This Is What Winning Looks Like (Part 1/3)

"This Is What Winning Looks Like" is a disturbing new documentary about the ineptitude, drug abuse, sexual misconduct, and corruption of the Afghan security forces as well as the reduced role of US Marines due to the troop withdrawal. In part one, we see just how chaotic and hopeless the situation is in Sangin, one of the most violent towns in Afghanistan.

A little bit of context : After D-Day and the few years of the vietnam war, the US military realized that most soldiers did not use their weapons at all, and that most of those who did, did not aim to kill. This was considered a problem, and to adress this issue, the US military devised a doctrine called "zone fire" which encouraged soldiers to shoot in the general direction of the threat, in order to deshinibit the use of weapons. Takeaway 1 : there was a time americans were shy about using their guns. Takeaway 2 : there was an american doctrine telling the soldiers to do sort of what the afghans do.

the frustration endured by stueber & also major brezler almost certainly gave those two men PTSD, you don't have to be in combat for war to fuck you up. Brezler warned against an insider attack against the pedophile police chief and was courtmartialed for revealing classified documents & was almost tried for treason as well. Afghanistan is a frustrating and mentally taxing place for Americans and us Canadians [while we were there] let alone, a frustrating war. these men are stronger than you or I could ever dream of being. their levels of restraint are at the very least, legendary.

When I was in college 2011, there was a veteran in my class. For whatever reason, he agreed to answer questions about his time. I asked him "Do you think that any of our efforts will last when we leave". He said "no I don't think they will" and the whole class went silent. Looking back I regret asking such a pointed question but it taught us the truth about these conflicts. Needless to say, I was not surprised when the government collapsed.

It may have been a pointed question but it was a necessary one, you had the guts to ask the right question so to speak. I was with 9th ESB in 2011 when they made improvements to a road near Marjah and we lost a few people because of it; I wasn't directly involved with improvements but I was supporting from nearby FOBs. I talked to an infantryman around 2015 and he said that it became so filled with IED's that they had to destroy it on their way out which essentially made the whole operation pointless in the end. We knew this was likely to happen back then but we had to grin and bear it because "hearts and minds" and the leadership wanted their medals.

The US didn't leave SAMs this time (there being no reason to do so) and the rest of the gear is obsolete like HMMWV junk light trucks. It has symbolism to Bubba but the US has no need for that gear which is why it got FMSed in the first place. JLTV is the replacement for HMMWV and remedies the faults of a weak NATO liaison vehicle never intended for direct combat and very bad at surviving attack (as demonstrated from Mogadishu to present day).. I actually DO remember and have studied both wars. Operation Cyclone was a bargain against the Soviet Union and carried out by competent operatives. What should never have happened is "nation building" which is a direct assault on local culture hence doomed to failure.

@Hue Wong No it's not. Go read ISIS propaganda magazine that they made public to everyone. They gave 10 reasons we will hate and kill you. Number #1 was (I'm paraphrasing): "Understand that no matter what you do we always have and always will hate you. We will always seek to kill you because it is His will to kill all non-believers. There is nothing you can do to change this."

What's really disturbing is that you realise that the situation in Afghanistan is larger than both the Marines and the Afghans they are trying to teach. The Afghans are hopelessly demotivated because they don't see the sense in whatever the Americans are trying to get them to do, and rightfully so. The Americans were on their way out and everyone knew this. It would have taken 50+ years of American help to get Afghanistan anywhere.

@@kzap70 Actually, Afghanistan has an illiteracy rate of 80-90% because of its extreme poverty, which is largely due to foreign relations with Pakistan (Pak and Taliban keep AFG poor so AFG has no choice but to rely on marijuana and opium as its major productions, of which the Taliban and Paki government reap all the reward).... The nomadic nature of much of its people also complicates things, and the radical islam mixed with a constant warring atmosphere since 1979 hinders overall education as well. Afghanistan was actually doing quite well for itself, culturally and economically speaking, up until the mid-1970's, when radical Islam and the Soviet Union both thought they should have Afghanistan... Ultimately, the US saw the Soviet-Afghan thing as a good way to totally fuck the USSR, and made a bad choice to side with radical Islam to "aid them in their struggle against Communism".... Admittedly, the radicals back then weren't as radical as they are now (or when we respectively took them out, etc), but it was still a not-great idea... Anyway, Afghanistan due to these factors has devolved to the state seen in this video, and it's kind of disgusting... In fact, according to locals, it's absolutely no different than under Taliban rule, once the Americans aren't watching... Life under the ANA/ANP/etc. is just like under the Taliban, except they're called the "Afghan National Police" and etc. now... Oh also, when that PB just walks off a day or two later and is never seen again? Yeah, that's stupid common with the native forces... They'll come in, they won't like someone or something, and they'll just fuck off out to nowhere, usually with their gear.... And you see how they took the barricade down and sold the motherfucker? Yeah, they do that shit all the time, too; absolutely no foresight. Either that, or they know they won't put up any sort of resistance, and instead just want the money for hash, opium, and pot seeds.....

The Afgan police are like children. No descipline, smokes pot. Tell them to shave and cut their hair. it's useless. How about getting Afgans from other regions who are more disciplined? No wonder Bush went to Iraq in a hurry. This show is all about how bullshit the Afgans are. What a mess. Obama is saying let's move the Americans out? Then why did you go there in the first place? Mission accomplished? Then you attacked Iraq and Libya then Syria? Just to destroy their civilization then leave like what you did in Vietnam? Why? Can you please stop acting as police of the world. Fix America first instead of destroying infrastructue in other countries. Now Obama wants war to explode in the China Sea between the Phil and China. Just leave them alone please and enough of these wars. Let these countries mend their own problems. You have your own problems in the US like drugs, gangs, criminalities and your prisons are full. Solve your internal problems before trying to teach other countries how to solve theirs.

I literally cant even imagine how that must feel. I do know a lot of people who 60ish years ago went through a war that was really rotten like this too. Theyre still around, just try talking to some of them if you feel alone, cuz civilians like me will never truly get it and theyre creeping up in age.

As lolwtfbbq said they wouldnt last a day.........and didnt. Once the US Military withdrew shortly after this, ISIS steamrolled the ASF, to the point where they literally threw down their weapons and fled. Compared to most civilized armies, ISIS and Taliban pose little threat to an AC-130 or Apache. But they strike fear into the defenseless locals, who barely know how to use their weapons effectively.
