This is How Your Ego Is Holding You Back

We all have an ego - and if left unchecked, it will get in our way and hold us back. Many people have asked me what the ego is, how to know if your ego is running your life even if you're not full of yourself. In this talk I teach about what the ego is, how it shows up and how to start doing ego work.

It makes sense, getting outside of your comfort zone (like a business) is so difficult and like Julia says-your ego is there for better or for worse as the basis off what you were taught. By doing what you do you are trying to move from that and debate your ego maybe! Good luck you are doing great I'm sure 😉

I have to take this every day for life as I suffer from 3 mental conditions, and my brain will never ever fully understand the advice as when it hits midnight, my brain automatically hits the reset button and the advice goes out the window. So, it's a daily commitment to getting help by watching these daily and feeling better about myself.

I am going thru an experience of being regularly triggered for hours a day due to the noisy neighbour above me. Its most unpleasant. It's gotten so bad I have started sleeping at off hours to avoid it. Angry aggressive thoughts are certainly challenging me moment to moment most of the time at home.

Wonderful video like always, Julia. This has taught me extensively about the ego, and how it could be used negatively against oneself. There is a song that taught me as well about how crucial an ego could be, and how it draws us back from being caring and loving of the people around us which could lead us to despair. It’s called Reflection, by Tool. It gave an example of how the Moon, as bright as it is, it reflects millions of lights from the Sun. Therefore, without the light of the Sun, the moon is a lifeless satalite. I think it’s a metaphor that we, as people, complete each other, by caring for one another and not letting the ego get in the way.

A lot of people tell me my ego is a big problem because of how feisty end confrontative I am. But they never acknowledge how they constantly make fun of the colour of my skin, my nationality, my physical features, but most of all, how all that combine is the excuse to treat me differently and frame the situations to prove their "ego" point.

  • @francesbeth2077

You are so right. I don't know how to not be triggered and become explosive. Mainly with close family members and my significant male mate. I want it to end so I can enjoy my life with someone. And not just for happy times..but even the sad times or day to day life.experiencea. I hate being alone and I have alot of love to give but I never feel secure with the person. And I never believed my family was proud of me. I was always carrying shame and worry, even as a young child. I tried to mimick what I thought was appealing behavior to a man, and yet never put myself in the equation. I don't know what a healthy relationship is. I always want to be included with my family's decisions so that I know how I can help. Just like church, the leaders always recruited you for specific tasks or jobs in the church family, so that you take a part in ownership of your church. I never thought I had an ego. I became what the other person needed. For me it is shame that has plaqued me even as a child. Not with teachers, colleagues, coworkers professor s or friends, though. Strange isn't it? For me, I wanted my family to love me and not be ashamed of me. And to share my mate with my family for life events. I know not everyone will like me but sure wish my family did! Your video is enlightening and enriching.❤️

Wow!! So need this! So stuck and headed further down the rabbit hole. I keep getting deeper & deeper into my own head & it’s not productive or beneficial. How to stop? Was not always like this. Can I divorce my ego? Leave it on the side of the road? It’s always outsmarting me and winning? It’s so negative and I’m hoping to find some positivity in me that can shine & share. Why is the ego so negative? I know they say the forming years only go thru age 7, but some of us may have been older as our brains may have been spongier longer. Some days, i still feel spongy & gullible thanks to my negative ego. I want to recognize it sooner, not hours or days later. I want to retrain it, re brainwash & reprogram it. Such a struggle. Somewhere in here I hope to find the good person i used to be or the one i thought i was or wish and hope to be. Ego holds us back truly in more ways than discussed. Even at work!! Can you discuss ego & the low grade narcissist as well as ego & the codependent; touching on both differences & similarities? Why & how to change both. I just can not feel free because I have been in survival mode for so long. Do you have any videos on getting out of survival mode and just being happy existing?

Our ego defense maybe to stay silent and take the verbal abuse of others who are acting in ego, or to say Bye Felicia and cut them out so the negative energy is no longer attacking us. So after acknowledging our own ego thought, you're saying we should step back, balance our mind, and come back to see where they may be coming from. Not to think of it as an attack but try to see their different lens that may not see your perspective.. And then respond without fear. Squashing it, rather than reacting defensively. (if everyone did this, we'd have a more understanding world. This is exactly what we needed to hear today -Thank you

This video hit hard for me. I buried my mom, dad, grandad, brother and uncle from the age of 9-13. My ego keeps reminding me of what I said about myself and my family and friends said about me. Last month was the 32nd anniversary of my mom dying and my ego came at me screaming. I done what i did when I was 9, binge eat. Got 3 footlong subs, half gallon of ice cream, and a 3 liter coke and ate it all in one sitting. My ego isn't holding me back, its killing me.

I have my own version of human spirit system and I think that ego is actually a set of different behaviours. Thing is that ego as it is is a part of any behaviour if you'll be honest with yourself. And so by fighting this set of behaviours you are actually starting a war with absolutely fine ideals that happens to be hated if being viewed from special angle (like fake news making anything looks scary and bad). So I encourage you to trust yourself and look at any self behaviour from a point of good one. With adequate filter, definitely. I am ok with that I like to gain sympathy from acting generous or helpful. Addiction is happening when you are hiding and shaming something that might be great for you, and so just can't fill enough. They way you make yourself a better person is by pray your best ego parts, and discovering your saturation point by feeding different good ego aspects (like love for attention and fame). It is about the way you are getting your jam. If you honest, loving, compassionate - you are fine to fulfill all your "ego" needs.

Thank you Julia for the video about the EGO. This is one of the best videos that I have seen this week to help create a better version of myself at an emotional level. My ego has affected me since I was a child. How we can control the ego and we keep in mind to think how special we are, this can help us grow and more emotionally secured. I watched the video for 6 minutes and then I had to go to work for a meeting. I had an Emotional trigger at my work and I identified it after the meeting. I will watch this video again because it is so beneficial. Emotional trigger: The "Inability" to speak naturally with others in any language. What does it tell me: It tries to tell me that I am too nervous to do it. I suck and I cannot do it and I am not good enough, Observation of the ego: How do I feel: I feel sad, frustrated and overwhelmed. What is another way to see the go: It gives me energy to work harder and improve each day with public speaking, my youtube channel that I am organizing and my self-esteem to communicate with confidence in the languages that I speak. Thank you Julia!

I have a memory of being around 5 years old.. I LOVED listening to music on the radio and I started trying to sing songs I was learning. I was SO AFRAID that someone would hear me, not like my singing and make me feel embarrassed. So I decided to sing under the covers or under my pillow every night when I thought everyone else was asleep. I liked how I sounded and I was proud of myself.. for remembering the lyrics and singing to the beat I DREAMED of being a singer someday.. one night I got caught by my Father.. he was angry that I wasn't asleep yet.. he said "I heard you singing under there.." I felt SO ASHAMED.. He didn't say I sounded good. He told me "no singing at bedtime" and walked out. I assumed I had just embarrassed myself and my dream of being a singer was squashed from the fear of sounding terrible. If only my Dad had said "would you like to be a singer someday?" Or somehow acknowledged my inclination towards music at a young age.. since it was something he exposed me to himself! I always wondered what he thought of my singing or how long he even listened. If only I could've pleased him with my singing.. I guess I had a fragile ego from the start?

you gave claity about this complex thing and what to do also,I find it very difficult to separarte myself from Ego because it so deeply attached to my existence ie myself.when i am in egoic state i could not figure it out because at that time Ego becomes the i so who am i ? which i is ego and which i is me ? you teach very simply the most complicated topics thanks .

Hey Julia! I've been loving your videos, they're truly so helpful. Could you perhaps go deeper into mindful exercises (20min+) and include more of those videos in your channel? I loved your 10 minute guided mindfulness exercise and I'd love to take it to the next level! Thanks as always :D

Have you heard of A Course in Miracles. The workbook has 365 lessons that undo the ego mind. The goal is to achieve a God centered reality and to use the Holy Spirit as our guide. To return to God’s love, with inner peace and freedom from attachments to the egos illusions.

Hi I’m finding your videos so very helpful - thank you 🙏 I’m feeling a shift after many years of trying so hard! Do you refer to the inner child? And is this the same as the ego in your view? Thank you in advance ❤️
