THIS is what happens if EU4 starts in 1356!

EU4 1356 - one of the best EU4 mods out there. Today, we play as the Byzantines or Byzantium and go about attempting to form Rome! That's right I've succumbed to the whims of the people and caved - we might try restoring Rome as Byzantium. The EU4 Byzantines are arguably in a worse position in 1356, but no matter - we just need to exploit and defeat the Ottomans. Easy, right?

  • @karolnowak6423

15:50 As a Pole, this is 1000% accurate. For those uniniformed - liberum veto privilege lets any member of Parliament to just not only veto an enitre vote on certain matter, but also negates the whole sitting of the Parliament (including matters and reforms that were ALREADY agreed upon). Added as a part of the Nihil Novi constitution from 1505, it was not used in Commonwealth at first, as we Poles could actually dispute at the time to reach a universal consensus. However, starting in 1651, when a local minor noble used it after being bribed by Lithuanian Radziwłł magnate family, it started being used as the weapon to fight internal opposition, neuter any attempt of the king to strengthen his position and just ensure the local short sighted particularists benefit over lack of reforms. It was one of the major reasons of downfall and later partitions of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Basically it is the bomb with a long fuse that later will continue to fuck you up as nobles sooner or later become particularist bastards until your country is partitioned by neighbours.

Lithuania and Poland regained independance 123 years later after the World War One, in reality where any individual having or invoking the similar privilege would be ridiculous anyways* *Yes, Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain Elisabeth II still to this day HAS the power to outright veto any reform of British Parliament and to negate and disband the session of said Parliament, but invoking it would be either taken as a bad joke or lead to abolishment. Which of course is probably the last thing she would want.

Ioannis Kantakouzenos being a pretender is not quite accurate as he just wanted to be a regent for Ioannis V, who was too young to become emperor and he was a very close friend to Andronikos III, Ioannis V's father, whom he probably wouldn't even have betrayed in his death bed. He even called himself Ioannis VI when he became emperor to indicate that Ioannis V is the legitimate successor. It would have been really nice if Kantakouzenos just became a regent instead of just removing the Palaiologos from the throne. Edit: It seems I was wrong about Kantakouzenos not attempting to become emperor since he made his son co-emperor. Still Ioannis V, who was still co-emperor, succeeded Kantakouzenos after he tried to do so which means the real historical timeline can't be replicated in this mod.

@TheSocialStreamers because I know you guys are both big history buffs, you should look into John VI Kantakouzenos, he was the the Byzantine emperor just before the start date you picked. He had a very close friendship with Umur bey of Aydin (whose heir and older brother you conquered), so close they considered each other brothers and Umur Bey turned down a marriage to Kantakouzos' daughter because he claimed it would be like marrying a close family member. Long story short, during Kantakouzos' reign the byzantines followed a policy of cooperation with the Anatolian Turkic beyliks, and historians believe that the byzantines likely could have maneuvered into a role as kingmakers in Anatolia and likely would have held the Bosphorous in such a role. Instead the Palaiologos dynasty claimed sole rulership after a devastating Civil War (ending in 1347), and turned policy towards garnering nebulous and ultimately futile support from Catholic europe. I dont know if anyone besides me finds this totally fascinating as a "what if" scenario, but I presented an undergraduate thesis adjacent to this topic in the Spring, and I find the final days of the Byzantine empire (but even more so the early days of the Ottoman empire) totally fascinating and in dire need of new historical perspective.

In EU3, that decision made you move two points towards decentralization, which decreased your income (along with a bunch of other penalties). It can take many years to move a slider once as well. If there are any bad hidden events or something, I think they should make it more clear in EU4.

Yes - liberum veto privilege lets any member of Parliament to just not only veto an enitre vote on certain matter, but also negates the whole sitting of the Parliament (including matters and reforms that were ALREADY agreed upon).

You have to replace the game files with the mod files, since you don't go through the launcher to activate the mod.

@@azh698 That ain't how cracked EU4 works, or at least, how any half decent crack works. You can access the launcher normally, you just need to edit .mod files to point to the correct folder instead of the goobledygook the Steam Workshop has by default. As to where to get this mod, skymods seems to have the latest version up.
