DON'T Connect Your Phone To Your Car!

Ғылым және технология

Modern cars are a privacy nightmare.
It's worse than you realize. In this video we dive into all the types of data your car is collecting about you: from video footage, microphone recordings, location data, biometrics, all the way to files/contacts/photos ingested from your phone!
00:00 Cars are NO place for a private conversation!
02:11 What data is our car collecting?
05:41 Video footage
06:16 Microphones
08:09 Location
08:40 There's a SIM card in your phone, sending off all your data!
10:01 Telematics
10:56 Sensors: Capturing weight, emotions, etc
11:10 DON'T CONNECT YOUR PHONE TO YOUR CAR!
13:00 Who is getting access to our data?
14:06 This is a huge problem
This is the first video in a series we're doing on car privacy. Later in the series we examine:
- how easy it is to hack modern cars
- trackers in cars that you had no idea existed
- the perverse incentives that drive companies to collect as much data about us as possible
- the history of when this all started
- dangers of used cars: the previous owner of your car might still have access to all your car’s remote features, tracking tools, and cameras!
- how to wipe your own information and location history from your car before you sell it
- how to opt out of this collection and better protect yourself
We really need to get a conversation going around car privacy, and increase awareness. It’s so important we push back against the normalization of these practices, starting now.
Part 2 in our Car Privacy series:
How to wipe car data: • How To Wipe Your Car Data

I recently sold my 1969 Chevelle wagon. Before that, my '68 Camaro, before it was stolen i was running into problems finding parts. The power steering bracket was impossible to find. New or used. My uncle ended up welding one for me from scratch. I was so mad when the thief ended up with my hard to get part. But then again, they probably put on headers, which would have eliminated the power steering, which breaks my heart even more thinking that bracket ended up in a trash heap. Sorry i went off topic. All this talk of old cars, i do miss them terribly, ...the sound, the feel, the simplicity, the smell,( lol). but i don't miss the long braking distance.

This reminds me of the news report I was reading some years ago. It was about a guy who caught his smart TV collecting data from his private network, and whatever was connected to that network off into the ether. Even when the TV was off, and even when he opted out of that service. For this reason, none of my smart TVs are connected to the internet, and their wifi are turned off. It also stopped me from getting a Ring doorbell camera, an Alexa, and even an Xbox 1. My car isn't new enough to have any of the features described here, and the Bluetooth is all but useless since I can't stream music to the radio, so I've never connected to it. My mobile device provides all of the data they're gong to get from me.

I had a 2020 Grand Cherokee stolen from in front of my home 2 years ago. With all this terrific tracking and data collection technology, you’d think that the vehicle could be located. I logged into my “Guardian” tracker within 20 minutes of its disappearance and it had already been disabled. The police absolutely did nothing, not even coming over at all. The insurance company mailed a me check and I mailed back both key fobs and title. It’s unbelievable that a 3 ton vehicle can evaporate like a fart in the wind, never to be seen again. I firmly believe that there are people somewhere on this planet aside from the thieves, who know exactly where that Jeep is and who now possesses it, whether it’s in North America or Africa, including camera feeds.

Take what they need an leave the rest to the other volunteers with similar Mopar vehicles. Not just Cherokee. I bet there is a Chrysler 200/300 somewhere with your engine in it and probably the seats. The diff is probably in a trackhawk or challenger someone blew up doing burnouts.

I'm assuming that your stolen Jeep had push button start??? Anything with that feature is easy to steal. We have a Jeep Cherokee and we've never had it get stolen. My advice is to cover up the VIN code in the driver's side window in the dashboard. Also cover up the one in the driver's door. We cover both VIN numbers with cardboard and have never had a problem. Thieves can literally generate a throw away fob to disable the security system with nothing more than the car's VIn numbers. It takes about 5 minutes to do it, especially when the vehicle has push button start feature.

I bought my vehicle new in 1996. If the cassette deck transmits information, so be it. I have no cellular phone anyway. Where I live, they are worthless. I found the vehicle is EMP proof, though that is not why I bought it. It was a Ln experiment the Canadian and American Navy did in 1996. I got curious and went to visit one at a showroom. I found it to be so attractive that I went home with it. She is still with me today. Everything is manual on it, including lights, transmission, and brakes. She is such beautiful spartan perfection.

Most of these are theoretical issues. Most cars are not recording your audio or sending you data to the cloud. The amount of wireless data involved would be prohibitively expensive. Also, the moment you buy a car, the car companies already know pretty much everything about you, like your address, where you work, your income, etc. There's not much incentive to spend lots of money to track you going to work, the grocery store, movies, etc. Aside from legal issues, most of the data will be not useful from a marketing perspective.

You're right, they are likely not sending video/audio data (most of them), as that would be alot of data, but the tracking and usage info im sure is sent.. but through your phone.. that way the User is "paying" for the data transmission, probably without knowing it. Most of that data they dont need instantly. So they could also follow the setting to 'wait till its on Wifi' that way the transmission speed is less noticeable.

Don't connect your phone or use any of the apps available for it. A friend who's an FBI agent told me that. Don't use on star, etc. There's really no reason to have all those things anyway. It's not like you're ever far from a city or people, unless you drive to Vegas... Wait, yeah, even then you're never far from any place. Why do we need on star? It still won't stop a car jacker, or alert you that someone is following you. Those things will depend on his old fashioned common sense and keeping aware. Nothing is fool proof, but staying alert is key to most situations. In my opinion, all those extra doodads can reduce your awareness to your surroundings since you're relying on that crap to keep you safe. I'm just saying.

There is an object in all vehicles dating back to 90s maybe earlier known as the black box. It collects data just before an accident. Speed g forces when brakes are applied if at all lights when the airbags deploy when the car finally comes to a stop etc. whenever the Insurance adjuster looks at the vehicle for damage. They also collect the data from the black box.

  • @WhiteWolfos

    @WhiteWolfos

    5 ай бұрын

@@wrenchaholic_ the black box is the least of your worries because it is pulled for investigations only during an accident, defect etc. Some manufacturers don't let insurance companies have it even like with Tesla. Really it is passive collection like OnStar, app services, phone services etc that is more concerning. Atleast with a phone you have more control where the device let's you disable permissions but it is usually not the case with the car. Imo, I like to use a spare phone or preloaded USB for music. You can also install a tablet center console to your car which you can then control permissions on Android. Ofc it is more work than the standard equipment and in the future at 2026 the cars are required to have remote kill switches, so it might even be illegal if you take out the center console and it messes with the switch.

One may say; "Thankfully I have a vehicle that can't collect, or send data", but some information is still collected, even with a "dumb" car. I remember reading an article in the early 2000's about an accident regarding a corvette involved in the crash. The driver was almost cleared of the charges, that is until an officer investigating the crash learned about the cars "black box" which set the precedent in investigations moving forward. This "black box" contained just enough data to prove that he was speeding right before the crash.... The crazy thing is this "black box" was meant to be a diagnostic tool for the airbag system. All cars have this "black box" nowadays, if it has airbags, ABS, stability control, or any driver aid, telemetry data is collected, and stored in those little computers in various places inside of the car

Actually, this consideration started to be discussed with Orwell's1984, and was predicted back when the personal computer became a thing. Yeah, maybe the masses have become aware too little, too late, but the real thinkers were warning about all of this in the earliest days. I remember a man who worked on Time/Life computers back when they were filling entire floors of buildings with one computer. He helped me cannibalize some of his old PC's to make one of my earliest computers, and he warned me that he'd never connect a computer he cared about to the internet. Obviously, like most of us, I didn't listen. Most of us knew we were opening the door to all of this when we gave our fingerprints and images to smart phones. We made a conscious decision not to care for the fun and convenience of our devices.

This is such an important privacy topic today and needs to be talked about! The general population, I believe, is so obsessed with "apps" because they provide that instant gratification due to the sense of control, power and to some extent, importance (because they're doing something or making something happen). The natural extension of the "app" is to what we do everyday; drive. I've often told people, I don't want to drive a laptop or a phone and have never connected one to any vehicle I've owned. Integrated head or infotainment units get replaced and antennas get disconnected (hard wired music is all I need) and I'll use stand alone (unregistered) GPS units (only if I don't know where I'm going). Even these steps likely don't stop all tracking but it's a start...Thanks Naomi; you've got one of the best channels on YT!

This is a good summary of car privacy issues. I help ensure my car privacy by driving a 2004 beater. No Bluetooth, no cellular connectivity. There's a wireless door lock remote that can be intercepted and cloned, but I think the street value of my car is not that appealing to the underworld. There is the engine computer that stores some driving data. I like your channel and I think you're on the right track but I fear that, in the long run, most consumers will trade privacy for convenience.

The reality is, there's probably no stopping this. It's to the government's advantage for this tech to exist, too, so they won't pass any laws that protect consumers. At the conclusion of the 90 days they ask if you`d like to stay on the monitoring program indefinitely, that was a hard 'no!`.

Just now running Inssider, I can see an Audi with a wifi hotspot on. As for connecting your phone to a rental car or van, don't do it, it's a very bad thing as they download a copy of all your contacts off your phone onto the vehicle. I had 6 rentals through my work and 3 had multiple people's contact details stored on the inboard computer, one had too many so I had to delete all of them in the end due to the constant error messages popping up everytime I started the van. Also use a faraday holder for your keyfob, so easy to steal the connection between the key and car, in a matter of seconds a car can be stolen. It's becoming more and more of a problem worldwide. The days of hotwiring are long gone now.

There is no auto sales contract which explicitly gives dealers consent to listen to private speech or conversations, so if they do so, they are violating law. California is a “two-party consent” state, meaning that it is illegal to record a conversation without the consent of all parties involved. So if you want to record a conversation in California, you must inform all parties involved in the conversation and receive their consent before recording. Consent to one party does not extend to all other parties nor to all future conversations or speech. Eventually someone will sue and win. It just may take a while.

The buyer may well have to agree with the privacy policy or the unit will not function as it has to be constantly listening to operate.
