This Is the Christian Solution to Vanity

Ойын-сауық

Vanity is not what many people think it is. It can come in many forms, and is not necessarily an infatuation with yourself. Vanity is an inordinate preoccupation with what other people think about you-which is different.
It’s important, to an extent, to care what others think about you. It can even be charitable. But when this care becomes unbalanced, it leads to neglecting more important things.
Wanting to be noticed can be vain, but not wanting to be noticed can also be vain. When you shrink back and don’t want anyone to look at you, it can be a form of vanity or false humility; because not wanting to be seen can be an indication that you care an inordinate amount about what people think of you.
Vanity can also cause an unwillingness to share the Faith. Many times we think sharing the gospel will make people think less of us. How many times has the thought of what other people think prevented you from sharing the Faith?
Balance is pertinent in every aspect of vanity, and the best way to achieve that balance is to care about what God thinks of you above all.
These sayings about humility really sum it up well, since humility is the antidote to vanity:
“Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less” (Rick Warren, The Purpose-Driven Life).
“If you meet a really humble man … He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all” (C.S. Lewis).

I'm on the journey too, brother. There's so much to learn. The more I seek, the closer God brings me to the truth In reality, all church institutions are somewhat fallen right now. We have a duty to resurrect the faith here on Earth. We are saved by faith alone, yes. But what are we called to do on Earth? We aren't *just* called to be saved. But to be soldiers and servants to God.

I made the journey myself and it's 3 years now since I became Catholic from being born and raised Presbyterian. It took me 6 years but it was probably there 10 years earlier. The most crucial thing is to be a lover of Truth and to say to God every day, Lord here I am ask whatever and I will follow.

@Alex Higgings you're supposed to go through Jesus only. John 14: 6 "Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well." You can't pray to Mary to get to Jesus to get prayer answered. You can only go through Jesus. Catholics are sinning when they pray to Mary and saints. You can't twist scriptures to suit your false beliefs. I am a former catholic.

Loved this. I had to do a self-examination a few months back because I am a creative person and enjoy dressing with bright colors and some makeup. I really questioned myself if it was in vanity because many religious people dress the opposite of that. But I did it in the way you described the person with the hair in the video - left the house that way and didn't really think of it again. Shifted my focus on thoughts of what God thinks about me overall and that is what I believe helped decrease my vanity, not changing the way I dressed if it was modest and appropriate.

My looks is definitely something I've somewhat obsessed over since reaching my 20s. Now that I'm reading the Bible and learning about everything, I want to stop being so vain. I used to cut my own hair twice a week, with a crispy fade and line up my beard. Now I'm shaving my beard with the trimmer and giving myself a buzzcut. To me this is a big step back, a more modest look. Tackling each sin and commandment one at a time. Maybe I will grow a modest beard, I do like myself with a beard. Or is that me being vain again? This will be tough but I can do it!

The Catholic church has 2 000 years of wisdom (+ the wisdom from the jewish people). It has let some time to observe people's heart !! This is one of the crazy thing about our time, we don't realize how the church (through the tradition, the many writing of saints, ..) is "THE" expert in human kind, psychology and all. Though obviously being a priest does not mean he knows 100% of the church wisdom (and nobody could, it is so rich..) yet, it helps ! Vanity is certainly not a recent struggle. This was such an awesome video. Im usually the first to stand up and in this instance the message is I need to keep quiet. I made a decision today to let some complaints that I had worked on for many months and had filed and pulled them and take the higher ground because God knows what they did and its to toxic to keep "the fight" and decided to focus more time on God, which is allot of extra time during a pandemic. Sure it would have cleared my name and called out some very bad things that happened to my block, however, I immediately felt peace when I pulled the complaints. And resolved to stay out of activism, something ive been involved for 30 years. I feel so much peace. Sometimes the fighter needs to put down the fight. Thank you for this video.

I have this tendency which I found in the internet called Fantasy-prone personality, and it's my way of self gratifying, so some sort of vanity. As I was listing my options of how to address or outgrow this habit, I remembered this video. Instead of excessively thinking what others will think of me, I should care more what God thinks of me. And this is so liberating.

How do I trust in Jesus?? Why don’t I get that He loves me and cares for me? Even when He DIED on A CROSS, ROSE FROM THE GRAVE, CONQUERING MY SIN, EVEN THOUGH HE TOLD ME? why do I do this. Why do I sin all these and yet I ignore and forget and neglect Him? Why don’t I want to pray? Why do I feel alone even though I know He cared and loves me and is with me? Please help me.

We all struggle ...even St Paul and the greatest saints did ! conquering sins is a daily fight we will have until death ! There is nothing easy in rejecting sins and having a rich prayer life. Only with the graces of God and a bit of self-discipline for prayers we can slowly improve..I strongly advice going to daily mass if you can (or as many as weekly mass as you can) since receiving the Eucharist is a huge help to reject sin, step by step. Go often to confession even if you don't like it (and huh, who likes it before going?..). The daily rosary is also a great way. Mother Mary is so helpful to conquier sins, especially impurity. It's okif sometimes, you're distracted, fall half asleep or whatever..she sees your faithfulness. God sees that you are trying. Again, you will need patience but God gives all the graces we need through prayer and sacrement. Be smart, avoid any temptation you can, make decision in your life to put God at the center.

Thanks for this video, Fr. Mike! It made me think about CS Lewis’ on pride in Mere Christianity. “It is very right, and often our duty, not to care what people think of us, if we do so for the right reason; namely, because we care so incomparably more what God thinks.” And then also “a proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”

Woah this was aptly timed. @_@ las night I was reflecting upon the day/week and realized out of vanity I had refrained from full disclosure of information to others lest it be received poorly. I had determined for some reason it was due to an overemphasized concern for their regard. But Father ....the wound is not the concern that is the symptom, the wound is a fear for a lack of love. It is why if our eyes are on Jesus who loves us absolutely that this concern dissipates.

I am so vain that I think Fr. Mike was describing me from 3:13-3:56. For real though, this video has come at a great time. I thank the Lord for this. I experience hesitation whenever I want to share my Faith. I love Our Lady and would like to make her known to all. I never knew She was a 'hindrance' to many non-Catholics until recently. I grew up Catholic, went through catechism. So, most of the things about The Blessed Virgin were a given to me. I never questioned them. I started wearing a miraculous medal recently. I didn't want a small one so I went for a medium size one. I cannot describe how hard my heart was pounding when I wore it. My mind was filled with all these questions that people could ask. Do you know what's interesting? Barely anyone asked a question. In fact, one of my friends, upon seeing the medal, bent slightly and kissed it. I was taken aback. That was not the response I was expecting. I am now on my third Miraculous Medal. I gave the first one to my boyfriend (he wears it all the time.) I bought another one and a guard in my place of work saw it and wanted it. I gave it to him. One of my classmates is on my case to get him one. I did not expect all this to happen. I'll do my best to change my mindset to what God thinks rather than what people think. Please, pray for me.
