    Just picked up a 110mm yesterday after almost two years of working with the 80mm. Aside from the actual focal length, which is rather interesting, I never loved the 80mm. The CA was a noticeable problem from the start. And it wasn't just wide open. It was happening at f/2 and f/2.8 too. And as much as I wanted to love the lens, I didn't. The shots were never quite as sharp as they should be for a nearly $3,000 prime. The 110 is a magnificent lens and performs the way an expensive prime should. And it's on sale right now for under $2,300. Feels like a steal.

Has the same motor as my 80 1.7 but surprisingly the AF works better (as your realized also) than the 80 on my 100S. also the 55 has better capability for closer focus for semi macro photography. the weight of the 80 and 55 are almost identical a 2.0 lbs. I am definitely enjoying the lens.

    Truely the best and most comprehensive comparison of these two gems... i personally mostly prefer the 80 mm (ff equivalent 65mm), because it has a great bookeh without the starting compression at 80mm ff equivalent of the 120... and for portraits the "sharpness falloff is perfect 👌

    Great video. I faced that struggle last month. Seems like I did the good choice going with the 110 :) Question about the AF test. Why not testing both with the same FStop. As far as I understand it focusing with 1.7 will always be harder than with a 2.0

  • @MikeBanom

    @MikeBanom

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Steve! You made the perfect choice going with the 110 IMO! But also if you find that you need a wider FOV… the 80 is still waiting for you 😂 If you are familiar with some of my older videos… I was not very good at being concise, so I just simplified the test to shooting wide open. I think a more fair test would be bumping to f3.2 or around there. But I also figured its the GFX, the AF is not going to be super specular. Just enough to be dangerous!

  • @Bbbbbbbbbb550

    Hello Mike I am considering GFX system, what do you think about landscape photography by using GFX? Which lenses would you recommend for it?

  • @MikeBanom

    @MikeBanom

    Жыл бұрын

    It's def very great for city landscapes!! The GFX is great for anything, unless its fast motion. Although you may even get that to work out depending on your settings. I think the GFX would be perfect for landscapes. As for what lenses… Well it depends on what focal lengths you need. But I'd most likely recommend the GF20-35 and/or the GF45mm for landscape. That should get you covered for most ranges. Both are phenomenal lenses.

    Great video, thanks for the review. However, I would say you missed one important aspect. 80 and 110 have completely different characteristics and when you read up on Fujifilm's intentions when creating the 80, they were going for a much softer look. 110 is supposed to be a clinical lens for pixel peepers, while the 80 is full of character, made somewhat for the religious followers of the XF 35mm f/1.4.

    I have both, but I prefer the 110mm. The optics of the 80mm are nice, but they shouldn't have used the stepper motors in the lens and indeed the aberrations can be an issue wide open. I hope that for the upcoming 55mm f1.7, Fuji returns to using lineair motors. I have the feeling that the early GF lenses (the 23mm, 110mm and 250mm) have been made almost uncompromising in quality, while the later lenses have been designed/built a bit more economic and have higher reliance on software-based corrections. But with that they probably mirror this trend with their competition, and they remain great lenses!

  • @MikeBanom

    Well said! I really hope they use a linear motor for the 55/1.7 as well! I am very much looking forward to that lens. Hopefully it will not be plagued with chromatic aberrations wide open.

    Thank you for the comparison Mike. Today, and for the very first time, I am considering a Fujifilm camera. Fujifilm released the GF55mm /f1. 7 along with the new GFX100 the 2nd. It looks like a very interesting camera. That new 55mm should be quieter, but a better performer compared to it's bigger sibling the 80mm /f1. 7. What is your opinion on this new lens?

  • @MikeBanom

    @MikeBanom

    Thanks for watching! To be totally honest, I'm a big fan of ultra wide and tele. Not really in between. Recently I tried out the XF18mm 1.4, a 27mm equivalent, and I fell in love with that MM. That's been stuck in my brain. I own the 50mm 3.5. I regret the purchase. I've tried the 45mm 2.8 for a few weeks, and it didn't have enough bokeh for me. I'm currently testing the 63mm 2.8. I'm a pretty big fan. But after seeing a video on it by John Branch IV Photography (check it out, he did a GF45mm vs the new GF55), I think I'm REALLY sold on the 55mm 1.7. It looks incredible, with enough background separation to satisfy my needs. I will be getting my hands on it and will have some videos coming out on it in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for my true opinion!

If I don't really care about autofocus, which is slow on the GFX 50S II anyway, would the Voigtlander Apo Skopar 90mm LM be a good choice?
