It is interesting how the trope of ‘therapist doesn’t know how to relate to or talk to their kid without patronising or psychoanalysing them’ can ring true for some, even if exaggerated here.

I've known people IRL who follow this trope - it's based in a common reality (partly because of the prevalence of people that need therapy becoming therapists - this is true).

He's NOT a student! As someone who was a middleschooler when this came out and was obsessed with the BTS on Disney Channel- he was indeed a college-aged TA and not a student. The mom says "He's too old for you", he has keys and access to a teacher's lounge and standardized tests (which a student would never have access to), motorcycle license, is at a more appropriate-age TO date the mom (hence it wasn't a weird, pedo feel to the scene, but natural age gap) and he's old enough to get into the HOB show. Now, I want to remind you this is the early 2000s in America- Lindsay Lohan/ Hilary Duff etc dated CMM and plenty twentysomething dudes, no one there age, and they still worked for Disney because it was NORMAL. Even Demi Lovato etc etc. We are JUST getting to a point in American society where we acknowledge these kind of teen-adult age gaps/grooming (Kylie Jenner trend) are wrong, but no one is enforcing it still. Places like tiktok where you can find borderline child p*rn doesn't help. Go to NY, LA or middle America (where child brides and incest are still legal) and you'll still see these kinds of relationships normalized. Sorry to burst tbe bubble. He a grown ass man in this movie, and they never tried to conceal it.

Two things: one, the whole thing about trading lunches with the detention monitor, they were trying to portray that Anna had been to detention so many times that the two of them had developed a sort of friendship. She even stopped and bought a drink for her. And two, I would love to see you guys react to the more recent musical version that came out in 2018.

As someone that LOVES young children and gives them slack / sympathy / understanding / the benefit of the doubt 90% of the time, I'll just say it: the little brother in this flick is an out-of-control brat who needed FAR more attention / discipline / attitude adjustment than Anna ever did. EDIT: Typed this only a few minutes into the video, and now during this edit I'm 16 minutes in, so I'm very curious if you two will share the same opinion. (And yes, the mother is a terrible therapist and parent. At age 31 the door situation pisses me off so much more than when I was a teenager. The poor girl has a new stepfather in the house, and a VERY intrusive younger sibling! How is she supposed to get undressed?! This is so gross!)

52:24 I think he's a student office assistant; at my school you could work for the school's office or library, doing various tasks, to fill a class period(s). It helped students get work experience for resumes, and they tended to pick students that had an interest in teaching or becoming a librarian. It's usually part of the program that also lets students, in like their senior year, with jobs substitute those jobs in place of classes (you need to have or be almost done with required credits, tho. So that's why you see them typically be seniors.). Like my mother in her senior year really only attended one class at school in the morning and then left for her job the rest of the day. It lets you keep the benefits of remaining a student that graduating early might take away (like my older sister who graduated early could not walk with her class). Plus, being a student office assistant or library assistant meant you didn't have to drive or get a lift to your job besides ever how you got to school~^.^ Jake seemed to also be using it as a way to have two jobs while still being a student~~~

Yeah as a senior in high school I was a TA for the orchestra teacher Mr. Reikow I knew him cuz of my choir teacher Mr Daab was next door and we often say hi to him. It was nice to get to know Mr raikow and learn about music in a way. I also was a choir student and sang a lot and was a soprano for four years in my high school career. It was fun cuz I could eat gum. A lot of students said I was lucky. We do the same in choir we can’t have gum either.

Speaking as custodian, there is no first shift custodian so he must be coming in at 3pm when detention is in session. 😅 I think that’s how they keep running into each other. If he does work as a custodian for the school and if he’s working at the coffee shop too, he must be part time then because the usual shift for a custodian at a school is 3 PM to 11 PM there’s no way he is going to 2 Jobs in this time span😂. Only in the movies this can happen and be kind of make sense… 😅

And this was during rhe period before proper smart phone, so she had a handful of different devices and multiple phones, looks like (Palm pilots, digital planners, etc) - Also Jake is a student, just likely an upper classman who 'worked' in the office for extra credits or during off periods. The mystical Asian is in the same boat as mystical stoic "Indian" in movies. I don't know ANY Natives that are stoic/quiet and all mystical. Mostly they tell dirty jokes and giggle like school girls... even grown men. Actually, it's the men who giggle. The women laugh loudly while throwing their heads back. At least in my family. haha Edit: The actress playing Pei-Pei was doing the accent on purpose as she was born and raised in Orange County, California.

I love the actress Rosalind Chao who plays Pei Pei. She has been in so much. 100% american accent normally :) She's not often the main character, but has been acting since the 80s I think. It's funny, watching this now I immediately recognised her from a really small part in What Dreams May Come with Robin Williams. I thought she made such an impact in that 5 minute role. Probably best known at the moment for Mulan. I actually found it weird that Lucille Soong who plays Pei Pei's Mum does have an accent, but it's very different to the one in the show. Imagine asking someone to change their authentic Asian accent to a stereotypical one. Ugh. I know it was 'of the time' but still frustrating.

As much as I love this movie and ‘Mean Girls’, we need a serious discussion on Mark Waters’s depiction of Asian cultures. It’s also Disney as well which does not have a good track record with depicting most cultures.

Piercing guns are not only bad because of their bluntness. They cannot be fully sterilised and/or many of the places that use them don't actually have the facilties to do it properly. Many of the staff are basically kids that don't even get first aid trained in case the person reacts badly. I got mine pierced with a gun before I knew any better and it kinda got stuck on one of my ears so it pulled. Better to have it done with a sharp, new needle in an actual peircing and tattoo shop.

All my ear piercings were done with a gun at an actual piercing place. And when I got my first piercing, it was marketed as a safer option. Later on, it was just a normal thing. Knowing now that it's the opposite of a safer option, I'd be happy going with a needle as all my relatives did before me 😁 - Maria

Even better to go to a dedicated piercing studio rather than a combined tattoo & piercing place. Many of those are only experts in tattooing, with piercing as a side thought. Or so I've heard.

Freaky Friday is awesome. Such a great movie. The first time I went to see it was at an advanced screening which was cool but about 1/2 way through the power went out at the theater and that was upsetting. Glad I went back to see it soon after to see how it ends. Classic. I hope they do make a second movie. There has been talk of it and Jamie and Lindsay are both down for it. Let’s hope they make it and make it awesome and not a bust.

One of my fav scenes from the movie is the audition. Like as a little girl I always thought Jamie Lee Curtis was so cool for this scene. I don't know much about instruments now, especially when I was a kid, so for a good portion of my life I thought she was actually playing the guitar.

When I watch this movie as an adult it stands out more how much Tess doesn't listen. In her interactions with Anna she just assumes whatever happened Anna was at fault and reacts. She never talks to Anna's teacher, she just assumes she's lying about him having it in for her. In my experience, those sorts of things can go either way, but it would be wise to check just in case if your kid says their teacher is singling them out. She doesn't ask why she did that to Harry, when the answer is that he lacks respect for Anna's property and Tess should do something about that. She doesn't even entertain the idea that personalities can radically shift between elementary school and high school and maybe Stacy isn't the sweet little girl she remembers. Anna has an attitude, but her mom has this idea of her in her head and it's painfully obvious she doesn't really see her.

Now, I want to remind you this is the early 2000s in America- Lindsay Lohan/ Hilary Duff etc dated CMM and plenty twentysomething dudes, no one their age, and they still worked for Disney because it was NORMAL.
