Potential purchasers be aware. There are two versions of this lens, the original, and the updated. In my haste, I ordered the original version for my Sony Camera, at a "bargain price" on eBay. The original version has a red ring. The new version is plain black, with no red ring and costs more than the bargain eBay price of the original version.

For all those wondering... The new version is significantly updated, with many benefits to it. - fully aluminium body (yes, this metal is actually named aluminium and "aluminum" does not exist on planetEarth). - slightly better lens elements. - lens coating improved, making the thing almost flare-proof and the front lens water-repellent. - AF actuators are backed with a better firmware. - a waterproof and dustproof ring was added at the back, by the bayonet mount. Beware when choosing, because even the Yongnuo site displays the old version when you get to it through search engines. Take time for a deeper search down this page, then you may find it. Same warning for most sites - especially A., where they try to fool you, as always, by prompting the old version in 90% of search results - where you must be sure you are watching at the newer iteration. The absence of the red ring helps, but it sometimes is difficult to see when pictures are not properly captured.

I shot some pix of my grandson over the weekend and the images are very comparable to what I get out a Sigma 85 f1.4 I have on loan. Similar results, Huge difference in price!!! The focusing on the TT is a little slower than the Sigma but nothing really big.

It is, smart guy. 😁 An “optical shoot” puts a better lens at the end so you can project a more detailed image, like a logo on a 35mm slide. Snoots sometimes have a rudimentary optical system for zooming and focusing your cookies. My optical snoot gives you a lens mount so you can pop a photographic lens on the end for more detailed imaging, and selectable focal lengths.

I have a Yongnuo 50mm F1.4 Nikon F mount. It's pretty decent. It's not the best, but it does a good job. Its all or mostly metal build. I bought it used on Ebay for about $80. I'm sure like many budget 3rd party lenses, it's a crap shoot whether or not you're going to get a good copy.

85 mm seems to be the easyest focal to build for full frame. Samyang, Meike, Yougnuo... even at budget price they are all good ! But for me the best bokey maker ever is the Samyang 85 mm F/1.4 AF (version1 asphéric, not the version 2).

As always, I appreciate your review and thoughts on this lens. Also appreciate that you share your honest thoughts, regardless of how you obtained the lens. Here is my concern. If I were a company sending someone a product for review to be shared with a large social media audience, I would make sure that specific sample was the best I could find. Looking at the comments on the Yongnuo website you shared for the RF mount version reveals a wide range of experiences and what seems to be some pretty significant quality and consistency issues. The specific sample reviewed here is great, but it seems like randomly finding great samples could be a problem. B&H appears to have the older (based on another comment on this video) RF version of this lens, which I might be tempted to try since they stand behind whatever they sell. Probably wouldn’t order direct from China based on reasonable possibility of issues and trying to sort that out with an overseas manufacturer.

These things are too expensive (even at the budget end) to accidentally buy something less useful (which I found out by buying my Sigma 16mm F1.4 which is manual focus - making it horrible for self-portraiture).

But the Canon is 2 gorillas so can this youngie slide in at 1/5 the price and make me cry? How big the bokeh? Maybe its all down to the IS. But if Tamrons done a Vibration Control 45mm could… … Expensive hairs we are splitting. I may be up for selling my favourite hunk of glass.

The fuji 27 mm takes rough street situations without stopping to work. The TT 25 mm lens bayonet is wobbly and moves around setting the focus… never again a cheap lens… there is a reason why those lenses are cheap…

Is the Canon version illegal to import into the US? The link you provided showed two versions for RF cameras. One had a strange mount and note that you had to push the button on the lens rather than on the camera to dismount. They were the same price. Comment?

We use this lens on our podcast along side expensive sony lenses. It won't be replaced by a sony even though we could. Super sharp.

Sharpest comparison to what ? I see in Amazon, people who actually purchased it are not posting any positive reviews. Is your review based on another website? Would be nice to put it side by side with a native lens to back up your reviews please Thank you

Would it work on nikon d3200

If you can find it in F mount I believe it will work as long as the lens has an internal focus motor and doesn't rely on the camera to focus it. Since the D3200 has no focus motor. It will look more like a 127mm lens though because of the camera being a crop sensor camera.

Useless to me because it doesn't have EF mount canon.

Keep in mind the cameras used to test. The Jongnuo was tested with the 61mp a7rIV and the other ones with the 42mp a7rII. These days pretty much all lenses are super sharp but most are not well corrected for CA's etc ( 3:13 as an example )

The pronunciation of the brand isn’t quite right. It should be pronounced as a single word quickly “Yongnuo”, (Yongnuò) not as “Yong … newo.”

Yongnuo has been a minnow to date, with decidedly "average" lenses, so it looks like this autofocus RF mount lens has gone under Canon's radar!
