40 days eating only canned beans (191 tins)
Inspired by a half-page scene in John Steinbeck's Tortilla Flat, where a family of poor, super healthy kids eat an almost exclusive bean diet, Beau decides to do much the same thing.
Eating only the contents of 191 tins of beans over 40 days transforms Beau into The Human Bean, and in doing so gives him a front row seat into how one food, totally and utterly, dictates how he feels. Beau uses his intimate knowledge of running to compare his former self to his bean-self, logging lacklustre training for an ultramarathon that he plans on running during the final day of the experiment. Epiphanies are had, saddles are blazed, and genuine insight emerges from what is strangely appealing day-to-day of mediocrity.

I am autistic and I seriously, really, intensely love beans. They are the cornerstone of my diet in every form, but my favorite is ham and beans. I use smoked ham hocks and cubed pork tenderloin along with the usual fixings and spices, and cornbread. I fill a 5 gallon Dutch oven with ham and beans(1lb Lima beans, 1lb great northern, 1lb split peas) weekly and 2lb ham+bones to eat for the week. It’s incredible. So cheap, very filling and comforting, easy to slow cook, and great drunk food.

Everyone thought I was nuts but I had read about a man from Australia who had been living on nothing but potatoes for over a year and had lost 100 pounds. It's your typical vegan effect. Could've replaced the potatoes with any other veggie with the same outcome. During the honeymoon phase you always feel great. Until your body's stores are depleted and the starvation related autophagy begins. Then all kinds of health issues set in and you feel like crap 24/7. Basically that's the end result of any kind of restricted diet. We're omnivores after all. We get our nutrients from all kinds of different food sources. Greens, fruits, grains, fish, dairy, meats, eggs... We can't stick to only one type of food for good, because then we get into a deficit of certain vitamins, aminoacids or minerals that only the other foods contain. We need the variety and we also need the right balance of it all. It's so simple but it's also not. Depends on your own approach to the matter.
@TheStruggler101
Жыл бұрын
@Mr know it all How can you compare a vegan diet to a diet of only beans or potatos? A vegan diet just means it excludes all animal products and it can be as simple, varied, healthy or unhealthy as you see fit. Any nutritionist will tell you that a diet (vegan or otherwise) that is varied and includes a wide range of different foods is more likely to be optimal than a diet that is restrictive, because your obviously going to get a wide range of nutrients and various other things compared to a restricted diet. All of the largest nutrition organisations on the planet agree that an appropriately planned vegan diet (a wide variety of foods, mostly whole foods, limited processed foods etc) is perfectly healthy for all stages of the human life cycle. There is so much misinformation around, and people claiming that your going to be nutrient deficient if you don't consume any animal products, but the scientific literature does not support this. Even using basic logic and facts can tell you this is nonsense. For example, most vitamins and minerals need to be replenished on a daily basis. Only a few vitamins such as b12 and vitamin A can be stored for any significant amount of time (4 yrs for b12 and 4 months for Vit A). Many millions of people have been eating diets void of animal products for many years and decades. I've been Vegan 6 years myself and I am still waiting for the magic nutrient deficiencies and brain fog or whatever the hell some people talk about. A lot of the time diet isn't even what is causing these people problems, there are many factors that go into good health not just diet.

You are unusual, creative (the human form of bean cans). When you mentioned losing energy and mood as a possible side effect of OTHER things you were now no longer eating, I was reminded of an English experiment. Kids were brought to a "summer program" at a school. The curriculum would be (1965) materials and other things as taking care of your room, no sugar, no phones, no sex... These mostly were kids who were told they were "A" students. They often had a terrible time. They didn't know how to study, how to invent, etc. but the thing that affected them the most was the crash from no sugar, no phones, etc. After a couple weeks, they began to adapt to exercise, getting up, learning to study, etc. Sadly, had they more time, they would overall have done o.k. As it was, they went back home, to being told they were "A" students and resuming their addictions.

Me and my Dad were dirt poor for a couple of years after my Mum split from us and left us in a load of her debt. We ate nothing but chips (Actual chips not American ones) and gravy. For my packed lunch at school I would eat a single Tomato Sauce sandwich and maybe scrounge a jaffa cake and a biscuit from my friends. I think I weighed like 62-63 kilos (138 lbs-ish) while being 6 feet tall. Very skinny. I remember looking around at all these kids eating such a huge variety of food and felt immensely jealous. I still CRUSHED those fuckers in Football though as a defender, and could run all day. I don't regret those days at all. I was never starving, never worried for my life. I was just hungry for something MORE than chips, gravy and the cheapest tomato sauce available. Its made me fall in love with food and I am willing to try absolutely everything just to taste the unique flavours available.
Fun to listen to a guy who is having fun being a human being.
