies and all that, even more than honda stuff. But are they the best engines ever? Naah.

    Cane Sugar I did get one. It was a 1989. Had the KA motor. It was a great to drive even with the problems it had. The rear springs had been cut or the rear shocks were blown so it bounced on the road and whenever you hit a bump on the street it bounced super hard. But on the smooth road the car was great. I liked how easy the engine bay looked to. It was a very simple design. Motor sounded good too. I’m not really a fan of 4 cylinder motor sounds but I liked it. It had some muffler on there but I don’t know what kind it was. There is so much more I can review about the car but this will become a long entry. So will summarize the whole car into this: it is a very sporty Honda. I found myself saying this so many times when driving. I would definitely recommend to get one 👍 I hope this was helpful

    Cane Sugar 4 cylinders are cool. Like they are great on gas. Lol. But the next car I will be getting is a infinitti G37. Coupe. I like how they look inside and out. Not going to modify it only change the wheels maybe and tinted windows. That’s about it. I’m not into 6 cylinders either. But the G37 has a V6 with about 300 HP so it should be kinda quick not too fast. I do like how the motor sounds tho. Will not be changing the exhaust with aftermarket. I like how it sounds stock. It took me a long time to decide on which car to buy for my next one and I think I made a good decision. I was planning on getting another F body camaro with a LS1 this time instead of the LT1 I had last time. I already had two Dodge Charger one with V6 and one with V8. Charger is a very nice big spacious car. But I love the V8 sound of a hemi. But I hate how much gas the hemi drink. I was going to get a brand new mustang with a V8 but I decided not to. Because I don’t think I want a car note. The mustang looks good on the outside and I like the inside but I don’t like the idea of having a car note. I was thinking of getting a GTO Becuz it has a LS2 or LS3 motor but I don’t really like the outside or the interior too much. But I like the motor and the way it sounds. I am thinking of buying a foxbody mustang in the future also. But as of now I think the G37 will suit me pretty well. A nice luxury car with some power.

    Everyone’s comparing engines that are at least 10 years newer, considering that the average SR is almost 30 years old shows how capable it is, a factory Sr20det car will gap a factory K series car, same goes for EJ cars. Not that this is a Chassis debate but either way .

    Cheaper than what? Or just in general? In general yes they're very cheap and parts are easily obtainable (as well as cheap), You can also find just about any bit of info no matter how obscure as they've been very popular choices for swaps for decades. You can get a s13 SR/trans for about 2 grand, a rolling shell for 1-2 grand (or get a nicer 240) bigger turbo (disco potato used for a few hundred, or a larger gt2871rs used? 500$+ maybe less, new ~1200$) piggyback tuner ~100$, wideband o2 sensor/gauge 200$, z32 tt MAF 100$, larger fuel pump ~200$, larger injectors ~300$ (550cc), cometic head gasket/arp head studs 200$, exhaust setup (you can spend ~400$ on a full 3 inch exhaust setup or you can spend thousands on an exhaust setup) and you're already looking at making about 300-320whp with the disco potato turbo very reliably (~350-360ish at the crank, pounds per horsepower, is about the same as a second gen viper gts), the gt2871rs ~ 400whp.     The legendary 4g63 is the 4 banger king! Hands down. No other makes power like a 4g63 especially in stock form, of course anything can make big power when built.

    @@videshsingh6754 what most people arent aware of or try to deny is the fact that the last time jett racing and Teknoztoyz raced in a side by side 1/4mile drag race it was TeknoToyz that went quicker and faster. And did it using a single turbo set up while jett racing were using a bi-turbo compound turbo set up. I cant wait to see the compound multi-turbo set SR in action. Shane T already said the engine is now making close to 3000hp. It remains to be seen if a 4g63 or k-series engine can do that.

    The One ka for the win ... 462 whp 411 wtq ... It's a beast, you punch it, it goes ... I am amazed by how many people come to my S14 and praise the ka turbo for how much power it has yet NOBODY does the ka, they all do the sr20 swap ... I guess nobody wants to get dirty ... They rather just swap it out

    Chase Postell I know this is 3 months late, but I think he’s referring to the rockers. VET I think eliminates those therefore isn’t a common problem versus the DET suffering from rocker problems

    V comes from fwd SR head variable timing on fwd sr20 were better than the rwd sr20s variable timing so sr20vet is stock block etc but fwd sr20 head converted to rwd sr20.

    Beside the variable timing, the main benefit of the sr20ve head is its much better flow capacity and a better combustion geometry, which improves knock resistance.

    Am aware the SR is a significant improvement over the CA, just that have read the latter shares some linage with the E and A engines which in turn share some distant relation to the improvements Nissan made to Austin-based engines. If there is a link between the E and A engines to the CA engines, then to what extent is the latter related to the SR? A similar question also arises on the link between the MA and CG/CR engines.

    4age 20v (black or silver), ej207/257, ka24de-T, 4g, and finally the 2.3T Lima... did you actually compare it to anything else? The ka is less detrimental, the EJ has more torque, and the Lima turbo block is over engineered to hell and can handle a metric shit load of boost.

    El zakura ran low 7 . That was 20 to 25 years ago no vtec , neo vvl ,vvti ,mivec etc...... with a dinosaur engine. 🏁

    Actually the SR20 is the last one I'm thinking of when its about the best 4 banger. It's was not exceptionally successful in motorsports, like the BMW M10 or the Opel C20xe It's not exceptionally strong no matter how well build, like the 4g63 it was not built for an extended time or in a huge amount like the VW flat 4 It's got a sound like any other 4 pot may be a slightly higher pitch, flat chested so to speak... Not like an EJ, a k20 or a C20xe who need extra silencers and restrictions to be road legal... And last but not least it never got any record for being whatever lightest, most torque per displacement, most efficient... It's an average engine, like that one in your neighbor's Camry just in way nicer packaging...

    K series is best 4bager in wolrd because in cheap, avaliable, is good for turbo, is unmatched in n/a (power over 550 hp) have good gas milage, is reliable, full of spare parts and sound is very good.. 4g63 and sr20 they are not so good..

    K24 engines are far better and more reliable with higher potential in power gains. A stock k24 can make 500 whp n/a reliably....You can find k24's for about $700- $800 as well. I do love SR's but they aren't reliable

    What are you talking about the sr20 is a very reliable engine. I've driven a DET as a daily and havent had any problems with them.
