This is what I thought while skydiving - The 12 Days of Newness | Ep 10

MY FIRST SKYDIVE: Helen gave me a skydive for my 40th Birthday, but the business went bust during Covid, so I didn’t get to jump. A few years later I decided to give it a go. It’s not really my thing in some respects- spending so much money on a quick thrill. But I also love the idea of freefall. This is my experience of being strapped to a man I’ve never met, and plummeting to earth.

    The line about expensive ordinary thinking is so beautiful to me. Like, you can go and do all this luxurious, privileged stuff and indulge. That's pretty rad. But staying in the clouds literally and metaphorically isn't forever feasible, responsible and most importantly, not what you really want to be doing. How you came back down to earth to your probably relieved mother and delightful daughter illustrates that so nicely and honestly inspires me to find/create something like that for myself one day. The way you found the story (as I understand it) about the beauty in everyday life around a damn skydive is surprising & uplifting. Now i'm in a good mood as I go sit in the library again and look at a screen i.o. to become a therapist one day xD Thanks a lot for existing Beau, greetings from switzerland

    Agree that it wouldn't be good or practical to spend all your time in the clouds, but the opposite is also true - it's not good or healthy to spend all your time thinking about nothing but work, demands and responsibilities. Whether it's skydiving, hiking, reading a book or just sitting in solitude contemplating the mysteries of life, having periodic escapes from the ordinary stresses of life is key to maintaining perspective and a healthy outlook. We're going through a stressful period in life at the moment, but I can always look up at the sky and am instantly filled with joy, contentment and anticipation for the time I've spent, and next time I can get, up there. It's like THAT is the reward for enduring all the stress.

    I did a tandem jump when I was in Australia about 20 years ago. I had to wait literally all day to jump as I went with a large group of folks. The pressure built and built over the hours waiting. When I finally jumped I screamed so hard, that I dislocated my jaw and spent the entire way down with my mouth locked wide open. Luckily the footage and photos of that day seem to have gone missing. Love your vids Beau. Keep it up!

    Sky Diving is cool, but if you are ever in the situation where you can do it yourself, go for it. It took me a whole weekend of training and then the weather conditions had to be absolutely perfect, but there is no more terrifying experience than jumping out of a plane on your own, pulling your parachute, then looking down at the ground and realising you have no clue where the hell to go and you have only a one way radio on you, so they can talk to you but you can't talk back 🤣 "You're doing great up there Olly, looking really good, it's just... you're heading in completely the wrong direction, we're gonna need you to do a 180". Jumping out the plane was absolutely fine, being sat in a parachute on your own very aware that only a few bits of fabric are supporting you is terrifying. Oh and of course that horrible moment after you pull your parachute and have to check it deployed properly, otherwise you're cutting and pulling the back up..

  • @DanAndHoe

    @DanAndHoe

    Жыл бұрын

    I’ve done 5 static line jumps and it was easily the scariest thing I’ve ever done. I’m lucky the weather was nice when I went for my jumps. The last 3 we had to wait for a few hours as it was too windy until 3 or 4 pm. The first few seconds when leaving the airplane is just a scary blur, but then the parachute opens and everything is fine. It felt so peaceful up in the air. It was so quiet. I even went through a small cloud, which felt like the thickest fog I’ve ever been in. It was so odd to be a few thousand feet up in the air and see nothing. Yeah it was a bloody marvelous experience.

  • @ollythomas6702

    @ollythomas6702

    Жыл бұрын

    @@DanAndHoe I think static line is probably the way to go. I remember the worst feeling for me was just the waiting around. It took so long to get up to 10/12K and everyone else doing static lines and tandems had already gone. Being up there alone is a very surreal feeling. Will do it again one day but opt for the static line next time.
