This song just absolutely nails that bitter-sweet feeling of a relationship gone down in flames. It's like a funeral song for a love that's died. So beautiful and sad. There's no wasted motion here, in a few short words she paints a masterpiece. Absolutely magical.

    A lyrical masterpiece

  • @sumonjamal1653

This song came out in 1980 at the tail end of Abba's career... the group was formed by 2 couples - Bjorn and his wife Agnetha (the blonde) and Benny and his GF Anni-Frid (Frida)... all 4 were accomplished musicians & star in Scandinavia in the 60's before they got together as Abba around 1972. They won the Eurovision TV contest in 1974 and were signed internationally in 1975 and became superstars by 1976. But behind the scenes, the fame and pressure was taking a toll on their relationships - Benny & Frida finally got married in 1978, just as Bjorn and Agnetha separated... Benny & Frida split by 1980. Bjorn wrote 'The winner takes it all' after the split and Agnetha sang it in the studio... By all accounts, their marriage was very passionate - Agnetha was a teen singer when she met Bjorn in the early 70's... they fell in love, got married and had a son. Abba was only famous in Scandinavia, but when their international album became a hit in 1975, they were expected to tour... Agnetha was happy staying home & did not want to leave their son, but Bjorn said, "We gotta do this, we'll regret it if we miss this opportunity. We can get a nanny and do concerts." So this was the pattern by 1977 - record in the studio and tour the world... and that dynamic was straining both relationships. The men wrote the songs, the women sang them in the studio... they had to perform on stage, and Agnetha and Frida were understandably frustrated w/ their husbands... Agnetha and Bjorn had another child attempting to save their marriage, but by 1978, they were not reportedly not speaking at home... so, they made the painful decision to end the marriage and only work together as Abba. In 1979, Abba did their final world tour... all 4 members were getting weary of being on the road, and Agnetha was not willing to sacrifice so much time away from her kids... Abba made 2 more studio albums, but Benny and Frida's split made working together difficult by 1981 and the group slowly faded from view by 1983. There was a lot of sadness in the lyrics on their 1981 album 'The Visitors'.

This is Agnetha's favorite ABBA song. The stories on how this came to be differs although everyone assumed it was about the split up/divorce between Björn and Agnetha. Björn said he wrote the lyrics at their house in the archepelago one night when he was more or less drunk. Agnetha has said she cried the first time she read the lyrics but said it wasn't specific about them. She also said you have to be a little bit of an actor and "play" the role when singing. Then again i've read that they admitted it was indeed about them. Personally i think it's hard to sing these lyrics and make it sound real/honest without going through a tough seperation/divorce.

At the time of this song, the couples were broken up and the songs were about their personal lives. Most of their songs after the breakup of their relationships after 1978/79, it was said was semi-autobiographical. Imagine the difficulties and heartache of singing these lyrics. The two men wrote all the music and lyrics with their manager Stig Andersson. I used to have an Abba site dedicated to them which was included in their music label directory (Polar Music). What impressed me the most about them was that, English wasn't their first language and yet they wrote memorable lyrics. Björn used to speak for them at press conferences. The name Abba comes from the initials of their own names: 'A'gnetha Fältskog 'B'jörn Ulvaeus 'B'enny Andersson 'A'nni-Frid Lyngstad

I love that you guys actually listen to the lyrics, and realize their significance. So many reaction video reviewers completely gloss over the words. The totally crazy thing about this song is that this had really happened to her, and the guy who threw her over was one of the song's composers! They were married, and were either divorcing at the time, or had already gotten divorced. He already had someone new (the winner), and she (the loser) had to put up with that while they were still members of the same band, including traveling together. Mind blowing that she could sing that song. Oh, and the music and vocals were incredible, too!

This song marks an interesting moment in ABBA's history. It was written and recorded fresh after the divorce of its singer, Agnetha Fältskog, from the song's co-writer, Björn Ulvaeus in 1980. In fact, the music video was recorded just 10 days after their divorce was finalized. This of course has led fans to speculate that the lyrics are actually about this event. It also put Agnetha in an emotional position to be tasked with singing a song specifically about a woman suffering from heartbreak (apparently from a divorce) and acknowledging that her ex had found a new wife who was actually written by her ex-husband. . However, Ulvaeus vehemently denied that the song is primarily based on personal experience. And Fältskog stands by her position, saying there were no real winners in their divorce.

@@stevemariman8769 oh okay. I sang it at an art fair with a couple students years ago and forgot most of the song. It's coming back to me now. I just knew I really liked it. I have the music and will get it out and give it a whirl. Thanks for the reminder.

Another song by ABBA that is fantastic is “When All Is Said And Done.” ABBA was my first musical love. I’ve been listening to them since at least 1978. They can still make me cry.

The singer of this one was Agnetha - the other woman is Anni-Frid. The two men are Benny (bearded) and Bjorn (blond). Their initials form the band's name. When the band started, Anni-Frid and Benny were a couple, as were Agnetha and Bjorn. Many of their songs chronicle their love and break-ups. I don't think you've heard "The Name of the Game" yet. "Take a Chance on Me" should be on your list, too. Also, a deeper cut, "The Visitors".

I remember this one very well. My mom used to listen to it and told me how true this song is...after her divorce from my dad became final and she started to pick up the bottle to deal. She lost that battle. Vodka won out. This one will always cut me deep.

Nice reaction ! .. Yes, this is a sad one indeed, but it's an absolute classic .. Perfect song and video .. "SOS", which has been described by John Lennon ( The Beatles ), Pete Townshend ( The Who ), and Ray Davies ( The Kinks ) as among their favourite pop songs would be my next ABBA suggestion .. Cheers, Wayne
