I think part of why Carmen was written that way with being apologetic was to go away from the “angry latina” stereotype that was very common at the time. She does get very angry at certain times for very valid reasons but it isn’t part of her personality.

what makes me laugh is that alexis bledel (lena’s actress) is also latina alongside america ferrera but because she’s white passing she always plays a character with a different heritage than her own. i remember finding out that her family is from mexico and spanish is her first language and it blew my mind

Actually she is part ARGENTINIAN and part AMERICAN. Her dad from Argentina and her mom is from USA (but raised in Arizona and Mexico). She is not white passing, she is white. (Anywhere in South America you can find white people, and by that I don’t mean white passing, but people whose ancestry is predominantly or 100% white).

Boik difference #3: Kostas was a close family friend that they kept pushing on her, she went swimming in a lake, he got caught watching her, she flipped out, and they shunned him for it. It only got resolved because she realized the lake was actually a spot HE frequented, and SHE was the one intruding.

In the extras on the DVD of this film, the actresses reveal that they actually wore the same pants, something they thought would not be possible because they are not the same height or size. So it was clearly magic pants.

When I first watched this movie, I related with Carmen when it came to her dad; my parents had also divorced when I was young and my dad hadn't been all that present once he met my ex-stepmom. And I felt all the anger and betrayal that Carmen felt but also the guilt for being angry at him because he was my dad. The scene where she calls him up to tell him how she feels STILL makes me cry, all these years later because of the catharsis it is. America Ferrera really knocked it out of the park.

Yeah, the Carmen storyline is why I could never watch this as a kid. Way too personal. I was in the EXACT situation later in life, but I went through with it. I was a bridesmaid. I had a full dissociative episode during the wedding. I had a panic attack afterward while crossing the street and almost got hit by a tram. The next day I ran away to another country. After a couple days away, calming down, I came back and tried to talk to my dad. He still doesn’t quite understand how it felt. How he made me feel. Years later now, I’ve made peace with it. I no longer feel guilt for being mad at him. I don’t really need him anymore, though it still hurts to think about.

I loved this movie and the books they’re based on so much that they got me through 7th grade. The summer I was 12 I watched this movie practically everyday, it's an ode to female friendship and I love that the actresses have remained good friends. All that being said, I love so many things about this story but there are fun reminders that it was written in the 2000s. I'm always wishing we could talk about people who die by suicide in a kinder way, I'm glad they didn't call Bridget's mom selfish (I've seen that in media a lot unfortunately) but I don't love the implication that she was weak. It's spelled out a little more in later books that Bridget's mom was bipolar and what that was like for Bridget growing up. And it doesn't help that her father is so emotionally limited. Basically, she needs therapy and it shows.

Rewatching this movie again, I think Lydia honestly did not like Carmen. Lydia was planning out the entire wedding and she never thought of asking Carmen's dad to invite Carmen? When Carmen had plans to play tennis with her dad, Lydia happened to ask Carmen's dad to go see Paul, and to rub salt in the wound, Lydia announces that the venue had to cancel due to some ludicrous excuse just to steal Carmen's dad away for the day to figure things out. More than anything, she probably cancelled the booking and always had plans to have the wedding at their house. The biggest evidence is when Carmen went to her dress fitting and stormed off, Lydia probably lied to Carmen's dad about Carmen just going out on the town so her dad wouldn't worry. Carmen's dad obviously is just as at fault, but Lydia is pulled the strings with how microaggressive she acted towards Carmen. Lydia tried to charm Carmen, but as soon as Carmen didn't get with the program, Lydia decided to fuck with Carmen to show her she's not welcome and that her dad has a new family. In essence, fuck Lydia.

You made half that stuff up though. I was surprised when my ex husband got remarried that he didn't even bother to tell us. He also got married at his home in the backyard and didn't invite his own daughter to his wedding. So, let's not automatically demonize the woman when the dad is known for running and not taking any action on his own. He should also be putting Lydia in her place for disrespecting his kid. The fact he didn't tell her about Lydia at all, the new family, or the fact they had a Hispanic housekeeper is wild.

Well that was a trip down nostalgia lane. I remember reading the books and watching these movies, and all I wanted was a group of friends like that. I guess I still do. And to go to Greece. I think this was the first movie I watched where I saw Greece as it is now and not just pictures of the Parthenon in my history books. I also remember being very angry about how Carmen was being treated too. I related to her the most because she was a writer and her parents were divorced like mine except it was my mom who left. (Added layer, while I love my father who raised me, he is not my biological father. So I could also relate to the feeling of having a "father" who was not very interested in being part of my life).

We did our own version of the pants that summer as the 'sisterhood of the traveling charm bracelet' with a charm representing each of us. I find this movie pretty relatable for various reasons and I love the characters. I always found Bailey's story heartbreaking. My sister was 16 when she diagnosed with cancer (she's okay now) and we watched this movie together soon after. Definitely balling our eyes out at that but this is one of the few movies that shows cancer that my sister likes. Usually movies just have ill characters defined only by the cancer and they always die. But here at least Bailey was complex and she had her own little arc.

caught half of the reaction earlier during the livestream and came back to finish the rest! seriously love this series, i remember reading some of the books as a kid and the movies hold a special place in my memories. loved y'all's reaction and break down of the characters. i feel like since i saw the movies so young it's easy to cement my feelings towards certain actions they take to how i felt about them at the time i first saw the movie, and your thoughts help me to look at certain things from a different perspective and open my view of the how and why (i hope that makes sense?! 😂).

This movie is so good!!! Thanks for reacting to it. I think the movies are based on books 🤔 Hence why many of the characters are complex and written well. I think many of us can relate to the girls in some way.

I watched this a handful of times when I was younger, but I remember finding the Bridget character and storyline kinda annoying even though I understand her story so I eventually lost interest. I did watch the sequel, but I don't remember it as well as the first film. No spoilers. I liked the second film, but not as much as the first one. I remember it feeling rushed and having a couple dumb and/or problematic moments. I do hope this video is popular enough for you to watch the sequel because I think you will also find it enjoyable.

I've been watching your reaction for some time now, and I have to comment on this one! 😅 When I was a kid/teen, I had two...obsessions/fangirling stuff. Harry Potter AND The Brotherhood of Traveling Pants (Or “Quatre filles & un jean” in French 🙃)! I have read the books so many times. I was 11 when the first book came out, and 22 for the last one (which broke me into pieces), so it grew on me. I'm French and the film was really difficult to find here (I found it in a way that wasn't... legal, probably the first infraction of my life 🤣); and even though the casting is amazing and some parts of the story are really brilliantly adapted, I was so angry with the Lena's story ! Totally different from the one in the book. In the book, Kostas's family and Lena's family are very close and push them towards each other... I don't know why they decided to do something like Romeo and Juliet, but... Okay 🤔 I think that's the reason why the story feels a little flat towards the end: it wasn't supposed to happen this way. I hope you watch the 2nd movie soon, I don't really remember it except it's not an adaptation of ONE book, but they chose a story life of different book for each character and mixed it up 😅 Anyway, loved your commentary (as always), and... now, I want to re-read the book (and hope it's not too bad with an adult eye, but the Bridget&Eric's story will be a struggle, not gonna lie.)

Oh thank goodness someone mentioned the weirdly altered Lena storyline. I think the reason it was probably changed to a more Romeo and Juliet Ark was that no one thought non-book fans would be able to understand her reticence and fear being the only thing that kept her away from this boy. Which is a bit of a slap in the face to a certain subset of introvert, interestingly the Edition that is made to Carmen's seemingly OneNote storyline in the sequel doesn't bother me nearly as much. That's possibly because they are melting three books into one movie with that one, so in that instance it was more of we're taking a main storyline from book 4 with a dash of book 3, where is this was just trying to have a book one ending when they had made so much of the build-up be the movies additional drama

What I took away from the whole, "Maria can wash your sheets thing", is that they have a Latin American maid doing their chores. The way Carmen and Maria exchange looks is heavy because it shows the obvious classism that her dad's new family upholds. I think she offers to do her own sheets and "people wash their sheets all the time", was a backhanded statement, expressing passive distaste. Later, on the phone to her dad, she says the line, "are you ashamed of me? Are you embarrassed?" I think that's why it was a weird transaction between Carmen and Lydia. Carmen is realising she's seen as lesser. :(

It be prefect the characters are the right age it bring closer to the series of movies. I’d just like to see it. All the actors haven’t gotten along all these years but now that they are I’d like to see a final movie. Ps I really enjoyed watching this brought back a lot of memories.

I understand Carmen being hurt and upset with the situation and rightfully so but her speaking Spanish and acting rude to her dad's fiance and kids when they didn't really do anything to her purposefully was not right either. You lash out at the person you are truly made at, your dad. For someone who was a writer, she had a hard time communicating her actual feelings. I do want to reiterate she has EVERY right to be upset, especially how she found out about them, but it's the way she handled it that didnt't help either lol.

  • @icelily1761

    @icelily1761

You're right in that Carmen shouldn't have lashed out at Lydia and her kids, but you have to remember that Carmen is only 15-16. Nobody makes the best decisions at that age, especially with something so emotionally charged as this situation, and writer or not its hard to communicate your feelings when youre a teenager. It was probably easier for Carmen to take it out on them because to her, they were strangers that were thrust into her life suddenly, whereas she loved her dad and it's hard for her to face that he was the one at fault for throwing this on her and expecting her to react well.
