This is How to Do Things You Don't Want to Do

No matter what you want to accomplish in life, it's going to involve discomfort:
A great career or business requires hard work.
A healthy body needs exercise and foods you don't necessarily like.
Meaningful relationships need vulnerability and compromises.
In fact, anything worthwhile often requires that you do what you don't want to do.
And that can be hard.
But it doesn't have to be.

    I think it's important to understand that the mind's thoughts are themselves influenced by a variety of things. You will think different thoughts depending on your mood, how full your stomach is, weather or not you have alcohol in your system, and even the weather itself can influence what you think about. It's also relevant to consider the “color” of your thoughts, that is, the emotional background of the thought itself. An angry thought that is focused on being productive is slightly different to a happy thought that is focused on being productive. As you say, the mind is a suggestion box that is influenced by thousands of internal and external factors. The ability to take the suggestion box with a grain of salt and push on regardless can take you far in life. Good video, good stuff!

The message is confusing because he says you need to do what you don't want to do to acclomplish your goals and desires...things you do want! So what i did was forse myself towards goals i did not value....pure waste of energy. I am now searching for better ways to give me direction, i know i can do the work, i excersice 3-4 times a week because i value it as important and it gives me energy, i feel good afterwards! Voluntary discomfort is a dangerous thing. I have a problem with procrastination, and doing voluntary discomfort was a good method at first, but I figured over time I was still procrastinating, but effectively making myself suffer in order to feel better about it. Make sure the discomfort is effectively a good thing. Fasting, as suggested in this video, is a really slippery slope. It may lead to you thinking that it's ok to not do X because in exchange you won't eat.

  • @1BeGe

    @@devourerofnuggets Ummmm, no. 1) Being cold does not strengthen immune response to rhinovirus (a cold). Studies indicate it does in fact lower it. As far as we can tell it lowers immune response in general too, but we've specifically tested it with rhinovirus and seen it lower immune response to it. 2) Sinuses are at a lower temperature than the rest of the body in general, which is why rhinovirus typically replicates there, because it doesn't replicate as well in higher temperatures, and being cold and letting your nose/sinuses get even colder absolutely allows it to replicated out of control (i.e. get you sick). 3) One of the body's response to being cold is to narrow blood vessels in the upper respiratory tract, which lessens what white blood cells can do to combat a replicating virus in those areas, again, allowing it to replicate out of control (i.e. get you sick). Saying "being cold gives you a cold" may be a severe simplification of what's going on...but it's not really a wrong one.

  • @bobbys1308

    @bobbys1308

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@1BeGe Exposing yourself to the cold has been proven to increase white blood cells significantly, which strengthens your immune system, along with it increasing BAT (brown adipose tissue, brown fat) which causes your body to burn extra calories which can in turn burn off excess fat. An increased metabolic rate stimulates the immune response. It also reduces inflammation, swelling and sore muscles. Another 2014 study showed that immersion in cold water causes the body to release adrenaline. This has two effects: It makes your immune system produce more anti-inflammatory substances. It also lowers your inflammation response to infections. Both of these effects can help your body resist illness.

  • @1BeGe

    @1BeGe

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@bobbys1308 Your body literally has those responses BECAUSE of how susceptible it is to illness when cold. That's it doing what it can to fortify against it. Instead of studies about whether one or two of the plethora of variables involved in immune response go up or down and then making sweeping large scale conclusions such as "these few things increased, it must mean it's stronger" try looking up actual end result studies: i.e. when people were exposed to X in various temperature conditions how often did the contract the illness? They nearly universally show that you catch stuff easier when you're cold. And this is literally EXTRA true for rhinovirus specifically because it is SPECIALLY adapted to replicate better when you get cold. That's LITERALLY its specific evolved characteristic. It lays mostly dormant until your sinuses are cooled and dried by cold weather, then replicates in those conditions. Anyone that thinks that being cold will make you more resistant to rhinovirus literally does not know anything about rhinovirus.

    I feel like physical discomfort can be way different than mental discomfort, at least for me. I've learnt to love physical discomfort but for some reason mental discomfort triggers my fight or flight and I always fly.

    I definitely agree with this kind of thinking. In a distracted society like today, it is hard to stay focused and do things one does not want to do. The only thing about resistance training is your focus (which I intend to continue to do), is to not mistake resistance training for pushing yourself too far. However, if one is cognisant of when they actually are tired or not and when you simply don't FEEL like doing it, then resistance training is harmless and very beneficial to your health and wellbeing. I want to write up a challenge / plan to regain my focus. I already installed the app One-Sec. Other things I wish to do are to are: -try and read for longer periods of time without getting distracted or my mind wandering -more meditation (5 minutes a day even if it is just focusing on my breath with no guided anything) -journaling as often as I can to reroute my day and catch myself when I'm in a procrastination cycle -use social media healthily (know why and what you intend to do with the app BEFORE you open it) Any other suggestions?

    Wow! What an amazing video. Your direct, in-your-face approach did sting my ass but it was the best 4 minutes 12 seconds of my life lately. Thank you 'The Art of Improvement' for creating such an incredible video.

    Guys I joined a basketball in my sophomore year and I’ve only ever played softball when I was like 9, I got to leave for conditioning in like 15mins. It’s so uncomfortable and hard so thank you for this!😭

    Thank you so much. I've listened to motivational videos before and even made notes but this one is probably the best. It is short but says everything that needs to be said. I took notes on almost everything that you said and plan to rewrite it and post it where I will see it. I am older and if I don't get it together, I will leave the planet as a failure. I will let you know how I do on this if you care to know. Please get back to me.

    Planet X, thank you for your comment. I am older too, and I can definitely relate. I do not have much time left to achieve the success I have a burning desire for. I have held myself back my entire life by avoiding what I fear, doing what felt comfortable, and allowing distractions to diminish my focus. I do not want to leave this life knowing that I lived below my potential.

    Planetx and robichard: both your words are inspiring for a 21 year old, I look forward to reach the potential I have, we have finite time in this world and you don't want to waste it. Maybe I'll save up money to freeze myself into the future to the time we have reached inmortality
