Evan, my opinion is your herd is too small for the amount of hay you feed at one time. I would suggest if possible, you feed smaller amount of hay at one time. The animals will waste much more hay when they have an unlimited supply, if the supply is regulated they will clean up what is provided and waste less. Just an old Pennsylvania farm boy talking here. Love you channel!

Just spread the hay over the mud. It seems to make it easier to walk where there is hay on the ground. You have enough in the compost bins without the extra work to scrape up all the hay out of the mud.

Spreading lime on the floor of the pens will absorb moisture and combat bacteria.

I wouldn't worry too much about what people are saying. You'll work out what works and what doesn't. Great video as always. All the best 🇬🇧.

Rebecca gets into hard dirty work without having to be cheer on . In fact she has to be held back at times . As for the hay feeding arrangement , With the amount of rain and melting snow . A covered hay feeder is the only way to feed your large round bales and only a few stock animals .

City people probably do not realize that Square bales must be barned or tarped or they will rot from rain and snow, its not mandatory that you barn or cover the Large Round bales but it does eliminate about a 4" layer of bad hay that will cover the entire Round bale from being rained or snowed on, that layer of bad hay cattle will not eat so it is wasted.

The yuck jobs on a farm are necessary to keep happy and healthy animals and people. Gutters is a great idea! Always, one more thing to do! Thanks for sharing.

Evan, when we raised feeder calves we always fed in shelter for the same reason that you stated. We fed square bales and found the biggest issue was we had to drop hay twice a day, but we checked on the animals twice a day plus freshened their water supply. Feed and water makes for healthy livestock... Keep up the good plan the animals will be better for your effort .👍🏼

Your new barn area for your animals is great and it is easier for both of you to tend to the animals and mingle with them without all the outside rain and snow.

When you put the drain in maybe you can put a field tile in the middle and run it out as well??That would keep the middle a little dryer.

Remwmber several months ago you cleaned that area out for the drain and madea ramp at the edge out of all that old manuer? That yard is on a slope and should drain naturally. Why is it retaining water? You need to scrape all that manuer out so it can drain off again. Installing a couple loads of gravel would help maintain the drainage!

It's getting way too much water ('creek' under the barn, roof runoff), plus being constantly trampled by the livestock over many years. You're right, it just needs some work and it will be fine, but it definitely needs drainage for both water sources away from the fenced-in area.

The concrete floor bank barn is easier to clean than the gravel floor barn. Shoveling manure & hay on the gravel floor is gonna be a lot harder.

Working a farm is constant work, I can tell you and Rebecca love it though! You both knew the barn would be a mess but to protect the animals ya'll did it anyway. That's love.😊

I had the same problem with my barn yard so I ended up putting course sand and tilled it in and kept doing this and over time ended up having a hard ground base like concrete which made it easier to clean and also keep foot rot prevention .Hope this helps. Love your videos and work ethics

Cleaning up an area where animals stay is never fun or easy, especially where cattle or hogs are concerned. The mud that we have had from rains recently has made cleaning up even harder. You two did a good job at cleaning, much better. Have a good day.

I like the bedding you spread for the animals. Looks nice. As for the mudhole, I would just "pitchfork" the hay around to cover the mud. That would help and does not take too much effort. What would help more would be to spend a few hours putting up a gutter system to deflect all that water coming off the roof. When cleaning out the barn, a couple of wheelbarrows would make the job go easier I think.

Keep doing what your doing you care about your Animals Where I live in Shetland the climate is very different and we have to do things differently. Close to the sea and gale force winds constantly. The cows spend the whole winter indoors and fed through a barrier I never had enough cattle to justify slatted floors but it keeps them clean we always put down sawdust and straw for them to lie on . Great Job Guy's on cleaning-up the bank barn and getting the gray feeder moved to the white barn. farm-work is never done..

Evan, get your self some conveyer belt lay it down on that barn floor install a chain at the far end of the roll, then you can hook a rope or extension chain .hook it up to the tractor and pull it out. Drag the roll up out side . Then when you get the ally semi clean you can roll it back and sweep out the corals on to the belt and repeat. Remember your not getting any younger! From the west coast of Tennessee.

Whenever the back of the barn gets cleaned up use your 3pt sub soiler and run it east and west. I know you have clay but it help till you get gutters up. I have used it on spots that won't drain and it helps. Winter time is always a mess with animals!!

Really RESPECT the two of you! You are so Transparent in showing real life struggles and owning up to mistakes but also showing your wins after getting things right. It teaches me the true meaning of sacrifice and the best of conquering the battles that occur. I was curious if you could roll back the immediate fence behind the bank barn and with your box blade change the slope or create a trench going straight down the hill to the creek behind. Might have to get a dozer of some size but it might save on pipes. No major diiging the french drain out to the trench in the larger pasture. Just a thought and I know you will come up with something that will work. Thanks so much for sharing your lives with us and can't wait to see your next adventure!

All that material will compost great. I love composting. So cool watching the steam from a fresh turn over during a cold day. Do you turn your compost regularly or just let it pile up? Just using the pallet forks to pick it up and let it fall, fluffing it, will do wonders for breaking the material down. It will bring air into the center of the pile. Every few weeks would be good. ... Lots of hard work put in. Great job!

The clean condition of your animals indicates they receive good care. It is difficult to ascertain topography on your vid, but if you installed 6" gutter with downspout facing the pig pen area, possible run downspout into water trough for stock use. Then run a 4" slotted tile up from ditch with a stone receiver near trough for over flow.

I remember when I lived on a farm and it was a lot of work, tending to the livestock, pasture maintenance, hay for the animals and feed for the chickens, it was a never ending job, but you two have got a routine that works and you adapt to whatever comes and make it work and the videos are great.

I just happen to run across your video from a year ago on your chestnut trees. Also, I have watched your videos on harvesting. Produce from your garden. You need pollinators, i.e. beehives. There was a big company in Omaha that was trying to grow pumpkins like 200 acres but they didn’t have any blossoms. They asked my friend to come look at, and he said do you need pollinators? So he asked if he could bring his beehives out there and then they head pumpkins up the Ying yang.

You need to drive a pin on each side of your sliding barn door at the point you want to leave it open so the animals don't brake the door or track pushing on it.I made that mistake and it was a major pain to fix in bad weather.

Hidden Heights Farm had the same problem with the bale feeder, waste. He used a cattle panel wrapped and welded to steel cage to keep the animals from wasting the hay. He put the cattle panel inside the feeder, and then welded it in. I was successful.

Would it be easier if you used a wheelbarrow to load it and wheel it to the tractor and dump it in the bucket. Seems like it would save a lot of walking and pushing

Do you own a manure spreader ? if so I'd spread the manure from the barn onto the hay fields rather than compost it plus chicken and turkey poop is excellent

The spent hay would be good spread out over the mud. The seeds in it will hopefully help the soil in the spring and grow.

The bottom has fallen out here too.We are greatful for the snow and rain, but boy oh boy is it muddy. I have to say I'm not a fan of having animals all together. Larger animals push smaller animals out of the way, can injure them easily and cattle have different nutritive requirements than sheep. You can save on hay that way too. Glad you do so much to keep them out of the mud.

I built my own hay cradle and it is working very well! I need to tweak it this summer, but over all I am loving it. It works well for my horse and goats. (yes, I have videos on my channel about it)

I have a cradle feeder like yours and I put a trimmed to length pig panel in the bottom before I put the hay bale in and limits waste and it burying itself as quick. When it’s empty give it a shove.
