Confronting their history and the frayed states of their relationships among the people who know and love them best, they ultimately reconnect in hysterical and emotionally affecting ways amid the chaos, humor, heartache and redemption that only families can provide- driving us insane even as they remind us of our truest, and often best, selves.

Screenplay: Jonathan Tropper, Based on the novel "This is Where I Leave You" by Jonathan Tropper

Does anyone else think this is one of the most underrated films ever made? Its absolutely heartwarming and hillarious whilst being heartbreaking at the same time. Honestly one of my favourite films. It also has one of Adam Drivers best performances he is hysterical in this movie.

I never understood why the critics didn't like this movie. It was a really heartwarming film about love and loss. Like, really heavily themed in the loss category. Plus it doesn't hurt that the cast was simply amazing. Nobody felt out of place, the chemistry between the family felt very real (as open as they were with everything), not to mention the supporting cast (Timothy Olyphant showing some great range in his acting chops here). And of course the funniest bits had me in tears at some points. Seriously, if you haven't seen this movie, it's a pretty good watch.

I don't like it because I expected a comedy from the trailer and that's not what I got in the end. It doesn't help I've seen nearly a dozen movies about awkward family gathering over holiday/funerals. I don't really care about the family drama thing.

This is a really beautiful movie. You get the emotions and the message hand in hand with many laughs (and a great cast). It shows you that despite all of life's battles and tough roads and all of your personal imperfections, you will be okay in the end, and you will always have people who will stick through the yucky stuff with you. I highly highly recommend it for anyone who has not watched it.

Love the sadness and the calm feelings I have while watching it. Me being like: I feel you dude. This movie was there for me like the people in the movie were there for each other. And there is a hazy beauty behind a certain kind of sadness that says, there you are, at the lowest point of your life and nothing can hurt you anymore.....kind of make you feel invincible and not anxious anymore. Maybe that s what s beautiful about being sad. (btw, being sad is not being desperate. Being desperate is before sad...and being desperate usually freaks people out.......)

@@chainsawteddybear I'm a woman in her early 30s, mid-size town, living in her own apartment. I feel like Judd at the ending of this movie, driving off to Maine -- that I can make a new life. :) I've only recently found some stability after my 20s being up and down - I've got a job I like, and letting go of past grudges in relationships. I've got a big extended family, grew up close with them, then when adulthood came around we couldn't see each other nearly as much with work and kids. I think that might be why this movie connects with me so much -- it's a big family in one place again, with the past in common but a present that can conflict. I've latched onto this movie so much because every character has a realistic problem, and there's parts of each I can relate to. I felt like Judd for a time, especially (cheated on, unclear future, hopeless). I find a lot of comfort in its message that, yeah, life is messy but it can get better and there's family. Again, I feel like Judd driving onto that highway to Maine. How about you? What's the answer to your own question? I'm really interested in why you've connected to this movie too!

The first trailer for the Shawn Levy directed movie has arrived and it hits every cliché on the dramedy branch. Based on the novel by Jonathan Tropper, the story follows a huge family who came together to bond/mourn following a major death, and of course, learn stuff about life. So this means you'll get a scene of two people sitting on a roof having an important intimate conversation, boob jokes, sex being heard by lots of people on a baby monitor and other similar scenes you've seen in other movies over the years. Maybe it all adds up to something more?

Manuel Gomez That's what they said about The Mortal Instruments last year and it flopped on it's face. Doesn't help that Maze Runner looks like yet another YA adaption (because it is) featuring dumb annoying teens. Meanwhile, A Walk Among the Tombstones actually looks good.

You sound like one of those dumb teens defending a movie that's probably going to be complete shit. Fact: The director is a graphics artist with almost no directing background outside of a handful of shorts. Fact: The screenwriter has 0 screenplay experience. Fact: The actors are a bunch of nobodies who played minor supported parts in everything they were in except for Dylan O'Brien who is a co-star for the MTV show "Teen Wolf". Fact: The movie is based on a Young Adult "Novel". Just another film trying to be Harry Potter and Hunger Games. Lastly, Maze Runner hardly looks complex, visually or otherwise.

Manuel Gomez Transformers got 3 sequels and Grown Ups got a sequel. The new TMNT movie is already getting a sequel. Shitty movies get sequels and if Maze Runner gets a sequel, I will not give two shits.

Manuel Gomez that a bunch of dumb teens went to see a mediocre movie based on a shitty YA novel on opening day.

Much better than I expected, the one thing that made it bad is (SPOILER ALERT) what their mother's relationship with their lady neighbour was. It just defeated the purpose of the loss of the father, and the whole mourning him phase, it felt squeezed into the story.

This Is Where I Leave You instills in your mind that Family big or small will have your back no matter what and each of them can be the answer to your own issues and life misteps. Hillary and her kids, Wendy to Judd, Judd to Wendy, Wendy to Paul, Paul to Philipp and so on. I also love how the it was portrayed that growing up the Altman Kids always have each others' backs and then prolly drifted away when they became adults but got to experience that same love when they all had to go back home. It's heartwarming, funny, and full of lessons. You sould watch it.

This film ranks in one of my top 5. This movie doesn't seem like it's from 2014. Feels like 2007. There's such a nostalgic feeling of movies from the early 2000s. Such an innocent everything is fine feeling to it. This movie feels this way. Amazing cast. Good movie. 9/10 for me.

I don't care that critics thought this was mediocre, this movie has everything I like in it and I've spent hours watching it. If you don't mind some predictability and also want a movie about dysfunctional adult sibling relationships without it being super dramatic, this is it. It's worth giving a chance to.
