This is the best GFX Pancake (Hint, its the GF63mm f2.8)

The GF50 F3.5 is the official 'pancake' or compact lens for the GFX. But is there a better option? In this video I give my thoughts on a lens I found to be pretty compact, and just a little bit larger - the GF63mm F2.8.

    Hi Mike! Nice to see a new video from you! Let me say your content was among the factors that persuaded me to return the GF 80 and buy the GF 110 - a decision that I have been happy with ever since! I also love using the 110 as a walk around lens - especially using the XPAN crop it is simply magical to me (although my back doesn't always seem to appreciate that). My hobbyist kit is financially constrained to 2 lenses for my 50SII - the 110 and until recently - the 63. I decided to sell the 63 as I needed a slightly wider field of view for travel and everyday photography and istead get the 50 f3.5. Unfortunately I needed the funds for the 50 and had to sell the 63 beforehand in order to afford it. I must say that even though I pretty much knew what to expect I was a little disappointed - it is exactly as you described it - the 50 is really nice compact sharp lens - but it just lacked the wow factor for me (unlike the 63 that produces more often than not simply stunning results). I think the 63 is criminally underrated lens - and in my experience it is much faster than most people claim. In conclusion I should say that personally for me I do not regret selling the 63, but I also decided to return the 50. Currently I am looking at the 45 as a favourite to complete my kit. Would you be so kind to share some furhter thoughts about it alone and also in context with the 63 and 50? Abother consideration would be the new 55 - but this one will really hurt both my budget and my back... :D I really need to see some glowing reviews for the 55 before I even consider it...

    Hey Dimitar - thanks for your comment and input as always sir! I'm really glad to have helped you settle on the 110! Man. I love that lens. Perfectly said on the 63! funny you went the opposite direction as me. I'm def going to sell the 50 next year. Once I get the GF20-35 or GF55, it will be listed. We are aligned: The GF50 is a very overrated lens and the GF63 is 'criminally underrated'. Perfectly phrased! I had the 45 for a month back in 2022. I have content to share from it, but I would need to think if I have enough to say for a script to do a 50 vs 45 vs 63. But to be honest, at this point we really need to factor in this: 45 vs 50 vs 55 vs 63. As I type this… I think I will def make a video at some point on this topic. I didnt try out the 55 yet. But i'm pretty confident to say… and take into account, my fav focal lengths are very wide and telephoto. So take this with a grain of salt. But all those 4 lenses are so close in range IMO… I think at this point, just save up and go with the 55/1.7 and you'd close the chapter on mid range!

    Nice review 👍🏼 Price not always relates to sharpness though. The Hasselblad 45p f4.0 is half the price of the 45 f3.5 bit is definitely sharper and lighter. In my experience the Fuji 50mm is very sharp and has more silence and snappier AF then the 63. The 63 more light and character 🤔

    Don't ruin my top secret plan! But yeah. That is my plan! I thought the pancake would be a light walk around lens. But I'm scrapping that. The 63 would 100% suffice as a walk around for me. But I think I'll just settle for the 55/1.7! But I need to get my hands on that and make a few videos first. Stay tuned…

    Thanks for your request! I can certainly add it to the list. I own the GF20-35 and GF50… for now… after trying out the GF55, I will be selling my GF50 so I'm sure you could imagine how the comparison between the wide zoom and the 3 primes you mentioned would be 😅. Funny thought though, when thinking about what video I wanted to make next, I was between the GF30/3.5 and the GF63/2.8. I went with the GF63 because it overall would appeal to me more. It's a really nice lens. I bought the GF50 last year but didn't end up using it a ton because I really love DOF. But also… I found that it flares a lot. I have a bunch of content for a GF50 vs GF45 that I was going to make in 2022, and largely compared between the two, the GF45 wins by a landslide. THe GF50 flares, and not in a pretty way and isn't a crazy sharp lens, at least compared to the GF45. As I type this out… let me know your thoughts but I was thinking about making more of a dialogue comparison review. I'm sure some people would take to the comments saying this isnt a super technical review, but what are your thoughts on a light comparison with talking points and some image comparisons?

    Thanks for another nice video. I think Fuji needs to rethink their approach their lens line-ups, bring some consistency in it, and immediately stop the use of all stepper motors in their GFX and high-end X-mount lenses. It is outdated tech, unsuitable for video use, and has therefore has in my view no place in high end glass in 2023. The tech used in the GF 63mm - the stepper motor and external focus - was barely passable the day it came out, with the GF 23mm, 110mm and 250mm being vastly superior with the use of linear motors and nice internal zoom. People recognize this, as good second hand copies are relatively low in price and remain on offer forever. It is also a lens type that is basically unusable for video, while Fuji shifts some focus to this in their new GFX 100 II. The GF 63mm is forgiven, as being an older lens, but the use of stepper motors in the much newer GF 80mm and new 55mm f 1.7's is inexcusable, and a reason for me not to consider these lenses. This would be unthinkable for their competition such as Sony in their GM lens line-up, which outperform every GF lens in terms of focusing with linear motors since 2017 (since the 100mm f2.8 STF and 24mm f1.4 GM, where they first got it right). They do the same for X-mount. In the last 2 years they made these really high quality and nice fast focusing XF 18mm, 23mm, 33mm, 90mm (which is older), yet then you get this boondoggle of a XF 56mm f1.2 R WR with stepper motors again where focus is all over the place on an X-T5. It's no longer acceptable for USD 1000+ lenses in 2023, no matter how nice the glass. If we invest in good native AF glass, and pay the Fuji-premium, we should expect the best autofocus they can offer. If we want the charm of slowing down, we go manual. Poor autofocus is just frustrating. The GF 50mm is often on sale for USD 500, which may be a price at which you could forgive its flaws. It is nice and compact, does focus internally, with linear motors, and the image quality is passable but doesn't give the excitement of a 110mm or 250mm. It's the lens that made it to my collection, the GF 63mm I will pass, as I will every other Fuji lens without LM-designation in the name.

    I need to start consulting you before I make videos! Thank you for your comment and wealth of knowledge! I think despite the stepper motor & external focus the 63 flys pretty under the radar for most GFX owners. I'd place the quality in mid tier on the GFX system. What lenses do you own for the GFX?!

  • @Edwin--

    @Edwin--

    10 ай бұрын

    @@MikeBanom Haha, I think you are doing very well, I really like your reviews! My criticism was solely aimed at Fujifilm's design choices in their lenses. They should mirror all their lenses off the GF 110mm, they had the design right back in 2017. And what's up with these weird filter sizes... why not just 67 or 82mm for the GF lenses? I have the 23mm, 30mm, 50mm, 45-100mm, 110mm, 100-200mm and 250mm. The 30mm has the coffee grinder motors too, but internal focus. It is a useful focal length for me though, so this one got the pass from me. It's not a lens with a wow-factor. Now in 2023, the 20-35mm would probably be the better choice, over the 23 and 30mm primes. The 23mm, 110mm, 250mm and 45-100mm are top tier for me, with the 110mm at the top and 250mm second. The 30mm, 100-200mm and 50mm are mid-tier, with the 50mm at the bottom (which I purchased half price during a Fuji promo).

    @@Edwin-- I dont feel I'm qualified with lens knowledge to talk why they didn't normalize the sizes, but I couldn't agree more. I bought all my NDs at 82mm. It would have been great if the 110 had an 82mm thread! Very curious - what are your use cases for your 3 different tiers?

    @@frontstandard1488 This is what happened with the GF23 and the GF20-35. Is the 20-35 a better lens, nitpicking, yes. Both are amazing lenses. The GF55 pretty much took out the GF63, 50 and 45. Is it better, imo yes, but… the 63 is an awesome lens. And its lighter and smaller. IMO its a great pickup!
