I think every band should take turns writing songs based around ideas from all of the instruments jammed solo. Even writing around a vocal idea is cool. I try to write melodies on other instruments like piano, xylophone, etc.

This is exactly what YES did back in '71 with their "Fragile" album, they had 4 songs written by the band together and 5 songs written by individual members of the band with their own instrument (or voice) as the focal point of the arrangement scattered between the songs written by the band as a whole. Makes for nice albums with lots of variation.

This is actually a great way to come up with stuff you wouldn't normally play. The same goes to writing using Guitar Pro ONLY. No guitar sitting on your lap, just writing. Muscle memory can fuck you up a lot when trying to come up with great riffs. Awesome exercise, cheers
I write 95% of our songs, like this; starting with our drummer: he plays, I riff, until we like something, then we build... I then develop the song structure, our bassist improves it, vocals comes up with melody, I write lyrics, vox rewrites lyrics, and when we put it all together, we play with it in different ways, until we find a standard... it's mostly based on having fun and each of us focusing on our strengths. it always produces something I like much more than the songs I write on my own, the whole way through... the songs we write together always end up surprising me and I tend to like the song more over time, whereas the songs I wrote on my own, tend to disgust me over time. Great video!

That was really enjoyable to watch. Like in every art form, I'm seeing that when good musicians intentionally f up their process of writing music, they unlock more creativity and come up with cooler/more unique stuff. This is same for designers, artists, etc. I see designers with decades long experience intentionally challenge their creative process which results in more unique work.

As a solo artist i start with whatever instrument i have the idea for first. I might have a drum beat in my head i record that first. Sometimes i get an idea for a bass line so i start with that. Same with guitar. Just depends on how you want to work with it. Most of the time it works out well.
