Just keep talking about freedom from surveillance and how important it is and the tide will turn. Mention it as often as possible.

I see people on Reddit, Twitter, KZread and other social media platforms laughing at people who take privacy seriously. Most of my friends don't even know what is GrapheneOS and why am I using it instead of the software provided by the OEM even if I try to explain them. Their counter argument is "I do not do anything shady on internet, do not upload my private pictures or videos online and I have nothing to hide".

@@nikunjkhangwal I apologize! I should have been more specific. Apart from a few subreddits that focuses/prioritizes on privacy, most other subreddits bully people who are concerned about privacy. I was once part of Google Pixel subreddit but had to leave it due to extreme bullying towards privacy oriented people.

It's very frustrating to talk about privacy and why it matters with people who "have nothing to hide". Can give thousands of arguments and they will just respond, "If that happens", "That will never happen to us", "It's for safety, and if it can help catch bad guys I see no problem with it, I have nothing to hide".

People may laugh until they realise eventually what freedom has become. Also, most people don't have a clue about the extent to which their data is already actively used to track and analyse their activities.

@@saswatachakraborty No need to apologize You might be right. I'm more into Tech subreddits so I've seen more privacy related posts. It makes sense anything related to Google wouldn't care about privacy much.

I get strange looks when I pay **more** for a purchase by NOT applying for the store's credit card ... and when I refuse to divulge my phone number just to buy a pizza ... and when someone finds out I don't do Facebook or Instagram.
Loved the very end of this video! I tried to warn coworkers about a lot of this about 15 years ago. They looked at me like I was crazy. Reason I knew? I had friends that went through government funded classes at a Master's Degree level training on both digital surveillance & counter surveillance. * It's called Cyber-Corps.

Laughs in City of Systems of Systems. It’s already here and no one even knows when it was implemented…well I do but the majority of people don’t. They didn’t take their Security and Privacy seriously and because of that they will pay dearly.
Enemy of the State seemed so dark and dystopian when it came out. It pales compares to reality nowadays. 😬 Still a good movie.

Naomi, I have learnt a lot from your videos. Would love to see some of your videos geared toward countries like Australia for example, where we have to hand over 100 points of id to activate a SIM card, including prepaid (pay as you go). Where Voip numbers for mobiles (anonymously) seem non existent. Would love to find a more secure/private way to do this.

I could never articulate why privacy was important aside from the "closing the bathroom door" argument. This clearly articulates points in a way that helps people see what Snowden was saying is true. I've also found that there are better ways to introduce people into privacy things like switching browsers or using a VPN that don't detract from their current quality of life
Hi NBTV, could you look into and do a video on TVs collecting data and what they do with it? Was surprised that even expensive TVs come with ads that cannot be turned off. I’ve heard before that underpriced TVs like Vizios etc. are so because they are subsidised by this data collection/ad revenue. But I didn’t realise this collection is so even with the higher priced premium models from LG, Samsung etc. Surely they must know what ads to serve to whom by collecting data? Otherwise it’s less valuable to advertisers? What are they collecting? Could they even collect what is appearing on screen, which is more problematic when users use these TVs as computer monitors? Are there any workarounds or safeguards? Thank you!

Privacy being eroded is a concern but some people just don't give a crap. No matter how much I convenced people to not buy a smart TV because it's rigged with spyware and advertisements, they still bought the thing anyways. Gave it a DNS request check and its pinging netflix even though its not being used.

And the shift of many businesses toward cashless only payment methods only further erodes privacy. Credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc. all enable tracking and data harvesting of everything you do and everywhere you go.
Moustache or beard... Hmm. Thanks again Naomi. I've just done a full erase of my computer and carefully setting it up with minimal programs and settings following your suggestions. It isn't easy but some decisions have to be made. I'm avoiding "proprietary" and "cloud" and hope I don't regret it.

When Verizon (or others) sends me an email stating when my payment is due, and exactly how much it is, they is sharing my information with google, yahoo, government and others. It is a violation of privacy. "That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men," U. S. Declaration "Life, liberty, and property do not exist because men have made laws. On the contrary, it was the fact that life, liberty, and property existed beforehand that caused men to make laws in the first place." Bastiat The ONLY legitimate function of the Congress it to secure unalienable rights, NOT get rich from cronyism with corporations, protecting corporations from competitors and customers.

Have to to think on some data patterns that could be used as messages to them that could either get them to stop or make them laugh. About 25 years ago my girlfriend at the time had a guest from the UK. We were sitting around talking about a news article that claimed that the British government was going through their citizens' emails without due process. The visitor from the UK was disturbed. I was horrified. I encouraged him to move to the US where we (supposedly) had laws to prevent that kind of activity. However, my girlfriend had no problem with it. "I don't have anything to hide." Yes, she actually used those words. I pointed out that even if the government was benevolent, and even if all they use information like this for was to fight crime, and even if she had nothing to hide, all it would take is for some government agent to take something benign the wrong way and then start connecting dots that have nothing to do with each other. The next thing she'd know she'd find herself the focus of a criminal investigation. She said, "Nobody is dumb enough to not see the truth." "You are." Probably not my best choice of words. Thank you, Naomi, for being more eloquent.
30 years ago we lived without Internet and were, supposedly, free. So how are you claiming now that "Internet with surveilance" , which we don't have to use, makes us less free? The main problem is that, whoever we give our info to, now posts it on Internet, instead of keeping it in their office - any ideas how to fight that?

To be fair, there is one benefit from reduced online privacy (as opposed to direct physical privacy), and that is that narcissistic behavior can be punished by peers. The reason the internet is more toxic than in-person social interaction is that, in-person, a narcissist saying something completely offensive is likely to be punched (or at least ostracized and not invited to any more parties) by the local community when they inevitably goad the wrong person(s). The anonymity on the internet allows toxic narcissistic behavior (internet trolls) to go overwhelmingly unchecked. A counter argument is that narcissists are entitled to free speech as well, even when the speech has arguably no obvious societal benefit.

You are misplacing blame when you say the Internet is at fault. The Internet is merely infrastructure to move data. The end stations, operating systems, software choices and browsers are the problem.
I need to defend the intelligence of frogs against these endless unwarranted attacks.In actual fact, they will get uncomfortable as the water they're in becomes ever warmer and hop out when they become fed up. Not to conflate immediate mortal threats with lesser ones, but we are notorious for taking no action in the face of ever more sinister developments, as you always point out. A smear campaign against amphibians serves no purpose.😉 On an entirely different subject, a compelling argument can be made that China and Russia, which are respectively literally and effectively one party states, are taking necessary steps to avoid the gradual transformation into corporate states that most of the west has moved very far toward becoming. The lot of the average citizen in the former two countries is improving while ours is declining. The dangers you warn of are unquestionably real but theworld is annoyingly complex.
