Good job, but when she says "anyone", that's far from accurate. It's shocking to find out how few people can even plan a route using a map. And sleuthing out locations is next level after getting basic concepts down. It's an accumulation of related skills on top of intelligence, interest, and time. I'd put the odds at 1:1000 to 1:10,000 any random person could accomplish this on demand, and of those who can, I think you'd be hard pressed to find one with bad intentions. So, back when I was doing truck repairs, I once found a driver lost in the US with nothing more than an intersection, house color, and a list of three states he *might* be in (he wasn't sure). It really doesn't take much info to find someone, and we all got *really* good at it in my department because the sheer number of broken down truckers with NO idea where they were and couldn't get the GPS working to save their life.

Some People have never seen a Geoguesser in action, "A Shingle beach, a Douglas Fir, Camera is facing away from the Sun around Mid-day, Two mountains in the distance have snow but the people are wearing light clothing" - and they're away . . . For some reason I once set-out to Locate a video of a performing cat on a sea-shore; the Tree-type got me within a 1000km, then angle of Sun, and apparent near-mid-day, versus coast-angle got me a coast, then an Inlet and some distant buildings and shape of bay eliminated very many places, Height of the stone wall above the ocean along with sun-angle suggested a North-East going high head-land - it goes on : I found the location in less than 45Min and Geoguessing isn't even my hobby.

Great video. Shared with the wife... as a Canadian... who is too nice... this all feels dystopian. If the world becomes a kinder place... there is nothing to fear. I wonder the percentage of people who felt DOXED when the Phone Book would mail out everyone's updated Name and Number to a public listing?

Crazy how we thought that turning location data off for photos was the solution. When it's really step one of five. Protecting our safety takes a good bit of knowledge and a lot of diligence.

I have been telling my parents since 2012 to not post me on Facebook. I just thought it was the right thing to do, fast forward they realized I was right and can't even look at me in the face and accept they were wrong. You can post online but be extremely careful when you do so.

I have had this level of paranoia since the internet was newsgroups. I went all in on social media when it was new, realized the dangers, and dumped all of it. I don't have much to lose, so it all means a lot to me.

I'm far less worried about some individual using this info. What are governments and corporations going to do with this info. That's far more concerning, since they will do things retroactively.

Mine was stolen from the state. I have medical assistance and the state of NY uses a third party to handle all their Medicare etc….

Learned not to post personal info and pictures years ago. Never understood why people thought it was a good idea to get involved with social media and even using their real names and selfies.

There’s some scary people out there. I had a stalker from high school into college and this man found me because someone posted a video of me at a house party on Facebook. It was truly one of the most terrifying times of my life.

I think this is eye opening for all of of us, to say the least.

I see what you did there! yeah, it surely takes a fair bit of, "cold reading" too, from time to time.

When people first starting putting up pictures on social media I was really struck by it's being an invasion of the privacy of anyone in those pictures who did not consent to have their image and activities shared publicly. People may be foolish for sharing so much information about themselves, but they are often sharing lots of information about other people as well.

@@lepotdefleur9906 I get that it's allowed if its in public, but no one is (should be) posting security footage on social media. If I, a private citizen, go to a party or a bar, I would prefer not to have a bunch of pictures of it posted. There isn't a sharp line between public and private.

Great topic... Posting vacation photos while you're traveling is another thing; photos revealing you're clearly not home... For those people with closer enemies than friends or friends with addiction problems, which is exceedingly common. Much crimes comes from people we know or near that circle of influence rather than random strangers on the Internet.

When I used to be a order follow for a organization back in my 20s. I'd used get paid to view photographs and write things down to get personality information about a individual, and yes locations to.

yes see it all the time, so many just do random selfies all the time and not at all concern what should be private in that photo. hopefully time will tell.

Just watch GeoWizard's channel. He often will find locations within a handful of meters. His OSint when it comes to maps and Streetview is next level. He isn't the only one, but he is so good. Turn off geotagging in media too. :)

i was in greece last oct and posted a random picture of the bay area to an german image board. no signs or anything revealing to see, just a pier and some boats. took them less then one hour for someone asking if it's the specific pier, which was right.

This whole thing about privacy and controlling same is akin to chasing our tail and at worst is similar to barking at the wrong tree. We are just complicating our lives and govt is enjoying this by muddying the water further. Everything happening up-to someone getting hold of you pic or your address must be agreed to be as inconsequential. What you need, only need is protection from any harm which the govt must ensure. That is it. Nothing more, nothing less.

Watch people play Geoguesser, those people are insane.

And they mostly impose a rule on themselves of not using reverse image search. I like to follow along, take a screenshot of the image, crop out what I think might be a recognisable landmark in the image, and do a reverse image search on that. Most of the time I manage to find the location much quicker than they do by cheating/breaking that rule of the game. Bad actors will not care about that rule.

Certain Browser extensions can read and interpret the metadata in a picture or photos.

Girl, it bums me out that you didn't mention specifically what revealing metadata is stored in a photo. The most important one imo is EXIF data. EXIF data was how the McAffee guy got caught. Yes, the guy that McAffee Antivirus is named after.

A friend wouldn't post photos because of metadata. I showed him how to open his photo on a pc, make a screen shot and paste it into Paint. Then use the screen shot as his photo. This way the metadata was removed. Several different Lady friends I had to show them how much info their photos had in them by showing them exactly where the photo was taken. Some showed where they worked and one was exactly where she lived. They were shocked at what could be found and changed how they posted photos. One I showed her Google Earth photos of where she lived. Be careful out there!

did you know, there's exif editors out there as well? taking a screenshot of a picture is only one level below photographing the screen for a copy of that image. this brings us back to audio cassette dubbing days (where even the music industry said that it's okay to make such copies; after three times, the quality gonna be so bad that this person gonna just buy the original instead, lol.)

Photos are irrelevant, when almost everyone's full name, address, email, and phone numbers are searchable online. That's how I do genealogy on people who are still alive. I also use Facebook, because if a person doesn't blab everything in the world about themselves, one of their friends will. Very few people are not on the internet. If you have any utilities in your name, your information can be online. My photos don't have location information. I have a cellphone only for photos and games. It has no phone number, minutes, or even wifi turned on, so there can't be any location information. My older photos are either from an old digital camera or scanned from paper photos. So I don't add any more information to the internet about me, but there is plenty out there already. If the internet had just started, perhaps this video would be more relevant, but the horse has already left the barn.

Even if you're super conscious about the information that you share now, what has been made public before will never be forgotten. (looks back at 13 yo me when i first got access to the internet)

This could apply to regular non digital photos also, correct?

they don't contain meta data. and they aren't online for everyone to see!! (but if you send this guy an "analog" picture, he can also look for clues in it, yes.) edit: okay, most of them contain the date of development; and some even the date of the picture taken. also, when you've like a polaroid picture, it indirectly contains information about the device being used. but they aren't as exhaustive like for digital ones (no gps coordinates, and precise device information. because using expensive equipment can be an indicator of being a more "valuable target.")

I have always put fake data, pictures and background for a laugh. I post fake meta data too. Don't forget if you draw over something and post a photo, it can be undone. It's best to zoom on a pic and screenshot and post that.

No offense homie but if someone wants to get into your house, they are going to get into your house. Locked doors are only a psychological barrier. There are no limits on what criminals will do to get what they want. I knew a lady who literally took a chain saw to the side of a garage so she could steal some stupid big appliance.

Geez you're going to be disappointed if you bothered to track where I go. LOL.

Oh let's not forget the other clue in selfies which gives away the location: the fact that almost every one the people posting them, tells you where they are. Not only is it not a secret, it is typically part of the point of selfies.

@@dcarbs2979 well, I simply try to familiarize you with reality. when-I don't even know-but maybe two billion people worldwide and probably up to hundred fifty million Americans are using TikTok, then it's highly unlikely (and unrealistic) that you can successfully convince them of not using this platform. therefore, education is the much, much more sensible approach. also, Facebook is owned by a US company, yet they still sold their user data to Russian agents for a targeted political campaign. so, it's pretty much all platforms that you shouldn't use if selling your information is of a concern to you.

Don't post photos or just slap a black box around you.
