This is what happens if the Purge Primer Bulb - Pressed too Many Times!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

* VISUALLY EXPLAINED
Pressing the purge primer bulb on your small engine or outdoor power equipment too many times can lead to over-priming. Over-priming can cause several issues, including:
Flooding: Over-priming can force excessive fuel into the carburetor, leading to a flooded engine. A flooded engine won't start and can result in fuel entering the combustion chamber and diluting the engine oil, causing damage.
Difficulty Starting: An over-primed engine may be challenging to start. The excess fuel can create an overly rich fuel-air mixture, making it hard for the engine to ignite.
Spark Plug Fouling: The rich mixture can foul the spark plug, reducing or preventing spark, which is essential for combustion.
Poor Performance: Even if the engine starts, it may run poorly, with symptoms like rough idling, misfiring, or stalling due to the incorrect air-fuel mixture.
Smoke and Excessive Exhaust Emissions: Over-priming can lead to excessive smoke and emissions, as unburned fuel enters the exhaust and burns off.
It's essential to use the primer bulb as instructed in your equipment's manual, usually requiring a few pumps or until you see fuel in the bulb, to avoid these issues. If you accidentally over-prime your engine, you can try starting it with the choke engaged to help clear the excess fuel. If problems persist, you may need to clean the spark plug or wait for the excess fuel to evaporate before attempting to start the engine again.

    The explanation was very good, as was the previous video I watched about why an engine might need choke just to run. However I think an omission may have been made. You mention Purge Primer bulb. I stand ready to be corrected, but I think they are two different animals. The Primer bulb is exactly what you have just described, a means of giving a partial flood to the inlet manifold as a means to give the engine adequate enrichment for it to make its initial start. with a carburettor that does not have a choke flap as part of the design by pumping excess fuel into the carburettor. However a purge bulb while it may look identical, is a means of SUCKING fuel through the carburator so there is adequate fuel within the carburettor when you use a choke to enrich the inlet manifold area. It does not matter how many times you pump a purge bulb such as used on Sthil chainsaws or brush cutters that use a choke device, they will not flood, as the fuel simply passes through the one way valves in the carburettor back to the fuel tank.

    That's exactly what I was thinking. The only way a 2 cycle carb can flood is if the priming forces the needle valve open against the spring pressure and I didn't think it could. That's why it's called a purge valve as it purges the air from the lines and carb with the excessive fuel going back in to the tank. A primer actually squirts fuel in to the intake.

    8:30 actually you are wrong, fuel is never pushed into the throat of the carb. If it is then you have a leaking check valve on your carb. The bulb on a 2 stroke like this is called a purge, not a primer. You purge the air out of the carb circuit. The choke is what pulls gas into the throat of the carb. You can push a purge bulb 1000 times and never flood the carb.

    Thank you very much for explaining the function of the primer bulb . We are told by another small engine site that the primer is only on 4 stroke engines and is called a purge on 2 strokes because it only expels the air so fuel doesn't actually enter the engine. This has puzzled me up to now how this can be, but your excellent video has clarified things for me

    Paul's comment reminds of a question I have. Is there a difference between priming and purging? Seems to me that a system with a choke mechanism will need only to have the fuel line purged of air because choking the carb will cause such a low pressure in the venturi that enough gas will be drawn up for combustion. Contrarily, a system without a choke will need to be primed. Perhaps -- and I'm thinking out loud -- Paul's friend told him it doesn't matter how many times you press a PURGE bulb, because all a purge bulb does is clear the line of air, it doesn't actually draw gas up and deposit it into the reservoir before the venturi.

    It depends on how technical you want to be, some manufactures call it a purge/primer bulb, essentially it does the same thing. I'm referring to small diaphragm carbs found on handheld equipment. Not carbs that use a float bowl, they actually pressurize the bowl to make fuel come out into the venturi.

    In the video named: "How a primer bulb works - Purge Primer Bulb - HOW IT WORKS - (stihl chainsaw etc) " at 13:51 it is said: "We might say: When the primer bulb is pushed in fuel is pushed back up this way, why doesn't it come out this jet. Well, there is a very small valve there on this jet and I can show you, there it is. .... Only when the engine is running does that valve open enough to allow fuel to go into the venturi to mix with the air that is rushing in, to atomize it."

    The primer (air purge valve) will never introduce fuel into the venturing. The primer bulb will only circulate fuel through the carburetor, ready to be used. To introduce fuel into the motor, it can only be done when you open the throttle.

    This is very interesting! even though I have a DIY channel, my knowledge is not on small engines. I swapped out an old carb with a new one, the primer bulb fills with fuel and the return line pushes fuel back into the gas tank. I'm not howver seeing fuel in the inlet. the engine won't start yet so curious what the issue could be.

    What is the problem when the bulb never empties of air? The engine bogs out initially but eventually pulls properly.

  • @scottfirman
    @scottfirman6 жыл бұрын

    If old fuel has gummed up the primer or something is wrong with the primer system, the bulb my require more fuel to start than the three pushes. What I have found is people do not FULLY push the bulb before allowing the bulb to come back all the way, resulting in insufficient fuel intake. On a two stroke, if there is any air leaks in the system, air will be taken in to the system and making the engine hard to start. It may take more pumping to start, or due to a cracked fuel line, refuse to start. Ethanol in your gas will draw moisture and that moisture causes corrosion and even alge growth in the fuel bowl if the small engine has not been run in several seasons.

    I like this theory - I have another one and Mine is better because although your air purge bulb is good advice - An Electric Dewalt Chainsaw doesn't need Priming - I mention this because 2 years ago I switched from petrol chainsaws to electric Dewalt Chainsaws and - I know this is going to sound totally unbelievable but I've had no petrol problems since - I did once get all the way to the top paddocks and find I'd left the Dewalt battery at home - but that's not quite the same as over priming. Solar panel,reg, inverter, Dewalt Charger, Dewalt Chainsaw, Dewalt Tree Down, Dewalt Firewood from the Sun. OK lets try the other way - the petrol way Expensive drills are bought in to find and suck out the carbon filled oil. The carbon filled oil is distilled like we would alcohol to make petrol. The petrol is used and wood is used but so is all your world wide carbon emissions. So lets go back to Green Energy. A Dewalt saw is quiet, draws no attention, cuts right to the end of the battery well past the chain and is Pleasingly light and easy to use. As opposed to the petrol powered saw, that leaves your ears ringing, needs you to personally own an oil company or pay through the teeth for it and is killing the planet. !!!!!!So - back when everything turned to shit when starting a post hole borer it was flooding - I knew that but I didn't know how and why it happened and Thanks to you I now do. !!!!!! Please answer my Hypothetical question: I do have a Dewalt 56v chainsaw, I live on Solar - Why would I want to go back to a petrol saw?

    Hi. Unless you can find a replacement carburetor, with a primer bulb, that fits your particular engine then I personally wouldn't try to fix one in. The reason being is that it could make much more work for you. I.e. if you were to mistakenly cause some damage or just slightly disrupt something within the carb, which could ruin things for you and cost you more money. If your engine needs this extra fuel you are blowing in then this tells me that something that should be right just isn't, and that's the issue. What I mean is that it seems that the cold start system is not functioning as it should. If the manufacturer felt that your particular engine needed a primer then there would certainly be one on there. I agree that it would be beneficial in this case to have one, but I would personally look into how I would fix the cold starting issue before anything else. Does it have a choke? if so is the choke manual or automatic? Are the linkages correctly connected to choke? Is the choke opening and closing enough, as it should do? If you take a real close look you might find a problem here. I, personally, would start there and see how you can progress with it. However, in a very small number of cases I have known people place a small inline manual handpump in the fuel pipe (between the fuel tank and the carburetor). Before they start the engine they give the pump a few pumps to get fuel into the carb (in a similar way to you blowing it in). You will have to decide if this will be ok for your engine and find the pump with the size and shape that will help you. Again, I can't say I have done this myself and can't tell you it will be ok to do so. I have only seen it done by others. Just letting you know, to help with options, that's all! Ultimately though it's your decision. I hope this helps. Craig

    so I poured fuel into the lawn mower carburetor, it started once, and not again. I think I need that video about cleaning it out, because I replaced the diaphragm and it all looks ok but still doesn't start.

    This may be hard to believe , pushing the primer 2 sessions of 280 strokes to successfully prime the DD 13 , DD 15 , or DD 16 .

    Wow, that is a lot of Primes. It sounds like there may be some issue with the priming system. DOes the engine run ok after it has started? or does it run un-even, surging? Craig

    You know that if you pump it to many times the fuel will go back down into the fuel tank not flood the carb
