Today, in another episode of Chase uses himself as a test dummy, we're taking Yamaha's MT07 to the glorious north Georgia mountains to see if this crappy suspension can handle the curvy roads! We all know the suspension is probably the worst part of this motorcycle so we're asking a lot of it to handle mountain riding!

The sad thing about the front suspension on the MT07 is that Yamaha could have shipped it with 15w fork oil and it would feel planted and confidence inspiring! It's a super easy fix for them!

The front suspension can be almost fixed by replacing the fork oil with 15 wt oil or even 20wt oil. The spring rates are ok for someone with a full riding gear weight of approx 95 - 100kg or more. Dial the rear shock rebound damping all the way out and then in approx one full turn.. the play with the spring tension to suit your weight.

Translating what I know about performance driving. It sounds like the ideal trainer bike. Some one like me who wants to take the leap from four wheels to two, it sounds like I’ll be able to use the limitations of the suspension and the action of the throttle to learn to be a more capable rider faster. The mountain canyons are where I learned to elevate my driving skills. I’ll be doing the same when I get my MT-07. Safety first of course.

I had the same issue, riding Deals Gap and Cherehola on a regular basis because its in my backyard. I ended up tightening the back shock, did nothing to the front and found that in the tight twisties and tightening apexes of the Smokey's, sitting at a far rear position in tight turns (as is the norm) the front end ended up getting very stable and feels really good, I assume due to not loading it up in that riding position. 6 feet tall and 220 pounds and have 3.5K miles on the 2021, no complaints at this point, but have seen other riders speak to the front end death wiggle when hitting changing surfaces, and I think there may be a few factory defects out there as I have never experienced this on some of the curviest roads East TN has, and they are a plenty. I am selling the ZX-9R in the garage to a friend in favor of the MT-07, for comfort, and all around fun, and the fact that I am not getting in any track time, the MT-07 is my choice of everything out there I have ridden in the 2020-2022 realm. The most fun you can have with your helmet on IMHO.

    | have the 2018 model and this will be my 3rd year riding it. I don't get out on it much and I've only put 6k on it to date. I haven't noticed any instability yet but I also don't push it very hard in the turns. With practice I've learned how to reduce the throttle without fully cutting it to get the desired amount of engine braking, when coming off the throttle don't go to full stop, leaving a "tiny" fraction of a degree of throttle from idle will allow you to control the amount of EB effect.

I know everyone in the shop has been using this bike for the last month, did you fix the suspension for your weight prior to this test 2. The old MT07 needed the front suspension shaved and a heavier fork oil to make it rock and roll. Not sure on the 2021 but just the fluid will make a big difference, just got one and that's what I'm doing right now fork oil change. The brakes just spend the $100 and drop the EBC pads in day and night that's what I did to my 2018 MT09 and going to do it to these front brakes, that are from the old MT09 that's how they saved money. Rear shock just going to need to up grade after you destroy this oem one which I been hearing is good for a year depending on your weight and driving. Ride safe stay safe.

Rear preload needs to be near max, adjust rebound accordingly. The front is too soft and needs stiffer springs with preload adjusters. That said, I think you would find some minor adjustments to your riding style would help with this bike. First I would be riding the midrange in 4th gear, not the redline in 3rd. Throttle is too twitchy for that. Would help with the “unstability” in those dips. Also, a flash tune makes a big difference with that on/off throttle mapping. The fuel cut for emissions is the problem. I don’t understand how Triumph can get it so right and the Japanese bikes get it so wrong.

hello,.. I think the suspension is adjusted to the motorcycle,.. and it serves,.. for normal use, or even a little more accelerated,.. to emphasize that already in 2020 the suspension was a little improved, and it is noticed a lot when compared to the mt 07 models from 2014 to 2017,... then it will also depend on the rider's weight,.. for 60 to 65 kg,.. I would say it works well,..however, it can be improved and you don't even spend a fortune ,..but what I think happens is that certain people who know how to ride well, try to take their good cycling skills to the maximum,..and oh,. of course, the suspension starts missing ,..my advice is simple, instead of putting a 1200 euro akrapovik ,.. you can change the entire suspension from 07 ,... and then it's ready for trackday ,.. and other jokes...

My 2014 MT07 (FZ07) has all these same issues you mentioned, although my suspension is a little better cause it has thicker oil and had the spacer cut down. Even so, I LOVE this bike and I wouldn't trade it in for ANYTHING else. ___ OC: More colours the better... on trees. lol.

I have the same bike. I'm 150 lbs. and I don't have any problem with the front end. If you want to get more speed you need to up shift unlike most bikes where you down shift. You need to use the torque. If you want to get rid of the instant acceleration, you need to be in 4th instead of 3rd.

@@MT07R Not too much. When I had my Street Triple I use to wheelie it on purpose and accidentally some times. Just watch some beginner KZread videos on wheeling. Always cover the rear brake to protect yourself. I kind of grew out of it. It is a thrill though.

OC: Doesn’t the R7 have an upgraded front suspension? That could have a lot to do with the lack of feeling planted on the MT-07. Along with the stress member.

Well, I have a 2018 MT07 and I never ever thought it was unstable or had suspension issues. It's not the best for real road trips but I have the FJR for that ;-)

But have you ridden other bikes so that you have a point of comparison. I have been on 2013 Ninja 650 and a MT-03. Both bikes feel great very stable. I have the 2016 FZ-07 and the bike handles like its riding through mud. The bike just wanders. As Chase said, it does not feel stable at all in turns. I have to run 10 mph under the speed limit through turns to feel like I'm not going to wreck. The Ninja and MT-03 I can run 10 over the speed limit and no worries what so ever.

Tell you what I noticed and I hate is that Yamaha said for the 21 model they lost 1 hp and torque compared to the previous models and I call absolute bs I had 2 17 models before my 21 and both older models had the same mods as my new one does and it’s considerably lower on power really annoys me since I really loved the 07s. I’ve only had it for a few months now and I can say everything else about the bike is awesome but I regret getting it I wish I would have shot for the 09 The selling point for me is the sound of the 07s reason why I never switched to a 09 or 10

Oh I see ! You call them bends or curbs in the States ?! At the very most they're wide sweepers nothing like hairpins and twistes we have in Europe on real mountains. Do you know anything about counter steering or even body position when you're about to approach a proper bend ?! As for the suspensions, I've reconditioned them with Ohlins fsk 108 springs plus thicker oil hence it doesn't dive in when you either brake or lean over for that matter, it's not a tractor like your HD so please don't treat it as such.. Lol
